The Kingdom of Zork! Welcome to the Kingdom of Zork! You are bored. There's nothing on TV ex- cept some stupid reruns. You wander into your local book store and pick up an inter- esting-looking book entitled Zork: The Mali- festro Quest. As usual, you turn to the first page and begin reading. The book is set in the magical land of Zork, where the evil and greedy wizard Malifestro has imprisoned Syovar, the rightful ruler of the kingdom, and only YOU can save the day! There are elves, trolls, magic potions, a flying carpet, the Snow Monster of Snurth, and a giant empire to explore. It looks like this book is good! Do you choose to save the kingdom? If so, purchase the book and turn to page 7. Or do you choose to go home and watch re- runs? Turn to the next page. In front of the TV, your eyelids slowly close. A strange sound fills the room. Suddenly your eyes open; you realize that you have been snoring. You can't get that Zork book out of your mind, but the bookstore is already closed. Think again! A hissing, writhing mass of snakes covers the entire floor. Syovar hangs from a rope tied securely to his hands. He is suspended only a foot or so above the ground. Sweat pours down his face . as snakes hiss and snap at his feet. Syovar gives a moan of pain. His lips do not move but, somehow, he seems to be speaking: "Come. Take the ancient underground route. Seek the black crystal sphere. Hurry... " His words fade away, and are replaced by a distant pounding. It seems to come from everywhere. The pounding grows louder and louder. ... Bill awakens from his nightmare with a start. He sits up in bed, shaking, and tries to get his bearings. He remembers that it is Sat- urday, the first day of summer vacation. Sun- light is streaming into his bedroom. He realizes that the pounding from his dream is still going on. It comes from the direction of his window. He looks over and sees June out- side, banging on the window. Turn to page 8. 8 Bill opens the window and June climbs in. "But I haven't had breakfast yet. ." But as Bill and June and their friends made plans for the vacation ahead, thoughts of ad- venturing faded like the snows of winter. Now comes this jolting reminder of that other world. Bill opens the top drawer of his chest and removes the Ring of Zork, their gift from Syovar. The ring is pulsing with flashes of vivid light. "Bill, this can't be a coincidence! The dreams, the ring—we're being summoned for some important reason. Let's go!" Go to page 9. 10 11 The walls and floors are of polished stone. The bed is large and covered by a woven canopy. A massive oak door, lying open, leads out to a dim corridor. A dead silence pervades the room. Their clothes have changed also. They are now dressed in adventurers' garb, featuring leather belts, hooded cloaks, and sturdy leather boots. They are now Bivotar and Jur- anda. "Well, Juranda, should we look around?" He feels the excitement of adventuring re- turning. "Sure, Bivotar, let's have a look around." Juranda says gaily. The danger to Syovar is momentarily forgotten. They soon discover that they are in a tremendous castle. Long, stone corridors con- nect bedrooms, banquet halls, guard rooms, and an elegant throne room. The castle seems to be deserted and somewhat neglected. Eventually, they come to the front gate of the castle. The drawbridge is down, leading out to a wide, grassy plain. Mountains are visible in the distance. The day is gray and overcast. Turn to page 12. 12 13 Across from the gate, a forbidding doorway "Quick—after them!" says Juranda. leads into a darkened room. "At least, I don't think so. Who's Malifestro?" "Malifestro .. .," begins Max. "... powerful wizard....," Fred continues. "... eats elves like us for breakfast," Max concludes. Turn to page 14. 14 "That reminds me," says Bivotar. "I still haven't had breakfast." The elves try to hide behind each other. "Don't eat us!" they whimper. "I'm not going to eat you," Bivotar says gently. "Why are you two so frightened?" "Evil times in Castle of Zork," says Max. "Malifestro more powerful than anyone im- agine," explains Fred. "He lives in distant land where magic stronger than here in Land of Frobozz," adds Max. "And now Syovar prisoner, no one can stop him," says Fred. "Syovar! A prisoner?" says Juranda. "Where? Tell us more!" Bit by bit, the elves reveal that the evil wizard Malifestro used a powerful spell to capture Syovar. Malifestro is holding Syovar for ransom in his own castle, far beyond the Flathead Mountains. The ransom includes a wealth of gold and jewels, half the land of the Kingdom of Zork, and ten thousand men to be enslaved by Malifestro. "Wizard kill you," Max points out. "Or eat you, like elves." "Or turned into snails." "Or boiled in oil." "Or banished to snake pits." [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Text-based games are a natural challenge domain for deep reinforcement learning algorithms. Their state and action spaces are combinatorially large, their reward function is sparse, and they are partially observable: the agent is in- formed of the consequences of its actions through textual feedback. In this paper we emphasize this latter point and consider the design of a deep reinforcement learning agent that can play from feedback alone. Our design recognizes and takes advantage of the structural characteristics of text- based games. We first propose a contextualisation mecha- nism, based on accumulated reward, which simplifies the learning problem and mitigates partial observability. We then study different methods that rely on the notion that most actions are ineffectual in any given situation, following Za- havy et al.’s idea of an admissible action.     Jay Simon 3/18/2002 STS 145 Case Study Zork: A Study of Early Interactive Fiction I: Introduction If you are a fan of interactive fiction, or have any interest in text-based games from the early 1980’s, then you are no doubt familiar with a fascinating series known as Zork. For the other 97 percent of the population, the original Zork games are text-based adventures in which the player is given a setting, and types in a command in standard English. The command is processed, and sometimes changes the state of the game. This results in a new situation that is then communicated to the user, restarting the cycle. This type of adventure game is classified as belonging to a genre called “interactive fiction”. Zork is exceptional in that the early Zork games are by far the most popular early interactive fiction titles ever released. It is interesting to examine why these games sold so well, while most other interactive fiction games could not sell for free in the 1980’s. As we will see, this is a result of many different technological and stylistic aspects of Zork that separate it from the rest of the genre. Zork is a unique artifact in gaming history. II: MIT and Infocom – The Prehistory of Zork Zork was not a modern project developed under a strict timeline by a designated team of programmers, but credit is given to two MIT phenoms named Marc Blank and Dave Lebling. Its history can be traced all the way back to the invention of a medium-sized machine called the PDP-10, in the 1960’s.
