Thornton Gary West, who co-owns the disqualified GI Kentucky Derby winner Maximum Security (New Year=s Day), said Monday an appeal is in the pipeline after a federal judge on Friday dismissed his civil rights lawsuit that sought to overturn the foul ruling that cost his colt the first leg of the 2019 Triple Crown. But recently I've felt my blood pressure rise and face begin to heat up when reading arguments about this year's Horse of the Year. We can all agree that Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute), Mitole (Eskendereya), and Bricks and Mortar (Giant=s Causeway) all had objectively wonderful years, but to me it's clear that Bricks and Mortar is the Horse of the Year. That said, it's not uncommon for me to yell at my computer screen and scoff whenever I see someone argue against my boy >Bricks=. But I know I'm biased--that's my baby you're talking about. I was an intern at Stone Farm when Bricks and Mortar and I met on a foggy Kentucky morning in March, 2014. We met politely with a firm handshake as I pulled him out of his dam. A remarkably unremarkable delivery, Beyond the Waves >14 entered the world quietly and quickly. AGood morning, buddy@ are the first words he ever heard. Even if his foaling was unremarkable, he quickly set himself apart from his peers early on. I was astounded by his maturity and eagerness to please. SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 2019 BRICKS AND MORTAR HANDLE FIGURES SHOW REVAMPED SARATOGA DATES WORKING MEETS TITLE-DEFENDING News Analysis, by Bill Finley When NYRA reached the halfway point of its 2019 Saratoga STABLEMATE IN MILLION meet Wednesday, all-sources handle was $320,684,714, or 2.3% higher than the number posted after the 20th racing day a year earlier. While that may seem like only a minor increase in handle, the number is more impressive than it may look on paper. For several reasons, comparing Saratoga 2019 vs. 2018 is like comparing pineapples to watermelons, but there is a key factor involved in those numbers that tells you just how well NYRA has broken out of the gate. Due to the heat, NYRA lost an entire Saturday card July 20. Saturday cards at Saratoga in July normally handle in the $23-million range. FRIDAY, 22 JUNE 2018 IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL STRADIVARIUS ANSWERS By Chris McGrath GOLD CUP CALL The longest day, and in more ways than one. On the two previous mornings, the only racegoers on the train had been murmuring to each other over the rustle of their newspapers, trying not to feel too conspicuous in their finery among the stolid and resentful commuters. Yesterday, the same service was crammed with the noisy, bibulous vanguard of Ladies' Day, launching a fusillade of corks in ominous syncopation with the safety-catch clicking of cans. Some, plainly, were setting impossible early fractions. By the time the shadows of the solstice evening began to lengthen, they had been given an edifying lesson in how to manage a far more arduous test of stamina.
