CJ1132 - Kenya Nyeri Karatina Double Washed Crown Jewel July 24th, 2017 | See This Coffee Online Here Intro by Chris Kornman Nyeri coffees are almost always at the top of a cupper’s list of favorites, and this exceptional coffee from the Karatina Factory (aka Washing Station) is unquestionably the cream of the crop. Described as having a prototypical Kenya profile, an argument could be made that this coffee is the standard against which to measure the rest. The flavor profile reads like a summer music festival lineup of classic Kenya flavor notes, opening with juicy blackberry, savory sundried tomato, and blackcurrant jam, and headlined by zesty-sweet ruby red grapefruit. Karatina belongs to a small but exceptional Cooperative Society called Barichu that includes Gaturiri and Gatomboya factories and together represent fewer than 1000 smallholder farming families. The farms and factories are located within Central Kenya’s Nyeri county, bordered on the west by the Aberdares range, and on the northeast by Mount Kenya. In all of Africa, only Kilimanjaro tops the maximum elevation of Mount Kenya. Smallholders like those that contribute to Karatina tend to measure their plots by number of trees rather than acreage, averaging around 250 coffee plants per plot. Many are inter-cropping to improve the biodiversity of the region and the security of their harvest, planting banana, grevillea, and macadamia in addition to coffee. Kenya’s auction system elevates the value of exceptional coffees, and keeps the country’s coffee margins high, stable, and independent of the volatile C Market. Like most Kenyan growing regions, coffee in Nyeri benefits from its equatorial location and two distinct annual rainy seasons, resulting in a main crop in the winter and a “fly” crop harvested in the summer. -

National Police Service “Service with Dignity” Strategic Plan 2013/14 -2017/18 National Police Service 2013 -2018 Strategic Plan iii Foreword It is with great pleasure that I release this strategic plan which will deliver the continued police reforms and transformation of the National Police Service. The plan articulates strategies that are being deployed over five (5) years towards a holistic transformation of the Service. In particular, it will strengthen the establishment of various institutions like Internal Affairs Unit, County Policing Authorities and Community Policing Committees as service delivery organs. Other areas of the strategy include provision of leadership and command to realise harmonisation of component Services, specifically Kenya Police and Administration Police. This will be achieved through collaboration and development of common programmes like training, use of standardised Service Standing Orders, and other administrative systems and approaches. To ensure a sustained reform agenda articulated in reform legislation, the reforms proposed in legislation and by various stakeholders will be implemented over the next five years. A Reforms Directorate will be established, which will link with reform champions across the Services. The reforms will focus primarily on the policing style, service delivery, modernisation of facilities and use of technology as a thrift to modern policing. This plan proposes establishment of strategic linkages with diverse stakeholders locally and internationally. NPS will target to benchmark and learn from the best police services in the world. This will ensure that NPS builds momentum towords achieving her grand vision of becoming; “A World-class Police Service.” The plan envisages strengthening of the institutional capacity that encompasses extensive training of officers, creating a condusive working environment and implementing a performance and quality management system. -

Outline the effects of the uprising. LESSON OVERVIEW: Mau-Mau was an underground political uprising organized by the people of Kenya against British colonial rule from 1951-60. The Mau-Mau rebellion embodied the African efforts to fight for their rights after realizing that they were oppressed in their own country. It was also an indication that Africans were politically aware and determined to shape their destiny. Muthoni Kirima, a member of the Kikyu tribe grew up in the central highlands of Kenya in the 1940’s. As a young girl she worked with her parents as a sharecropper on a British settler’s citrus plantation. The working conditions on the plantation resembled slave labor and at the age of sixteen she escaped into the forest to join the resistance movement known as Mau- Mau. The Mau-Mau movement was fighting for their native lands after the British had taken vast tracts for agriculture under the guise of colonization.
