Coach’s Corner

Bart Lundy Head Men's Basketball Coach Phone: 704-337-2510 Email: [email protected]

Bart Lundy enters his fifth season of his second stint at Queens University of Charlotte in 2017, and 10th year overall, as the winningest coach in Queens basketball history. After lead- ing his team to a 30-4 record in the 2016-17 campaign, Lundy holds a record at Queens of 200-77 (.722 win pct.), and an overall coaching record of 296-164 (.643 win pct.) in 15 sea- sons as a head coach in Division I and Division II.

The 2016-2017 Royals surpassed the 30-win plateau for the first time in program history while taking home the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament championships for the first time in the school’s four-year tenure in the league. Queens also hosted the NCAA Di- vision II Southeast Regional as the No. 1-seed in the region and made it to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003. During the regular season, the Royals reached their highest national ranking in program history, peaking at No. 2 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and No. 3 in the NABC Coaches Poll after starting the season 16-0, the best start in program history. Since returning to the school prior to the 2013-2014 season, Lundy’s teams have increased their win total each year.

Lundy first took over the Queens program at the age of 25 after helping then head coach Dale Layer as an assistant for two years. In his first stint as head coach (1998-2003), Lundy took the Royals to their first regional title and Elite Eight appearance in 2002, and followed the success with a trip to the Final Four in 2003. Three times in the five-year span Lundy’s teams set the school rec- ord for wins in a season.

In his 10 years leading the Royals, Lundy has led Queens to two elite eight appearances, one final four, five NCAA Tournament berths, four conference regular season titles, and two conference tournament titles. Lundy was also named Coach of the Year in 2000-2001, Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2003, and has coached one National Player of the Year, two conference Players of the Year, and nine first-team all-conference selections.

Lundy returned to Queens after a one-year stint at The University of North Texas (2012-13), where he served as an assistant to first-year coach Tony Benford, and helped develop first-round NBA draft pick Tony Mitchell.

Prior to North Texas, Lundy coached at Marquette University in Milwaukee where he assisted head coach Buzz Williams for three years (2009-2012). In that time, Marquette made three consecutive NCAA tournaments appearances and two-straight Sweet 16 appearances with a roster that featured eight future NBA players including All-Star Jimmy Butler of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Jae Crowder of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Marquette hired Lundy from High Point University where he served as head coach for six seasons from 2003-2009, taking over the program at the age of 31 making him the second youngest Division I head coach in the country. In his first year, he was named the 2004 NCAA Division I National Rookie Coach of the Year after guiding his team to a 19-11 record, the largest turnaround in record from the previous year in Division I. During his tenure at High Point, Lundy coached three Big South Players of the Year and led the conference in scoring in three of six seasons. His 96 wins are the most by a coach in High Point’s Division I history. He also established school records for conference wins, road wins and highest RPI ranking.

In addition to success on the court, Lundy has graduated 90 percent of his student-athletes who finished their eligibility, with 100 percent of them on track to graduate going into their final season.

Lundy began his coaching career at Winthrop University where he also graduated with a Master of Arts (1998). He was a player collegiately at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Lenoir-Rhyne University.

Lundy currently lives in Charlotte with his wife Suzanne and his five children, Grace, Ian, Kellen, Alec, and Liam.
