  • Media Statement
MEDIA STATEMENT 28 September 2018 Good luck to Billy the Kid. Our greatest son KAP Leader and Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has wished Innisfail hero, Billy Slater the best of luck in this weekend’s NRL grand final. He’s hoping Slater will get a fairy tale finish to his spectacular rugby league career when the Melbourne Storm take-on the Sydney Roosters this Sunday. Mr Katter said, “Slater is ranked up there beside Johnathan Thurston, Wally Lewis and Cam Smith as the greatest ever players to play rugby league and anyone who watched the semi finals would not hesitate for a moment to say that Slater is easily the most dominant player in the NRL. “A heart as big as a lion’s that resides in people like Billy Slater, the determination of a tiger, the athletic skills and all those rare qualities that make people winners are all on display there with Billy. “He’s not just the best fullback in Australia - he’d have to be up there with being the best fullback that’s ever played the game. “Shane Knuth and I had our photograph taken last year at the ‘100 years of League’ dinner in Innisfail with Lionel Williamson, Kerry Boustead and Billy Slater and I thought at the time - can a man on the planet ask for more? “If Cooper Cronk is out then they should win by 20 points but who knows? In football you can go on thinking that you’re going to win and you relax and the other mob try harder so you never ever know.

What A week FLEW OUT with Air NZ in time to go the Dally M Awards – where the best of the INRL season is celebrated. It should have been renamed the Jonathan Thurston Show, and you can underline how good he really is after that final. I owe a special vote of thanks to Vodafone Warriors CEO Jim Doyle and NRL boss Dave Smith, for organis- ing the treatment I received. It was terrific to catch up with all the Kiwis in the NRL, and men like Cameron Smith and Billy Slater from the Storm. Well Done THe Menzies Hotel Not surprisingly, I had a huge amount of work to do ahead of the 2005 Kiwis Reunion and fair play to the Menzies Hotel. They could not do enough for me. I totally recommend the place, the staff were awesome, nothing was too much trouble- and I am the first to admit I can be a bit demanding – but they totally got how important it was to me, and were right into having the Kiwis as guests. Grand Final Lunch Date I had the superb Carbine Club Grand Final lunch on Thursday, another chance to meet some of the good people I’ve been lucky enough to know through league. I was especially pleased to be there for two men I greatly admire, and who have both been huge servants of the Vodafone Warriors.

  • NRL Star Johnathan Thurston Backs Program to Vaccinate Against the Flu
MEDIA RELEASE 24 April, 2015 NRL star Johnathan Thurston backs program to vaccinate against the flu NORTH Queensland Cowboys player Johnathan Thurston has lent his support to this year’s “Tackle Flu Before It Tackles You” program. The public health program is aimed at protecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, aged over 15 years, from the complications of influenza (commonly known as the ‘flu’) by providing them with a free influenza vaccine. “Tackle Flu” clinics will be held in locations across the Darling Downs, South Burnett and South West Queensland regions in the coming weeks. Last year, more than 1000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were vaccinated against the flu as part of the program. In 2015, Darling Downs Public Health Unit director Dr Penny Hutchinson hopes to see more people vaccinated this year. “A lot of people don’t realise how serious the flu is and the complications that can occur,” Dr Hutchinson said. “These complications can lead to hospitalisations and even death. Members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait community are at a higher risk of developing these complications. “The flu can affect anyone, even first grade rugby league players, so we hope all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will follow Johnathan’s lead and get vaccinated this year.” During the clinics, eligible people who receive their flu vaccination will receive a free shirt designed by Roma artist Michael McGuane. The Tackle Flu Before It Tackles You program is a partnership between the Darling Downs Public Health Unit, the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service, the South West Hospital and Health Service, Darling Downs South West Queensland Medicare Local and the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation.

  • Joint Media Release
Joint Media Release Commonwealth Minister for Indigenous Affairs Senator the Hon. Nigel Scullion Queensland Minister for Housing and Public Works The Hon. Mick de Brenni MP Friday 1 April 2016 Cowboys, NRL and Governments team up for North Queenslanders A new joint initiative between the North Queensland Cowboys, the National Rugby League and State and Australian Governments, will help young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from remote areas in Queensland complete their education and find jobs. To be built on former Townsville TAFE land, NRL Cowboys House is being supported by a $9.5 million investment from the Australian Government and will provide accommodation for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from the beginning of the 2017 school year. Co-captain and Origin star Johnathan Thurston, with former champion fullback Matt Bowen, will be Cowboys Ambassadors for NRL Cowboys House which will be home to up to 50 students from remote areas in northern Queensland attending secondary schools in Townsville. Commonwealth Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion said NRL Cowboys House had been modelled on AFL Cape York House in Cairns which has operated successfully in Cairns for three years. “This new facility will provide accommodation for students from remote communities and ensure they have the best chance possible of completing high school and moving into the workforce or on to higher education,” Minister Scullion said. “The house will provide supported accommodation for male students aged 12 to 18 from remote areas so they can study in high schools throughout Townsville. “It will be home to 25 students in its first school year – 2017 – and it is planned to move to full capacity of 50 by 2018.” The $9.5 million grant was provided by the Australian Government through the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Indigenous Housing.
