Ernest of Penarth Papers Dates : [circa 1928]-2007 Level of description: Fonds Extent and medium: 0.10 cubic metres; 5 boxes Name of creator(s): Robert M. Ernest (1904-1991) and Anthony M. Ernest (1936-) Administrative/biographical history Robert Monroe Ernest (1904-1991) was born in Cartago, Costa Rica, the son of John Robert Ernest of Dundee and Elizabeth Monroe of Hartlepool, later of Penarth. His father's work as a Master Mariner led him to Costa Rica, where he settled with his family. John established a successful coffee plantation of some 3000 acres, 'Rosemount Estates' in Cartago Province, along with the 'Juan Vinas Concrete Products Co. Ltd', which manufactured concrete paving and kerbstones from imported South Wales Portland cement. John and Elizabeth raised five sons in Costa Rica, and sold their thriving estate to the country's government in 1947. Robert Monroe Ernest was educated at Westwood College, Penarth, travelling back to Costa Rica by sea for the long summer break. In the early 1930s he purchased the Costa Rica Coffee Co. Ltd., coffee and tea importers and merchants based at 14 Dumfries Place, Cardiff, from his uncle Ralph. The company moved to 1 and 2 Great Western Approach sometime around 1938. This allowed for expansion in response to trade with UK hotels and restaurants, in particular the Italian owned cafes of the south Wales valleys. The company purchased coffee from the family estate along with most of the principal coffee producing countries of the world.

    Agenda Item No. THE VALE OF GLAMORGAN COUNCIL CABINET: 19TH FEBRUARY 2018 REFERENCE FROM ENVIRONMENT AND REGENERATION SCRUTINY COMMITTEE: 18TH JANUARY 2018 “613 BARRY REGENERATION PROGRESS REPORT (REF) – The Head of Regeneration and Planning, in presenting the report, advised that Cabinet on 20th November, 2017 had received a copy of the report which apprised of past regeneration policies, programmes and projects in relation to Barry together with details of key issues and challenges for the future. The Cabinet had also referred the report to the Scrutiny Committee for its consideration. In order to elaborate further on the document, a short presentation was also provided a copy of which was tabled at the meeting. The presentation was divided into three parts: Part 1 – The Regeneration Challenge Part 2 – The Council’s Track Record of Targeted Investment and Place Making in Barry Part 3 – Emerging Projects, Policies and Funding Programmes. The report also highlighted that the socio-economic and cultural environment of Barry had changed dramatically over the last 100 years or so, with Committee being informed that the coal boom, as the nineteenth century turned into the twentieth century, a steady economic decline followed the inter-war period. The decline prompted a plethora of government-led regeneration and redevelopment initiatives stretching back to the late 1980s which differed in scale, scope and vision In referring to nineteenth century expansion, the Head of Service advised that there had been a unique combination of the port industrial hub, expansion of the town and Barry Island becoming a resort. In referring to the rise and decline of Barry, reference was made to the Barry Island Holiday Camp which had closed in the mid- 1990s, the fact that the Port No.

    YMDDIRIEDOLAETH GERDDI HANESYDDOL CYMRU WELSH HISTORIC GARDENS TRUST South and Mid Glamorgan Branch Visit to Coedarhdyglyn, St George-super-Ely, CF5 6SF on Friday 12th October at 2pm At the kind invitation of Rhodri Traherne our Branch will be visiting Coedarhydyglyn. a Grade II* garden is not open to the public, so this will be a rare opportunity to explore the gardens and wider parkland landscape. The house, which was commissioned by the Revd. John Montgomery Traherne in 1820, stands on the side of a deep valley in the centre of parkland and commands extensive views to the north. House and parkland together form a picturesque early C19th landscape. The topography of the site has largely determined the content of the grounds with woodland predominating. Terraced gardens immediately around the house are laid mainly to lawns. The Dell, a narrow spring fed valley to the south of the house, was developed as a woodland and water garden with strong Japanese influence by Llewellyn Edmund Traherne early in the C20th and is thought to have been the work of Alfred Parsons & Partners. The woodlands contain some notable plantings of rhododendrons and conifers, many of them planted by the present owner’s uncle Sir Cennydd Traherne and his wife Rowena who established the Cyprus garden and the Pinetum. The Pinetum is a special interest of our host who will accompany us on our tour. The entrance to Coedarhdyglyn is about ½ mile from Culverhouse Cross roundabout. Take to A48 to St Nicolas and, at the top of the hill, turn tight into a private driveway.
