Romanian Political Science Review vol. XXI, no. 1 2021 The end of the Cold War, and the extinction of communism both as an ideology and a practice of government, not only have made possible an unparalleled experiment in building a democratic order in Central and Eastern Europe, but have opened up a most extraordinary intellectual opportunity: to understand, compare and eventually appraise what had previously been neither understandable nor comparable. Studia Politica. Romanian Political Science Review was established in the realization that the problems and concerns of both new and old democracies are beginning to converge. The journal fosters the work of the first generations of Romanian political scientists permeated by a sense of critical engagement with European and American intellectual and political traditions that inspired and explained the modern notions of democracy, pluralism, political liberty, individual freedom, and civil rights. Believing that ideas do matter, the Editors share a common commitment as intellectuals and scholars to try to shed light on the major political problems facing Romania, a country that has recently undergone unprecedented political and social changes. They think of Studia Politica. Romanian Political Science Review as a challenge and a mandate to be involved in scholarly issues of fundamental importance, related not only to the democratization of Romanian polity and politics, to the “great transformation” that is taking place in Central and Eastern Europe, but also to the make-over of the assumptions and prospects of their discipline. They hope to be joined in by those scholars in other countries who feel that the demise of communism calls for a new political science able to reassess the very foundations of democratic ideals and procedures. -

Brandon Associate Professor [email protected] Department of Theatre and Speech Hillsdale College Hillsdale, MI ABSTRACT In prominent French social philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky’s Hypermodern Times (2005), the author asserts that the world has entered the period of hypermodernity, a time where the primary concepts of modernity are taken to their extreme conclusions. The conditions Lipovetsky described were already manifesting in a number of post-Soviet Russian films. In the tradition of Slavoj Zizek’s Enjoy Your Symptom (1992), this essay utilizes a number of post-Soviet Russian films to explicate Lipovetsky’s philosophy, while also using Lipovetsky’s ideas to explicate the films. -

NOUMENON AND PHENOMENON: READING ON KANT’S PROLEGOMENA Oleh: Wan Suhaimi Wan Abdullah1 ABSTRAK Makalah ini membahaskan satu dari isu besar yang diperkatakan oleh Kant dalam epistemologi beliau iaitu isu berkaitan ‘benda-pada-dirinya’ (noumenon) dan ‘penzahiran benda’ (phenomenon). Kaitan antara kewujudan kedua-dua hakikat ini dari segi ontologi dan kedudukan kedua-duanya dalam pengetahuan manusia dari segi epistemologi dibincangkan berdasarkan perspektif Kant. Semua ini dikupas berdasarkan penelitian terhadap suatu teks oleh Kant dalam karya agung beliau Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics That Will be Able to Present Itself as a Science. Kant secara umumnya tidak menolak kewujudan noumenon walaupun beliau seakan mengakui bahawa pendekatan sains sekarang tidak mampu menanggapi hakikat noumenon tersebut. Huraian makalah ini membuktikan bahawa tidak semua hakikat mampu dicapai oleh sains moden. Today’s “the most sexy thing”: virtual space or real life? ALEXANDRA DZIUBA - Odessa National Polytechnic University (ONPU) ABSTRACT The issues of Reality and Simulation of Reality are highlighted in this article. The nature of Desire is also discussed as a fundamental in contemporary culture and media environments. Special attention has been paid to advertising, as a form of creating desire and simulations of reality which stimulate growing frustrations in society. Online space is also been viewed as a new trend in the simulation of life and a faked advertising reality. In the article I attempt to compare both of these "worlds" – simulated by culture and virtualised by media. KEYWORDS Reality, simulation, media, advertising, sex, desire. Introduction A key issue in contemporary media and cultural studies is the question of what is Reality. Throughout history, humans were trying to comprehend their own existence and validity based on the reality of their own body and on the reality of everyday life. After a while, the human body started to lose its status as a bastion of reality. It happened with the help of growing interests in different kinds of “virtual” worlds, as well as the expansion of media influence. So, with rapid cultural transformations of the present the problem of definition of reality perhaps becomes the most difficult question. In this article I would like to discuss the general issues of Reality and simulations, which prevail in our society. Also, issues about the nature of desire and simulations of desires are considered as one of the main topics of this work. -

Art makes us pay atten- tion to it by presenting the familiar in a new and unfamiliar context and unsettles our presup- positions and reconceptualizes our way of thinking. I argue that by themselves, the concept of veiling and the concept of fashion are very familiar concepts to Indonesians, but that the practice of combining these two ideas brings something unfamiliar to that society. This new practice reveals a way of Being that combines religious piety with our current, late- modern, consumer society. The combination of fashion and veiling for piety discloses, in the Heideg- gerian sense, a new “world.” I begin by explicating the Heideggerian interpretation of the nature of art by looking at the key concepts that make a work of art work. First, art can only disclose new “worlds” when the new world is in intimate and essential tension with “earth” and when this tension is resolved by preservers who take up and actualize the new way of Being so that a people can be placed on a new path together, as a community. -

It is true that authors like Paul Virilio2 had already underscored the importance of speed in order to understand our times as early as in the 1970s. But at those times (still postmodern times?) speed was mainly connected to the use of analogic technolo- gies, like television or airplanes, as Alan N. Shapiro3 has pointed out; whereas in hypermodern times speed is connected mostly to the use of digital technologies, like computers and the Internet. This hypermodern alliance of speed and digital technologies explains, among others, the incredibly short time that it takes for some new words to become widely known and used on a global scale. This is what has happened to the term “post-truth”, which was elevated to the rank of “Word of the year” by Oxford Dictionaries in 2016. 24.201 Topics in History of Philosophy: KANT Phenomena and Noumena 1. Kant’s distinction. Kant distinguishes phenomena from things in themselves, or noumena. Kant usually uses the labels ‘noumenon’ and ‘thing in itself’ interchangeably (e.g. A254/B310), though there may be some subtle differences in meaning. In his chapter entitled ‘Phenomena and Noumena’ Kant draws out what he takes to be an important consequence of the arguments of the Analytic, namely that ‘everything which the understanding derives from itself is, though not borrowed from experience, at the disposal of the understanding solely for use in experience’ (A236/B296, see also A247/B303). Our knowledge is thus restricted to appearances, or phenomena. Why should this point about the limits of knowledge motivate a contrast between phenomena and something else, namely noumena? Kant says: …if we entitle certain objects, as appearances, sensible entities (phenomena), then since we thus distinguish the mode in which we intuit them from the nature that belongs to them in themselves, it is implied in this distinction that we place the latter, considered in their own nature…in opposition to the former, and that in so doing we entitled them intelligible entities (noumena). The question then arises, whether our pure concepts of understanding have meaning in respect of these latter, and so can be a way of knowing them (B306). That is a question to which Kant answers, at least officially, ‘no’. 2. ‘Noumenon’ in a negative vs. a positive sense (B307-8). We use ‘noumenon’ in a ‘negative sense’ when we ‘abstract from our mode of intuiting’ a thing, and mean ‘a thing so far as it is not an object of our sensible intuition’. -

Individuals are gnawed by anxiety; fear has superimposed itself on their pleasures, and anguish on their liberation. Everything worries and alarms them, and there are no longer any beliefs systems to which they can turn for assurance. These are hypermodern times.
