V raziskovalnem delu smo uporabili metodo analize vsebine. člena Kodeksa novinarjev Slovenije, predvsem s strani časnika Slovenske novice. iv A comparative content analysis of newspapers Večer and Slovenske novice Key words: mass media, journalism, newspaper, Večer, Slovenske novice UDK: 366.636:659.3(043.2) Abstract In today's information-flooded society, mass media have become an essential part of our lives with their work. One of the mass media, that daily informs readers about important events here and around the world, is the newspaper which is the main topic of our thesis. The purpose of our thesis is to determine how newspapers Večer and Slovenske novice perform their tasks as mass media, what kind of content they provide for the reader and how is that content presented. The final goal of our thesis is to show the reader the structure of the newspaper that he reads, since only by understanding the structure of the newspaper will he become literate and an active member of the democratic system. In our thesis we used content analysis as our research method. Based on the analysis, we found that the representation of journalistic genres and classes is good and diverse. We also found that the biggestt part of the content is represented by sports related journalistic articles. Based on the analysis, we also came to the conclusion that there are plenty of cases where the newspapers violate Article 10 of the Slovenian journalistic code (Kodeks novinarjev Slovenije). Mostly we found those violations when analyzing newspaper Slovenske novice. v KAZALO 1. • News Reporting About Genetically Modified Organisms in the Context of Different Journalistic Ideologies Karmen Erjavec* Melita Poler Kovačič**
Medij. istraž. (god. 17, br. 1-2) 2011. (75-95) IZVORNI ZNANSTVENI RAD UDK: 070:577.21 Primljeno: 15. lipnja 2011. News Reporting about Genetically Modified Organisms in the Context of Different Journalistic Ideologies Karmen Erjavec* Melita Poler Kovačič** SUMMARY The aim of this article is to research how Slovenian journalists carry out the professional ideology of objectivity, which is prevalently founded on the An- glo-American model of journalism and demands that journalists devote the same amount of space or time to all actors involved in an event. The study was performed on a case of news reporting about one of the most controversial biotechnological topics, i.e., the introduction of the cultivation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). All previous studies about news reporting on this topic in European media showed that journalists were mostly constructing the anti-GMOs discourse, based on sources which put the risks of GMOs at the forefront. Because these studies used only quantitative methods and analysed only the elite press, our study combines methods and includes diverse media in the sample. Both quantitative analysis (content analysis) and qualitative analy- sis (critical discourse analysis) of news items about GMOs, published in the Slovenian press, television programs and the press agency in 2009 and 2010 revealed that journalists predominantly cited sources which opposed the in- troduction of the cultivation of GMOs, and they explicitly expressed their own opinions, which were against GMOs. Journalists of tabloids were particularly negative in their views; they tried to mobilize the audience to boycott GMO- products. The research indicated that journalists did not follow the American tradition of equally citing different opinions about the topic and not express- * Dr.

• Implications of Foreign Ownership on Journalistic Quality in a Post-Communist Society: the Case of Finance
Informing Science Journal Volume 9, 2006 Implications of Foreign Ownership on Journalistic Quality in a Post-Communist Society: The Case of Finance Martine Robinson Beachboard and John C. Beachboard Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho, USA [email protected] [email protected] Abstract When freedom from Communism largely eliminated overt government censorship of newspapers, other political and business pressures appeared. Consequently, Southeastern European newspaper publishers faced threats to financial viability and editorial integrity. The editor-in-chief of one newspaper in the former Yugoslavian republic of Slovenia claims to have found freedom from political and advertiser influence after a global media conglomerate invested in the publication. Notably, the business daily Finance is the only hard-news start-up to survive in the eleven years since Slovenia gained independence from the Republic of Yugoslavia. This research paper offers a provocative example where international investment appears to have contributed to the democ- ratizing of media in a post-communist society. The paper is not intended to argue that foreign media investments are necessarily beneficial but to suggest some circumstances in which foreign media investment can be advantageous to the democratic aspirations of a society. Keywords: Media ownership, post-communist journalism, theories of the press, media and de- mocratization, Yugoslavian press, Slovenian news media. Background and Motivation for This Study “Democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried.” ~ Winston Churchill Churchill’s wry observation regarding the relative merits of alternative forms of government might well be paraphrased to apply to alternatives for organizing and funding a society’s journal- ism: Market-driven journalism, as commonly practiced in western democracies, appears to be the worst form of journalism except for all those other forms that have been tried.
