ABSTRACT COLLECT by Jacob Carl Harksen This Collection of Poems
ABSTRACT COLLECT by Jacob Carl Harksen This collection of poems seeks to explore the individual’s relation to the self and others, and between the lyric “I” and forms of collectivity, under the duress of 21st-century capitalism. The poems respond to certain political and economic pressures, including namely debt, and assert that poetry can be a meaningful aid in, if not site of, resistance to those pressures. The collection seeks to enact in poetry a political content, which is typically the province of a highly theorized discourse, by direct treatment of the lived world of feeling and belief. A narrative arc is developed over the course of the collection that tracks the radicalization of those feelings and beliefs in the life of an individual as they attempt to make answer to the pressures of capital in a variety of modes and forms. always bugged off of that like he always [imi tated] two people. I liked the way he freaked that. So on "Gimme The Loot" I really wanted to make people think that it was a different person [rhyming with me]. I just wanted to make a hot joint that sounded like two nig gas-a big nigga and a Iii ' nigga. And I know it worked because niggas asked me like, "Yo , who did you do 'Gimme The Loot' wit'?" So I be like, "Yeah, well, my job is done." I just got it from Slick though. And Redman did it too, but he didn't change his voice. What is the illest line that you ever heard? Damn ... I love that line. There's shit that G Rap done said. And Meth [on "Protect Ya Neck"]: "The smoke from the lyrical blunt make me ugh." Shit like that. I look for shit like that in rhymes. Niggas can just come up with that one Iii' piece. Like XXL: You've got the number-one spot on me chang in' the song, we just edited it. -
Experiments of Transpiration Cooling Inspired Panel Cooling on a Turbine Blade Yielding Film Effectiveness Levels Over 95% †
International Journal of Turbomachinery Propulsion and Power Article Experiments of Transpiration Cooling Inspired Panel Cooling on a Turbine Blade Yielding Film Effectiveness Levels over 95% † Augustin Wambersie 1,*, Holt Wong 1 , Peter Ireland 1 and Ignacio Mayo 2 1 Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford, Oxford OX1 3PJ, UK; [email protected] (H.W.); [email protected] (P.I.) 2 Rolls-Royce PLC, Derby DE24 8BJ, UK; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] † This paper is an extended version of our meeting paper published in the 14th European Turbomachinery Conference, Gdansk, Poland, 12–16 April 2021. Abstract: Panels were tested at different locations around the turbine blade, on both suction and pressure surfaces. Three different surface porosities were also tested. Results demonstrated that the approach can be very successful with high levels of film cooling effectiveness, exceeding 95%, achieved using low coolant mass flow rates. Increasing the surface porosity also proved to be an important parameter in the panel’s performance. Additionally, staggering the film holes lead to signif- icant positive interactions between individual films, resulting in much improved panel performance. Work for the People (or Forget about Fred Hampton) "If you ever think about me, & if you ain’t gonna do no revolutionary act, forget about me. I don’t want myself on your mind if you’re not gonna work for the people." — Fred Hampton Work/Play, More Power to the People Introduction On August 23rd, 1968, the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, members of the Youth International Party nominated a pig for president of the United States. The ring leaders of this gesture, the Chicago Seven, were put on trial for disorderly conduct in what has since become one of the most iconic farces of criminal justice in United States history. On August 23rd, 2018, the trial was restaged at Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar in Bridgeport. 50 years after her nomination, Pigasus flew again. So too would the memories, lessons, riots, murders, celebrations, & mournings of her age. A few blocks down Morgan Street, a small group of gallerists were planning their own tribute to the year nineteen hundred & sixty-eight. Local & national artists & revolutionaries occupied the Co-Prosperity Sphere via body & object from August 31st to September 30th - a month of unearthing pasts, undermining presents, & conjuring futures. This document hopes to bring these objects & happenings into one of these futures: one where they are unnecessary - redundant - dated; a future which learns from futures past & present; a prescient future; & a future which allows anniversaries to become celebrations. - Luke Cimarusti Participating Artists: Brandon Alvendia, Sofia Córdova, Jim DeRogatis, Jim Duignan, Chris Duncan, Lise Haller Baggesen, Robby Herbst, the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, Jason Lazarus, Jesse Malmed, Nicole Marroquin, Jennifer Moon, Josh Rios + Anthony Romero + Matthew Joynt, Emilio Rojas, Dan S. -

Contact: [email protected] Choutouts: Language contact and US-Latin hip hop on YouTube Matt Garley This paper presents a corpus-sociolinguistic analysis of lyrics and com- ments from videos for four US-Latinx hip hop songs on YouTube. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse. Choutouts: contacto lingüístico y el hip hop latinx-estadounidense en YouTube. Este estudio presenta un análisis sociolingüístico de letras de canciones y comentarios de cuatro videos de hip hop latinx-esta- dounidenses en YouTube. -

PROLOGUE Sidelines of chairs neatly divide the center field and a large stage stands erect. At its center, there is a stately podium flanked by disciplined men wearing the militaristic suits of the Fruit of Islam, a visible security squad. This is Ford Field, usually known for housing the Detroit Lions football team, but on this occasion it plays host to a different gathering and sentiment. The seats are mostly full, both on the floor and in the stands, but if you look closely, you’ll find that this audience isn’t the standard sporting fare: the men are in smart suits, the women dress equally so, in long white dresses, gloves, and headscarves. -
