Greek Currents in Australian Waters: Greek-Australians and the Sea, 1810s–2013* Leonard Janiszewski and Effy Alexakis The sea has been an important element in the history of both the ancient and modern Greeks, providing passage, local livelihoods and access to international trade. In the modern era, Antipodean waters have been part of this ongoing relationship. The sea brought the earliest Greek settlers to Australia, together with the majority of post-World War II Greek migrants, offering them employment opportunities, adventure, recreation and sport. This paper provides evidence of the significance of the Greek contribution to Australia’s maritime activities — a contribution that has helped to mould modern Australia’s connection with the sea. This presentation builds on material from two earlier research articles published by the authors (Janiszewski and Alexakis, 1997:48–50, 52; Janiszewski and Alexakis, 2002:10–11). Go as far inland as you can [in Greece] and you are never more than a day’s walk from the sight of the sea. It was by the sea that the first human inhabitants came to Greece, and by the sea that the island dwellers set out to seek their fortunes because the land could not support them. The Australian Government's continuous ship building strategy must be complemented by a capable and appropriately located ship refit and sustainment industry. 2. Through-life support of naval platforms is an integral part of capability procurement and should be considered up-front as part of decision-making and planning. 3. In terms of operational availability and reduced logistics costs and savings to the Australian taxpayer, Darwin-based ship refit and sustainment programs for naval platforms offer significant strategic benefits to the Department of Defence (Defence) and its contractors, Australian Border Force (Border Force), the offshore oil and gas industry, and the general maritime sector. 4. Steaming to either Singapore or Perth for sustainment involves a return journey of more than 8000km and 10 days duration, while steaming to Cairns involves a return journey of almost 5000km and 8 days duration. 5. Darwin is the most likely location for mounting military, national security and humanitarian operations to Australia's north and northwest. Darwin is rapidly growing as a key hub for home port maintenance to service Defence, Border Force, the offshore oil and gas industry, and general maritime activity. 6. The Northern Territory Government is making investments in skills and infrastructure to support growth of the ship refit and sustainment industry. 7.     Australia’s Top 100 Private Family Firms Dr Linda Glassop Family Business Research Program School of Management & Marketing Deakin University April, 2009 Executive Summary When ownership is concentrated in a few individuals, and/or family members, differences in management approaches are apparent. Data about ownership concentration in Australian organisations is difficult to secure, with the exception of publicly listed firms. In an Australian first, this study examines the Top 500 private Australian firms to ascertain the extent to which family firms are present. The findings reveal that family firms contribute significantly to Australia’s economic and social stability. There are 121 family firms (24%) in the Top 500 private Australian firms. On average, these top family firms contribute around A$42m (12%) more revenue per firm than their non‐ family counterparts and employee approximately 303 (30%) more employees. The economic and social significance of these differences position family firms as an important part of the Australian economy. Research into the unique issues facing family firms must not be overlooked in a bid to treat all organisations as homogenous. In the pre-culturing era, all oceanic (saltwater) pearls were classified as Oriental pearls, and South Sea pearls fell into this generic category. With the advent of pearl culturing, however, pearls became more accurately known for the type of oyster that produced them and the region in which those oysters grew— hence the term South Sea pearls.
