Course Requirements: adequate preparation of assigned primary texts and supplementary readings, demonstrated by thoughtful contributions to class discussion and short response papers as assigned; three comprehensive, in-class quizzes based on assigned readings and class lectures; a final 5-6 page paper due the last day of class. This course fulfills the following SAS core curriculum requirements: Social and Historical Analysis Understand the bases and development and human and societal endeavors across time and place. Explain and be able to assess the relationship among assumptions, method, evidence, arguments, and theory in social and historical analysis. Historical Analysis (HSt) Explain the development of some aspect of a society or culture over time, including the history of ideas or history of science. Employ historical reasoning to study human endeavors. Grading: Grades will be based on three quizzes and a final exam in the exam period following the end of term (60%), an 8-page paper (20%) and classroom participation, including occasional, short response papers (20%).

Christophe Jaffrelot Christophe Jaffrelot is senior research fellow at the Centre d’études et de recherches internationales (CERI) at Sciences Po in Paris, and director of research at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS). His books include Religion, Caste, and Politics in India (2011). In 1976, India’s Constitution of 1950 was amended to enshrine secular- ism. Several portions of the original constitutional text already reflected this principle. Article 15 bans discrimination on religious grounds, while Article 25 recognizes freedom of conscience as well as “the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion.” Collective as well as indi- vidual rights receive constitutional recognition.

NARIMAN, J. Leave granted. 1. The present appeal arises out of the demolition of Babri Masjid. We are concerned in this case with two FIRs lodged on 6th December, 1992. The first viz. Crime No.197 of 1992, is against lakhs of kar sewaks alleging the offences of dacoity, robbery, causing of hurt, injuring/defiling places of public worship, promoting enmity between two groups on grounds of religion, etc. The IPC offences were, therefore, under Sections 153-A, 295, 297, 332, 337, 338, 395 and 397. The second FIR 1 viz. FIR No.198 of 1992 was lodged against eight persons named therein - Mr. L.K. Advani, Mr. Ashok Singhal, Mr. Vinay Katiar, Ms. Uma Bharati, Ms. Sadhvi Ritambara, Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Mr. Giriraj Kishore and Mr. Vishnu Hari Dalmia, two of whom are dead due to passage of time viz. Mr. Ashok Singhal and Mr. Giriraj Kishore. The FIR alleges offences under Sections 153-A, 153-B and Section 505 IPC. 46 further FIRs pertaining to cognizable offences and 1 FIR pertaining to non- cognizable offences were also lodged. Initially, a Special Court set up at Lalitpur was to try these cases but subsequently notifications were issued by the State Government, after consultation with the High Court, dated 8 th September, 1993 whereby these cases were to be tried by a Special Court at Lucknow.

As you know, there are four different ages: Satya-yuga, Treta-yuga, Dvapara-yuga and Kali-yuga. People in Satya­ yuga lived for almost 100,000 years whereas in Kali-yuga they live for 100 years at best. In each age there is a different process for self­ realization or understanding God .

These include projects of Rs 2256.01 crore in Uttar Pradesh, of Rs 2155.62 crore in Bihar, of Rs 99.36 crore in Jharkhand, of Rs 1352.51 crore in West Bengal and of Rs 378.41 crore in Uttarakhand.
