  • Is Excited to Feature a Diverse Slate of Over 50 Speakers for the 2020 AMS
The Student Conference Planning Committee (SCPC) is excited to feature a diverse slate of over 50 speakers for the 2020 AMS Student Conference! We are grateful that our speakers provided biographical sketches before the conference. Please take advantage of these biographies to learn more about our speakers and think about which sessions you’d like to attend in Boston. Gaige Kerr, Kenzie Krocak, and Matt Flournoy 2020 Student Conference Chairpersons Dr. Sean Arms: Sean Arms is a Software Engineer at the NSF funded Unidata Program Center, one of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR)'s Community Programs (UCP). Born and raised in the rural karstlands of southern Indiana, Sean’s interest in meteorology began before he was even in kindergarten. However, it was in the 8th grade that he learned that there was this thing called “college” where he could learn all about the science behind the weather. After graduating high school in the year 2000, he packed up and headed west to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned his BS (2004), MS (2006), and, eventually, PhD (2014). His studies at OU were focused on observational boundary layer meteorology (the “lesser whirls”, if you will), and often involved deploying various types of instrumentation. During his time at OU, he was a TA for the junior level Meteorological Measurements course for multiple semesters, and taught the full course in his final fall semester on campus. With his incredible advisor (Dr. Petra Klein) and one of his committee members (Dr. Alan Shapiro) leading the way, he prioritized getting undergraduate students “into the field” as part of the regular undergraduate curriculum.

  • State of the News Media 2013” Chapters on Local Television News, Network News and Cable News Digital: As Mobile Grows Rapidly, the Pressures on News Intensify
Overview In 2012, a continued erosion of news reporting resources converged with growing opportunities for those in politics, government agencies, companies and others to take their messages directly to the public. Signs of the shrinking reporting power are documented throughout this year’s report. Estimates for newspaper newsroom cutbacks in 2012 put the industry down 30% since 2000 and below 40,000 full‐time professional employees for the first time since 1978. In local TV, our special content report reveals, sports, weather and traffic now account on average for 40% of the content produced on the newscasts studied while story lengths shrink. On CNN, the cable channel that has branded itself around deep reporting, produced story packages were cut nearly in half from 2007 to 2012. Across the three cable channels, coverage of live events and live reports during the day, which often require a crew and correspondent, fell 30% from 2007 to 2012 while interview segments, which tend to take fewer resources and can be scheduled in advance, were up 31%. Time magazine, the only major print news weekly left standing, cut roughly 5% of its staff in early 2013 as a part of broader company layoffs. And in African‐ American news media, the Chicago Defender has winnowed its editorial staff to just four while The Afro cut back the number of pages in its papers from 28‐32 in 2008 to around 16‐20 in 2012. A growing list of media outlets, such as Forbes magazine, use technology by a company called Narrative Science to produce content by way of algorithm, no human reporting necessary.

  • Weather) Girls Just “Wanna Have Fun”?
University of Nevada, Reno Do (Weather) Girls Just “Wanna Have Fun”?: A Survey of Broadcast Meteorologist Stereotypes and Experiences A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Geography by Nyssa Perryman Rayne Dr. Paul F. Starrs / Dissertation Advisor December, 2020 NYSSA PERRYMAN RAYNE December, 2020 i ABSTRACT The historical caricature of the “weather girl” comes from the original women (primarily actresses and entertainers) who broke into the field of broadcast meteorology in the mid-1950s, with little in the way of educational or experiential background in me- teorology or climatology. Instead, these women were hired to increase station ratings as a gimmick, and, as a result, cemented the ditzy, blonde, sexy, often unintelligent “weather girl” stereotype that persists in the field today. This dissertation delves into the historical context of the “weather girl” stereotype, exploring the present-day ramifications of this cultural caricature through an analysis of popular media, in addition to two distinct sur- veys of current broadcast meteorologists. Our research finds that movies and TV shows further reinforce the negative attributes of the “weather girl” stereotype, portraying these women as unintelligent and overtly sexualized, and thus adding to the sexism and per- ceived lack of trust and credibility more generally afforded women in our patriarchal so- ciety. Additionally, our survey findings show that the “weather girl” stereotype serves as a negative lens through which women and men weathercasters still view women broad- cast meteorologists, further driving deep-set weathercaster beliefs that women unfairly “get ahead” in the field by using their beauty rather than their brains.

Family caregivers also can receive grief and loss counseling for up to a year following the beneficiary’s death. However, a recent study found that hospice services had only a modest impact on symptoms of depression in surviving spouses. The study, published online in JAMA Internal Medicine earlier this week, examined symptoms of depression among 1,016 surviving spouses. The study could not determine how many of the spouses received bereavement benefits because that service is not billed separately from other Medicare hospice services. As a believer in the benefits of hospice, lead author Katherine Ornstein, PhD, an epidemiologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, called the modest impact of hospice on depressive symptoms of surviving spouses “disappointing.” However, “I think it’s more of an opportunity to say hospice already has a system set up to help families, and what more can we do?” -Katherine Ornstein, PhD, Assistant Professor, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Learn more: http://khn.org/news/medicare-pays-for-spouses-to-get-grief-counseling-through-hospice/ Additional
