He talks to HKClubbing about how it all began, his sister’s influence on his music and his intriguingly entitled album, “We Ar Lyve”. HKClubbing: So how did it all begin? Moguai: In the beginning of the 90’s there were those Techno parties in Düsseldorf AND that was the first time I was in contact with that music. It was all so new and revolutionary to me- the people, the music, the whole thing that I was so attracted to it from the first moment. HKC: Where did the name come from? Moguai: My older sister studied architecture and was working on a project to create a club in Barcelona. She named the project “Moguai”. I loved that name and so my artist name was born. HKC: Did the DJing, Production or Promoting come first? Moguai: The DJing came first and the rest came naturally, step by step. HKC: Who and what are your influences? Moguai: Sven Väth with his “HR3 Clubnight“ had a great influence on me. My sister used to listen to music from Nina Hagen or DAF, which were always a bit different to popular music and the public liking, so that influenced me as well. HKC: How would you describe your sound? Moguai: Emotional, vintage, electro, punk rock. HKC: Which other countries have you ever played at/put on? Moguai: Too many to mention ;) Recently I have played in the United States, England, Ireland, Ibiza, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, Russia, Austria or Switzerland, and Germany of course. HKC: What’s the music scene like in Germany? Moguai: I think Techno is still huge in Germany! HKC: How did you start working with Mau5trap? Moguai: Last year summer, I sent some tracks to mau5trap, and Joel immediately signed several songs. So I thought: “Hey, if he likes my singles, he might like my album! “ For me it was either mau5trap, or no label at all. So one year, several EP´s and an album later, here I am! The album had a great impact on my career during the last few months but there are still so many great things to come, and so many great tracks to be released. HKC: Out of all the tunes you have, which one ‘never fails’? Moguai: “U know Y“ never fails. This tune still works every time I play it! HKC: First record you have bought? Moguai: Falco - Alles klar Herr Komissar?! My sister influenced me a lot in my taste of music. She heard this song so often in the eighties and I bought the single. I think I was 12 years old at the time. HKC: How is the HK scene in your eyes at the moment? Moguai: To be honest, I have no clue! It´s my first time here in HK but I have heard so many great things from artists who have played here recently. I’m really excited! HKC: What’s your favourite thing about HK? Moguai: It´s always a great experience to visit new countries, cities and meet new people, and from what I have heard HK is a very special place! HKC: Other DJs you rate? Moguai: Deadmau5, Steve Angello and of course the Swedish House Mafia- what they’re doing at the moment is phenomenal. HKC: What do you do outside of the dance music scene? Moguai: I love to spend time with my wife and friends, nothing too special here! HKC: What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Promoters? Moguai: Stay focused and be patient. HKC: Tell us about your album “We are Lyve” on Mau5trap. Moguai:The album has an organic touch, psychedelic influences, as well as hard electronic facets. All in all it is a telling a story. After many successful single releases over the past years I decided to get back to my roots, producing music in the underground (my studio is basically in the cellar now). My album just evolved in the making. HKC: Any forthcoming gigs coming up? Moguai: All upcoming gigs are on my website moguai.com and on my facebook page facebook.com/djmoguai. HKC: What’s next on the steam train Moguai? Do you have upcoming productions or singles? Moguai:There is a lot of upcoming stuff. A single I did with German Techno legend WestBam will be released on Skint, a new EP on mau5trap, and another HUGE release on Steve Angello´s Size Records. I am also currently working on my next album which will be released spring next year. Catch DJ Moguai on 17 September at Volar, 11pm. • Just Say No to Deadmau5: New Vegas Club Sets Harsh (And Hilarious) DJ Rules
Just Say No to Deadmau5: New Vegas Club Sets Harsh (and Hilarious) DJ Rules February 4, 2014 7:01 PM (Theo Wargo/Getty Images) By Scott T. Sterling Doing some after-hours clubbing in Las Vegas, but want to avoid hip-hop, Lil Jon shout-outs and anything related to Deadmau5, Tiesto or Calvin Harris? Have we got the spot for you. Earlier this week, sparkling new Vegas hotspot AFTER launched with a considerable bang when the venueʼs strict rules for DJs playing after 3 a.m. were posted on the internet. Among those rules include playing no trap or dubstep whatsoever (sorry, Skrillex), with Avicii, LMFAO and all incarnations of Swedish House Mafia (including music produced by any of the individual ex-members) among those on the “do not play” list. Rising EDM star Martin Garrix (“Animals“) is also among the forbidden artists, although his entry is inexplicably augmented with the pointed insult of calling the 17-year-old DJ/producer a “douche.” Getting beyond the banned music, aficionados of DJ culture will be happy to see that the club wonʼt allow less-than-stellar jocks to simply rest on technology, outlawing premixed sets (chastising those who use them as “lazy ass”) or features on such programs as Serato and Traktor that make mixing a much easier proposition. Most DJs will approve of the “no music requests” stipulation, while audiences will appreciate the demand that jocks “not say a f**king word on the microphone.” Other requests are more along the lines of common sense, such as not placing beverages near delicate electronic equipment.

Introduction Electronic Dance Music (EDM) culture today is often times associated with top mainstream DJs and producers such as Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, and David Guetta. These are artists who have established their career around DJing and/or producing electronic music albums or remixes and have gone on to headline world-renowned music festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Coachella. The problem is that the term “DJ” can be mistakenly used interchangeably between someone who mixes between pre-recorded pieces of music at a venue with a set of turntables and a mixer and an artist who manipulates or creates music or audio live using a combination of computers, hardware, and/or controllers.
