PARISH NOTES (.JULY, 1955) Loders, Dottery and As·kerswell. The Parish Notes enter t heir eighth year of publication this month. They began in July, 1948, when 100 copies were printed and llO were sold. (Our resourceful distributors are nothing daunted by minor details like lack of COpieS - Wh en COpieS are ShQrt I ,they sell , the, SOJne OJ:}e t-,·rice,, Or eVen three times). The cir'cul.ttion is now upwards of 200, and the number of readers is anybody's guess; for a single copy may be r ead by every member of a household who can read, sent on to relations ' in, say, London, arid end up creased, soiled, and hardly l egible in Australia. That the London news papers may b e done v.rithout ·:ras demonstrated by the r ecent newspaper strike, but it is less c ert ai n that life i n t hese parts could b e sustained without the Notes, VJ.r s . Harry Legg and J-,{rs . George Gale will bear us out in this; for it is t hey, and the ot her distributors, ,·rho get the black looks when the Notes fail t o appear on time , What the a ttract ion of these Notes is we do not know, unless it be t hat t hey are intensely local. Perhaps this was in the mind of the Uploders l ady who s aid the Notes were better than the New·s of the World. After all, the News of t he World is bound to be go spel truth, b ecause it t el ls you things you did not know; ·7rhereas the Notes are about t he things you kno·,: , about yoursl:llv es even, and you get a kiok out of this monthly demonstration of ·Nhat lies a Vicar can tell.

PARISH' NOTES (MAY, 1957) Loders, Dottery and Askerswell. The Lateness of Easter, combined with the mild spring weather; had a marked and not at all unpleasin~ e~~ect on the floral decoration of our churches. Instead o~ the unrelieved yellow of primroses, daffodils and forsythia, we had a tinting .of tulips, cherryblossam, bluebells and polyanthus, and at Loders the entire bowl of the font was done in cowslips, which are normally an A.scensiontide flower. Again we are indebted to the ladies who made our drurches so festive, and to the chilBren who made of Loders porch a .Joseph of .Arima.thea1 s garden, complete with pond and ducks. The Easter weather vms all that could be desired, and ·enabled friends who had come from the cities to see the countryside at its best. Services began with a seven .o 1 clock co:n:mrunion at Loders. As the wind was in the right direction; the early risers were 1 met on the church path by the IllUSic of Bridport St• Ms.ry s bells 1 greeting the greatest aay in the year with a :gesurrection fanfare. At Dottery a large and bright morning congregation were waiting for the Easter· cOmmunion; and at Askerswell the quiet approaches to the church were gay with Viive.s and daughters in their Easter finery~ At Loders a score of Sc,outs who were camping in the park staked an early claim to the seats ·in the Ladye Chapel; and peop],e who came late;r:- - including a lot of old friends on holiday whom it was delightful to see - had much diffici..llty in finding billets.
