Science Factors associated with survival and return to function in horses with synovial infection in an Australian context were reported, supporting evidence-based clinical decision making. Research of molecular techniques for the diagnosis of synovial infection provides new information on the diagnostic performance of these methods. The thesis contributes important knowledge regarding outcomes and diagnostic strategies to optimise welfare in horses with synovial infection.

Brett James BILES Strong Men: Aboriginal community development of a cardiovascular exercise and health education program.

The study ‘Strong Men: Aboriginal community development of a cardiovascular exercise and health education program’ evaluated the impacts of a culturally appropriate exercise and health education program on risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease, and explored Aboriginal men’s experience of the program. Using a strengths-based approach, this research makes a valuable contribution to improving Aboriginal men’s health and wellbeing outcomes.

Martin David Anderson COMBS Investigating the aetiology, pathogenesis and mitigation of perennial ryegrass toxicity using ovine and murine modes. This thesis evaluates the efficacy of bromide for treatment of Perennial Ryegrass Toxicosis (PRGT). Ovine and murine disease models of PRGT were developed and used to assess bromide as a PRGT treatment, demonstrating that bromide is effective at reducing both tremor and ataxia. By demonstrating its efficacy, high safety margin and good oral bioavailability, the results of this thesis lead to bromide receiving a patent as a therapeutic for this important disease.

Neeta Shriram KARVE Impact of Germination on Yellow Pea Flour Functionality This study evaluated the impact of germination on the functionality of yellow pea flour (YPF) and its various fractions. The study indicated that a 6 day germination period induced changes in protein molecular weight distribution, water solubility, particle size distribution and starch surface structure. These changes resulted in an increase in water solubility, peak viscosity, gel strength and decreased hydration properties. The results suggest that modification by germination can produce changes in the functional properties of YPF that will increase its value in the food industry.

It definitely has its challenges and you need to work hard and have lots of resilience, but overall the career is very interesting and enjoyable.”

Charles Sturt University Graduation Program 2020 Page XI Tammy O’Connor admits she is one of those rare and lucky people who knew early on how she wanted to make a real and lasting impact on this world. “I studied a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University and I knew as soon as I started that I wanted to become a midwife. To me it seemed like such an awesome career. “After graduating I worked as a registered nurse and quickly enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at Charles Sturt while working in the maternity unit as a student midwife. The uni gave me a great platform to learn in a safe environment, and provided a good stepping stone into my career. That’s why, in 2016, I completed a Master of Midwifery through Charles Sturt University. It opened the door to those higher level positions, including my current role as a clinical midwifery consultant for the Western NSW Local Health District. “The beauty of nursing and midwifery is it can take you anywhere.” Tammy’s ‘anywhere’ turned out to be parts of NSW which rarely received the health and educational support services they required. Realising women in remote areas needed access to antenatal and postnatal care, Tammy has been instrumental in implementing an outreach maternity program. Tammy “I believe it’s a basic human right for women to access a midwife during their pregnancy, regardless of their location. Working and living regionally provides me with O’Connor the opportunity to work within the primary health care model of midwifery. It’s what I love!” Bachelor of Nursing

Courtney Glazebrook is creating new beginnings by treasuring the past. Passionate about Indigenous education, she is driven to make a difference in the lives of young Aboriginal children by giving them the best start to their educational journey. As the director of Towri Multifunctional Aboriginal Children’s Service, each day, when she opens the Towri doors, Courtney makes practical progress in her quest to cultivate a strong, connected and inclusive community. “Towri encompasses health, education, community engagement and family support. Early childhood care has such great flow-on effects for families. While we’re providing care for children we’re also building platforms for parents, giving them the opportunity for employment and better health. We are building the capacity of whole communities. When children thrive so do communities. “I have the opportunity to create tangible change. What Courtney we do, what we teach and what we advocate for directly impacts upon the community and everyone in it. I have learned, through my Charles Sturt University studies and Glazebrook through my career, to question different regimes of truth. “Aboriginal people are strong. We are connected. We are Bachelor of Education progressive. And at Towri we are creating new beginnings (Birth to Five Years) for those who come through. That really excites me.”

Charles Sturt University Graduation Program 2020 Page XIII Chandan Rauniyar Bachelor of Information Technology

Chandan Rauniyar has long been fascinated by the power of computing and the impact it can have on people’s lives.

“I have always been amazed by computers and what complex software could do. I was interested in software development and it seemed like such an awesome career – being able to develop complex computer software that is capable of transforming lives.

“So I decided to study a Bachelor of Information Technology at the Charles Sturt University Study Centre in Melbourne. I majored in software development, learning about the principles of data structures, and database design, as well as the ethics and security issues around computing. ”

With a little help from the Study Centre team, Chandan was able to step into his career at the cutting edge of software development with confidence.

“After graduating, I managed to secure a scholarship for Study Centre Melbourne’s Internship Program. With help from the careers team, I got selected as an intern at an IT company in Melbourne. As an intern, I was able to apply and develop my skills in the context of a small business. This invaluable industry experience helped me in then landing my first job as a software developer in a multinational company.”
