A Service of Thanksgiving to Mark the 70Th Anniversary of Ve
Westminster Abbey A SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING TO MARK THE 70 TH ANNIVERSARY OF VE DAY Sunday 10 th May 2015 11.00 am FOREWORD Welcome to Westminster Abbey for this service of thanksgiving and commemoration on the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe. The Abbey played a full part on the day itself. After making his public broadcast officially announcing Germany’s total surrender, the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill MP, went to the House of Commons to make a short address and then moved that the House attend at the Church of St Margaret’s, Westminster, the Parish Church of the House of Commons, to ‘give humble and reverent thanks to almighty God for our deliverance from the threat of German domination.’ The House then rose and followed the Speaker to the Church. In Westminster Abbey itself, on VE Day, short services of thanksgiving were held every hour from 9.00 am to 10.00 pm. An estimated 25,000 people attended during the day, with the Lord Chancellor and House of Lords attending at 3.00 pm. The short services offered ‘high praise and thanksgiving to the God of all mercies for the success which He has granted to us and to our Allies: for the faith which has upheld us through the years of danger and suffering; for the skill of our leaders and the valour and steadfastness of sailors, soldiers and airmen; for the hope that we are about to enter upon a righteous and abiding peace; for the holy memory and high example of that great company of men and women, known and unknown, whose faith and courage God has inspired and used.’ A service was also held on the following Sunday, 13th May, when the standards of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa were laid on the High Altar to symbolise the loyalty of the whole Empire during the war. -

VOLUME XLIII, NUMBER 2, FALL 2018 Don Schroder Don Ryan Hulvat CHRISTMAS CONCERT – Bach & Respighi by David Ruhf FOR THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS CONCERTS, Greg Funfgeld has created a program of a numerical palindrome, Cantatas BWV 36 and 63. Bridging these two gems of Bach’s repertory is a rarely-heard bonbon by the late-Romantic (some might even say impressionist) Italian composer, Ottorino Respighi, performed by The Bach Choir for the first time in these concerts. We set out on a grand Christmas journey, from the joyful, almost whimsical expectation of Advent in Cantata No. 36, to a stunningly lyrical and opulently rendered pastiche of medieval musical allusions and the pastoral sounds of double reeds in the Respighi, to an exegetical celebration of the Nativity story, etched in metal and marble, with some of Bach’s most celebratory and most cosmic writing in Cantata No. 63. We begin with a cantata that had many earlier lives as secular works of tribute to various patrons and dignitaries in Bach’s pre-Leipzig existence, and which was finally codified into the form we will perform, well into his tenure as the Thomaskantor, which was given its first performance in 1731. Perhaps because the first Sunday in Advent was the only one on which there was any concerted music in Leipzig (the remaining three Sundays prior to Christmas were considered tempus clausum, or quiet time), Bach pulls out all the stops in this ebullient work. Beginning with an opening chorus featuring vivid text painting of praise soaring joyfully aloft, featuring as interpolations the chorales Savior of the Nations, Come and How Brightly Shines the Morning Star, including a time-stopping soprano aria accompanied by muted violin, and concluding with a doxological hymn of praise, this cantata demonstrates Bach’s total mastery as a reviser of his own work, recontextualizing the earlier material into a piece that seems tailor-made for Advent. -

While its focus rests on just a few days of the year, the wealth of music that has been written to mark its spirit and story is astonishingly plentiful and varied. Musicians continue to be inspired by the message of Christmas: in the following pages you will find examples of contemporary choral works by British composers John Tavener, James MacMillan and Sasha Johnson Manning alongside the established masterpieces of composers such as J. S. Bach, Handel and Berlioz. The Christmas story has also been recorded in opera, ballet and instrumental music, in a range of expression that runs from piety to jollity. Easy-listening compilations are well represented in the listings, including regional collections and the gamut of carols that are annual favourites, heard either in the splendour of Europe's historic cathedrals or in the local community. Palindromes, Symmetries and Mini-Canons in Bach Chorale BWV 32/6 By Luke Dahn 24 July 2008; rev. 9 April 2014 Bach closes Cantata 32 Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen with a setting of the final verse of Paul Gerhardt’s “Weg, mein Herz, mit den Gedanken” using Louis Bourgeois’s tune “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele.” A total of seven chorale settings of the Bourgeois tune are found in the choral works of Bach, indicating a particular fondness for it.
