The Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago Grants Awarded December 2019 Economic Security/Legal Reform for Women & Girls Adva Center: Empowering the Empowerers – Giving Mayoral Advisors on Gender Equality the Requisite Support and Skills to Advance Tangible Structural Changes for Women and Girls Grant Amount: $20,000 Empowering the Empowerers will train, support, and coach Mayoral Advisors on Gender Equality in three geographic regions throughout Israel to most effectively meet the needs of their respective municipalities. In addition to forming learning networks, the project will create a manual as a resource for advisors in the future. ACLU: Roger Baldwin Foundation: Women’s and Reproductive Rights Project (WRRP) Renewal Grant Amount: $25,000 The Women’s and Reproductive Rights Project, a multi-faceted initiative, protects and expands access to medical care and information for women in Illinois. WRRP defends past victories, such as the Reproductive Health Act, against pending lawsuits, works to expand protections around health care for women, and conducts public advocacy relating to religious refusal. La’ Ofek – Hope for the Future: Achotenu - Academic Nursing Program for Ethiopian-Israelis Renewal Grant Amount: $15,000 Achotenu provides intensive five-year support for Ethiopian Israeli women pursuing a career in nursing, from the university application process through job placement. Achotenu helps women break out of the cycle of poverty, seeks to make university admissions policies more equitable, and works to eliminate pervasive stigmas towards Ethiopians in Israeli society. Ma'ase Center Association: Women's Leadership Training from Pre-Army to College Age Grant Amount: $8,250 The Women's Leadership Training is a three-stage program that provides structure and support for marginalized Israeli teens from the socioeconomic and geographic peripheries in order to increase their economic mobility. The program begins with their volunteer gap year, continues throughout service in the IDF, and concludes after an alumni year. Mavoi Satum: Supreme Court Appeals Department: Advancing Change in the Realm of Personal Status in the State of Israel Renewal Grant Amount: $30,000 The Supreme Court Appeals Department aims to curb the incidents of get refusal in the state of Israel through a multi-pronged approach which includes: legislative work to submit precedent setting appeals to the Supreme Court; grassroots initiatives, such as private wedding ceremonies, which challenge the power of the Rabbinate; and press and social media campaigns. Olim Beyahad: Employment, Empowerment, and Leadership for Ethiopian Israeli Women Grant Amount: $20,000 Olim Beyahad increases the employment rate among Ethiopian Israeli university graduates by promoting their integration into the forefront of Israel's workforce and giving them an equal opportunity to attain appropriate jobs that suit their academic degree. Participants become role models for Ethiopian Israeli women and the wider society. Shatil – New Israel Fund Initiative for Social Change: Promoting Women in Public Housing Renewal Grant Amount: $15,000 Shatil empowers and trains affected women to become advocates in favor of more equitable and fair public housing for themselves and their communities, especially those who are low income and/or single parent households. Building upon the success of its Public Housing Forum, Shatil will develop a formal network of self-led activists who will engage in education and advocacy on a deeper level. 1 The Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago Grants Awarded December 2019 The Center for Advancement of Women in the Public Sphere (WIPS) at the Van Leer Institute: The Gender Index Renewal Grant Amount: $15,000 The Gender Index is an annual monitoring and intervention tool that tracks gender inequality using a variety of indicators in order to provide quantitative data for policy and decision makers. By sharing its results widely with feminist nonprofits, activists, policy makers, and other Israeli citizens, the Gender Index seeks to catalyze social change for women and girls in Israel. Women of the Wall: Claiming What's Ours Renewal Grant Amount: $7,500 Women of the Wall (WOW) works to attain social and legal recognition for women to pray freely at the Western Wall (Kotel). Claiming What’s Ours educates Israeli and diaspora girls, women, and male allies across denominations about gender equality and religious pluralism in the public sphere. Additionally, WOW engages in advocacy to create an equitable, pluralistic Israeli society. Education/Leadership Development for Women & Girls jGirls Magazine: General Operating Support Renewal Grant Amount: $12,500 jGirls Magazine is an online magazine and community for self-identifying Jewish teenage girls to share their voices with the world and each other. Student editors hone their communication skills, address timely issues, and engage with a community of peers reaching readers around the world. By providing this forum for expression and exploration, jGirls cultivates the next generation of bold, committed Jewish female leaders. Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois: Notorious RBG: The Life & Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Special Exhibition & Programming) Grant Amount: $7,500 The Illinois Holocaust Museum honors the survivors and victims of the Holocaust by teaching universal lessons that combat hatred, prejudice, and indifference and by inspiring visitors to become upstanders, as opposed to bystanders. The museum will host the first retrospective exhibition on Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The exhibit and related programs will tell RBG's story of activism and fighting for justice, inspiring visitors of all ages to engage in advocacy and work to create a more equitable world. Metro Chicago Hillel (MCH): Women and Judaism Grant Amount: $7,500 Silverstein Base Hillel, a center in Lincoln Park for college students and young adults, will expand upon its Women and Judaism pilot learning series. A cohort of female-identifying participants ages 18 – 30 will learn and explore their Jewish and female identities in a progressive space. The course will help make Judaism accessible and relevant to participants as well as nurture and mentor the young women as future community leaders and catalysts for positive change on campus and beyond. Ohr Torah Stone: Susi Bradfield Women's Institute of Halakhic Leadership (WIHL) Renewal Grant Amount: $15,000 The Women’s Institute of Halakhic Leadership is a five-year, elite institute in Israel that trains women scholars in Talmud and halakha (Jewish Law), giving them equal opportunity to learn and gain recognition and respect for their studies. Graduates will be certified as spiritual leaders, authorized to provide direction in halakhic matters. Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom: From Apathy to Empathy - Action Focused Response to Hate: Chicago Regional Gathering of Muslim and Jewish Women Renewal Grant Amount: $10,750 SOSS builds trust, respect, and relationships between American Muslim and Jewish women. The 2020 workshop will use interfaith experts and consultants to train local Jewish and Muslim leaders, members, and potential members in spiritual activism so they have the specific skills, tools, and tactics to respond to hate crimes, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia. 2 The Jewish Women’s Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago Grants Awarded December 2019 The Rosh Pina Mainstreaming Network (dba Kaleidoscope): Early Childhood Educators as Leaders of Diversity Education Grant Amount: $15,000 Kaleidoscope serves students, parents, and educators from kindergarten to high school in Arab and Jewish communities across Israel and around the world to create a culture accepting of the other. This project will train a diverse group of Israeli female early childhood educators to use Rosh Pina’s methodology and educational approach that values cultural differences and civic engagement. Yaacov Herzog Center: Midreshet Roni - A new Tzahali Program Grant Amount: $10,000 Midreshet Roni is an institute of religious study designed to prepare observant young Jewish Israeli women for successful army service through Jewish learning, leadership and personal development workshops, community involvement, and support throughout their time in the IDF. Health & Well-Being for Women & Girls No Shame On U: General Operating Support Renewal Grant Amount $15,000 No Shame On U is committed to eliminating the stigma associated with mental health conditions and raising awareness for mental health in the Jewish and wider communities. Its multi-pronged approach includes outreach programs, presentations, classes, online resources, and workshops. No Shame On U partners with mental health organizations and Jewish institutions to respond to the needs of the community. Tahel – Crisis Center for Religious Women and Children: Digital Infrastructure for Victim Support Services Grant Amount: $15,000 Tahel will receive a capacity building grant for a customized database, including the infrastructure creation, staff training, and implementation. The database will enable more in-depth tracking of its cases, allow Tahel to provide more sophisticated interventions, and streamline its services and data. The Eden Center: General Operating Support Grant Amount: $25,000 The Eden Center makes the mikveh experience relevant to the lives of women across Israel and the diaspora; connects women to medical resources within the Jewish community; and seeks to advance tolerance, mutual responsibility, and inclusiveness at the mikveh.
