RUDDOCK 0200945 PHD ANTHROPOLOGY 1 ABSTRACT This thesis is an anthropological study of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), with a primary focus on undergraduate, or MBBS, education. Established in 1956, AIIMS is an enormous government-funded hospital, anomalous in the public healthcare landscape for employing many of India’s most respected doctors, who consistently provide a high standard of free or low- cost care to patients of low socioeconomic status. It also occupies an unassailable position atop the hierarchy of Indian medical education. AIIMS is a postcolonial institution, with origins in a colonial proposition, informed by global expertise, and realized with the support of international donors. Despite its profile, AIIMS has received little attention from social scientists. The same is true of medical education in India more broadly. Attending to these lacunae, I position my thesis in relation to literatures on hospital ethnography, and the training of health professionals in the Global South, as well as attending to other determinants of students’ experiences, including the dynamics of reservation-based difference, and their conceptions and experiences of aspiration and attainment. My analysis proceeds from an understanding of the All India Institute as simultaneously insulated from, permeated by, and complicit in the sociomedical landscape beyond its gates. Maintaining this perspective through a series of ethnographic chapters, I interrogate what is contained within the description of AIIMS and its students as ‘the best’. How is ‘the best’ defined and experienced? How does it inform articulations of aspiration and excellence, at global, national, and individual levels? Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. Today it stands as a memorial to Gandhiji’s life and teachings. _______ The most distinguished address in a quiet locality of Gamdevi in Mumbai is the historic building, Mani Bhavan - the house where Gandhiji stayed whenever he was in Mumbai from 1917 to 1934. Mani Bhavan belonged to Gandhiji’s friend Revashankar Jhaveri who was a jeweller by profession and elder brother of Dr Pranjivandas Mehta - Gandhiji’s friend from his student days in England. Gandhiji and Revashankarbhai shared the ideology of non-violence, truth and satyagraha and this was the bond of their empathetic friendship. Gandhiji respected Revashankarbhai as his elder brother as a result the latter was ever too happy to Volume 1 : Issue 07, November 2020 1 : Issue 07, November Volume host him at his house. APARAJITH RAMNATH Chennai, India 30 July 2012 2 ABSTRACT This thesis offers a collective portrait of an important group of scientific and technical practitioners in India from 1900 to 1947: professional engineers. It focuses on engineers working in three key sectors: public works, railways and private industry. Based on a range of little-used sources, it charts the evolution of the profession in terms of the composition, training, employment patterns and work culture of its members. The thesis argues that changes in the profession were both caused by and contributed to two important, contested transformations in interwar Indian society: the growth of large-scale private industry (industrialisation), and the increasing proportion of ‘native’ Indians in government services and private firms (Indianisation). Engineers in the public works and railways played a crucial role as officers of the colonial state, as revealed by debates on Indianisation in these sectors. Engineers also enabled the emergence of large industrial enterprises, which in turn impacted the profession. Previously dominated by expatriate government engineers, the profession expanded, was considerably Indianised, and diversified to include industrial experts. Whereas the profession was initially oriented towards the imperial metropolis, a nascent Indian identity emerged in the interwar period.

Differences in the characters of this class of agents, shaped by their origins and their mutual interaction with actual industrialisation processes, however, characterise different stories of capitalist development. This paper explores this theme in relation to Indian capitalism – examining how the colonial origins of the Indian industrial capitalist class imparted to it a specific character and the limited extent to which that legacy could be overcome by the subsequent relatively restricted industrialisation process. The case of the Reliance group is used to fortify and illustrate the argument.     The Marxist, XXVI 4, October–December 2010 IRFAN HABIB Note Towards a Marxist Perception of Indian History In this Note, an attempt is first made to present to an audience well- versed in Marxist theory the main problems that have arisen during the development of Marxist historiography from Marx’s time onwards. The second part is concerned with the major findings of Marxist work done on Indian history so far, as well as with the problems that are being debated. In the third part four major historical themes are identified where further work may be greatly helpful to the pursuit of the policies and goals of the Party. MAJOR FORMULATIONS OF MARXIST HISTORIOGRAPHY For those who joined the Communist movement in 1940’s or 1950’s or even later, the major introduction to the main principles of Marxist historiography was usually obtained from J.V. Stalin’s essay, ‘Dialectical and Historical Materialism’, written in September 1938 for the History of CPSU (B), Short Course, and reprinted in the various editions of his Problems of Leninism. While this essay with its rich selection of quotations and logical organization summed up the essence of Marxist THE MARXIST world-outlook, yet because it was, after all, a summary, it tended to overlook many complexities, variations and nuances. This was especially true of its treatment of the historical part and especially of ‘modes of production’. It is, therefore, desirable to devote some space to how Marx’s own views on History were developed and enriched from the 1840’s onwards.     SYLVIA HOUGHTELING THE EMPEROR’S HUMBLER CLOTHES Textures of Courtly Dress in Seventeenth- century South Asia Abstract This study reconstructs the humbler components of South Asian courtly ensembles worn by the greatest Mughal emperors, which included relatively inexpensive tie-dyed cloths made in Rajasthan and finely spun cotton muslins from Bengal. Court biographies, popular lexicons, and the letters sent from the Mughal court to its Rajput allies reveal that the fabrics used for dress in early modern South Asia were valued for sensory qualities, such as softness, saturation of color, and coolness on the skin, that went beyond the cost of the materials or the sophistication of the technology used to produce them. This project transports the study of dress in early modern South Asia beyond its current focus on the material wealth of imperial costumes to recover the sensory experience of wearing airy cotton and velvety wool, as well as the sophisticated intellectual, poetic, and political messages that could be carried in the fabric of a courtly coat. In his 1641 autobiography, the Jain merchant Banarasidas described the ways in which the tex- ture of life changed in the north Indian city of Jaunpur following news of the death of Emperor Akbar in 1605. “The people, bereft of their emperor, felt orphaned and hopeless,” he wrote.1 The wealthy feared that chaos would descend; they buried their jewelry and sealed their doors.     ABSTRACT DECONSTRUCTING GLIMPSES OF WORLD HISTORY: AN ANALYSIS OF JAWAHARLAL NEHRU'S LETTERS TO HIS DAUGHTER by Michele L Langford This paper deconstructs Jawaharlal Nehru's extensive account of world history in the form of letters to his daughter, Indira. First published in 1934, Glimpses of World History remains an important resource in understanding the formative years of Nehru's perspective of world history and world politics. An analysis of Nehru's text contributes to growing field of scholarship concerned with the uses and approaches to world history. In addition, an analysis of influences on Nehru's construction of world history questions the traditional view that only British perspectives informed Nehru's ideas about the world. In conclusion, this paper suggests that Nehru's world history served as the premise to his key foreign policy initiative, nonalignment, once Nehru became prime minister of India in 1947.
