students to succeed. Approximately 500 students have been impacted across 11 programs. The activity will be carried out again in January 2004. This activity supports the students’ need to receive timely and relevant information and will provide Mohawk College with summary and planning data for identifying the needs of our students and establishing activities to enhance student success. Counsellors assisted the Co-ordinator of Student Success in meeting for a second time with the classes involved in this pilot project. In these sessions, students were provided with feedback regarding their “drop out proneness” and with information and encouragement to access support services relevant to their identified areas of concern. 3.32 The Counselling Department at the IAHS presented a series of Success Seminars during October: Learning to Learn, Time Management, Writing Exams and Coping with Exam Anxiety. The Counsellors will also be trying a new way to reach our busy students. Often attending a success seminar conflicts with their schedules and simply takes too much time. Because of this, the Counsellors will be offering a video series called “QUICK FLIX”. Students will be encouraged to bring a lunch and watch a quick, 15 minute video on a topic relevant to student life (for example: Concentration, Note Taking, Stress Management). [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services]

3.33 Return to School sessions continue to be offered on a regular basis at Fennell, Brantford and the IAHS. 3.35 Counsellors have again noted the large numbers and the gravity of personal issues that students are dealing with. These have included stress, self image, social phobia, anxiety and depression, trauma (both recent and historical), addictions and substance abuse, bereavement (pets, child, parents), relationships, parenting, lack of child care, child custody struggles, and residence concerns. Especially for students in the Human Services program areas, the

subject material in their courses frequently triggers unresolved personal issues (such as childhood abuse, incest, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive behaviours. Students have sought help in resolving financial aid issues. This year, there are more student without funding or minimal funding at the beginning of the school year due to delays in processing Ontario Student Assistance Program applications or in resolving appeals, or due to ineligibility for sufficient funding. Counsellors continue to work with Financial Aid Advisors to find solutions for individuals with serious financial need. Fortino’s gifts certificates and the Mohawk Students' Association Food Bank are frequently primary sources of relief while students wait for more comprehensive solutions. Students also presented to Counsellors with academic concerns, particularly test anxiety, writing exams and time management. Students are also questioning their choice of program and engaging in career and educational planning, as well as seeking assistance in withdrawing from their programs or dropping courses. Both current and prospective students are asking for assistance in choosing and applying for programs for both January and September 2004. [Submitted by Carolyn Gray, Vice President, Student and Community Services] 3.36 Counsellors have worked collaboratively with program faculty and Chairs. For example, (1) assisting in the resolution of a placement-related issue in such a way that has supported the student’s learning, personal growth and continuation in the program, and (2) exploring ways that a program might be supportive of a student in crisis who has not been meeting the demands and deadlines of the program. 4.1The Steeltown Friends of Mohawk held a highly successful fundraising concert on October 27th. It was a wonderful evening and the buzz between the musicians and audience was highly evident. It was a great evening and a spectacle that sponsors and general audience obviously enjoyed. There is more good work to do and the success of this show will be used as a footprint for future endeavours. The arrangements, performers and staging were world class. There was a group of terrific students who volunteered and assisted with the event whose enthusiasm was catching. The organizers are grateful for the doors that have been opened between the organizing committee, the Administration, the Faculty, the students and College staff.
