Trinidad- Æ1 Barque; 344t.; 18241845 Description: Barque, class Æ1. Tonnage: 344 tons / 345 tons o.m. Built: Greenock, 1824. Materials: Dimensions: 103 x 27 Repairs: NW. 37; YM. 41; ND.TSds. Surgeon Supt(s): Dr Alex Russell (1841). Fate: Wrecked, 1845.

The 345 ton barque Trinidad departed Glasgow (Greenoch) 22 July 1841, arriving in Sydney 6 November 1841. There had been 3 births and four deaths during the voyage of 108 days, the main diseases encountered being diahorrea and inflammation of the bowels, rheumatism and pneumonia, with some constipation and spasmodic colic. A routine of early rising, regular hours, regular washing of the person, fumigation and being on deck as much as possible was maintained to assist the health and demeanour of the passengers, though the Surgeon-Superintendent noted that more punishment for minor offences could have improved respect and reduced carelessness. Divine service was conducted thirteen times during the voyage, the school was attended by 32 children and three adults, and dancing and singing helped the passengers pass the time.

On board were 36-year old farm servant George Bailey, his 33-year old (32 in her application) house servant wife Jane Armstrong and their family, Margaret (10), William (9), Eliza Jane (7), John (5) and Aiken (3). 20-year old Bridget ONeill (Biddy) was in their care. George Bailey, from Clogher TYR, was the son of John a farmer and Jane his wife; Jane Armstrong, from Belfast ANT, was the daughter of William a farmer and Elizabeth his wife. George and Jane were both able to read and write; both were Protestants. Biddy was able to read; she was Roman Catholic. Before disembarking, George secured three months employment with D L Irving on the Shoalhaven at a rate of 24 per annum plus rations. Another passenger was 28-year old farm servant Owen Macanally, a Roman Catholic from ?Trout TYR. He had embarked with his 29-year old wife and their children Rosa (4) and John (1); his wife died on pneumonia after reaching Sydney but before disembarking. Owen was able to read and write and was a Roman Catholic; he was the son of Miles and Mary (both living). Before disembarking, Owen secured six months employment with D L Irving on the Shoalhaven with the same conditions as George Bailey. George and Owen were the only immigrants from the Trinidad hired by Irving.

There was also 24-year old farm-labourer John Beattie, his 22-year old

Johns parents John and Elizabeth were both deceased, Jeans mother Mary was still living but her father Robin was deceased. John found employment after disembarking. Disembarkation of the 164 immigrants and passengers was completed by 21 November, and the Trinidad sailed on 19 December 1841 for Singapore with ballast; with Master James Brown, Surgeon Dr Alex Russell.

1860 Saturday 20 October The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW : 1843-1893) DISTRICT NEWS. MUDGEE. (From the Western Post, Oct. 13.) STATE OF THE ROADS.--The following extract will give intending visitora to Sydney an idea of the state of the roads :-- We started from Mudgee in high spirits at the prospect of having a fine journey. The road to Cudgegong Corner, and from there to McCully's (about a couple of miles this side of Cherry Tree Hill) was first-rate; from McCully's to the foot of Cherry Tree the road began to be bad - the hill itself is fright- ful ; it is quite wonderful how heavily laden teams travel over it with so few accidents ; from the hill to Layton's, a distance of about three miles, is nothing but one immense bog; from here to Hartley matters improved; the only thing worth noticing was, that the navvies were laying down stones and working on parts of the road that needed nothing doing to them. The mountain roads are beyond description ; in fact, no one that has not travelled over them lately can credit the frightful state they are in ; it ia difficult in some places for a horseman to travel ; goodness knows how the teams do. I saw broken drays all along the road, and others bogged in the mud and pipeclay so fast that two or three extra lots of horses could scarcely move them

Neighbour at Ilford/Cherry Tree Hill was Henry Lawson. It is thought this poem could be about Samuel's inn. It certainly describes the place as it was when we saw it in 1993

Cherry-Tree Inn by Henry Lawson

THE RAFTERS are open to sun, moon, and star, Thistles and nettles grow high in the bar– The chimneys are crumbling, the log fires are dead, And green mosses spring from the hearthstone instead. The voices are silent, the bustle and din, For the railroad hath ruined the Cherry-tree Inn.

Save the glimmer of stars, or the moons pallid streams, And the sounds of the possums that camp on the beams, The bar-room is dark and the stable is still, For the coach comes no more over Cherry-tree Hill. No riders push on through the darkness to win The rest and the comfort of Cherry-tree Inn.

I drift from my theme, for my memory strays To the carrying, digging, and bushranging days– Far back to the seasons that I love the best, When a stream of wild diggers rushed into the west, But the rushes grew feeble, and sluggish, and thin, Till scarcely a swagman passed Cherry-tree Inn.

Do you think, my old mate (if its thinking you be), Of the days when you tramped to the goldfields with me? Do you think of the day of our thirty-mile tramp, When never a fire could we light on the camp, And, weary and footsore and drenched to the skin, We tramped through the darkness to Cherry-tree Inn?

Then I had a sweetheart and you had a wife, And Johnny was more to his mother than life; But we solemnly swore, ere that evening was done, That wed never return till our fortunes were won. Next morning to harvests of folly and sin We tramped oer the ranges from Cherry-tree Inn.

. . . . .

Mcc170 mcc192 NSW between the wars-deaths death extract Interment.com Maureen Davies nee McCully, 34 Bellevue St, Fairlight, Sydney 1990 It is a sign of Mudgee's early success that the population increased to 1500 by 1861 and it was declared a municipality in 1860, making it the second- oldest town west of the Great Dividing Range. Methodist and Presbyterian churches, the present Catholic and Anglican churches and the first National school were all built in the 1850s. In addition a police station, courthouse, post office, mechanics institute, the present Uniting Church and a town hall were added from 1860 to 1865. There were four coach factories operating in the 1860s to cater for the overwhelming transport demands

Fortunately, Mudgee was not just dependent on gold. The immediate area became noted for its quality wool and merino studs, its vineyards (introduced by a German immigrant in the 1850s) and its agricultural production. When the gold began to peter out late in the 19th century it was the strength of these staples which sustained the town. When the railway arrived in 1884, it further boosted agricultural sales.

Before that "'Mudgee' reputedly derives from the Wiradjuri Aboriginal term 'Moothi' meaning 'nest in the hills'. This is a suitable title as Mudgee is an attractive town of fine old buildings, located in the broad, picturesque and fertile Cudgegong River Valley. Surrounded by hills of green and blue, it is situated km north-west of Sydney, 470 m above sea-level and has a current population of around 7500. The area is noted for its fine wool, beef, fat lambs, cereal crops, lucerne, vegetables, vineyards and honey. There is also a coal mine at Ulan, a large export abattoir, a livestock exchange and numerous horse, sheep and cattle studs.

The first European in the immediate vicinity was James Blackman who headed north to the Mudgee area from what is now Wallerawang in 1821, becoming the first European to cross the Cudgegong River. It is known that he had a slab building on the townsite by 1837.

Once Blackman proved the route passable William Lawson, who had failed in an earlier attempt, travelled north to Mudgee where he found some excellent grazing land. Lawson had been a member of the first European party to cross the Blue Mountains in 1813 and was then commandant of Bathurst. He later took up 6000 acres along the Cudgegong River.

He was immediately followed by George and Henry Cox (sons of William Cox who built the first road over the Blue Mountains) who became the first permanent European settlers on the Cudgegong River when they established the 'Menah' run, 3 km north-west of the present townsite. It was here that the first settlement developed. A police station and lock-up were established in 1833.

MCCULLY-539 (Continued) Prior to that time the district had been occupied by the Wiradjuri people. Relations were amicable when white numbers were negligible but, as settlement escalated in the 1820s, conflict increased. Kangaroos and possums, major food sources, were slaughtered wholesale by whites. Sacred sites were desecrated and prime riverside land was taken. In 1824 martial law was declared and armed settlers roamed the countryside murdering Aborigines on sight, thereby decimating the tribe which was dispossessed and completely broken by the 1840s. William Cox, who made a significant contribution to their extermination, claimed the last local black died in 1876.

The village of Mudgee was gazetted in 1838. By 1841 there were 36 dwellings, mostly of slab construction, including three hotels, a hospital, a post office, two stores and the first Anglican church. The first school (Anglican) was established in a slab hut in the 1840s and the police station was moved from Menah to Mudgee in the mid-1840s. The population had only reached about 200 by 1851.

However, a goldrush began when a huge nugget was found at Hargraves in 1851. Mudgee became a centre for the local goldfields, benefiting considerably from the consequent through-traffic which peaked with the finds at Gulgong and Hill End at the beginning of the 1870s
