The history of St Andrews is as varied as it is ancient.

Museum of the University of St Andrews J3 Founded in 1413, the University of St Andrews is Scotland’s oldest university and the third oldest university in the English-speaking world. On a sunny day if you haven’t already been to the beach, you must visit the West Sands – sandcastles, shells, dunes, picnics, paddling and swimming and it’s all free. For a different beach experience go via Leuchars to Tentsmuir for miles of sand and forest tracks for walking, cycling and horse riding.

Visit Craigtoun Country Park near St Andrews for a wide range of facilities including boating, miniature railway, children’s play area – open all year but facilities open April-September with admission charge.
