Summer Term Week 3: Week Commencing 4Th May 2020 Summer term Week 3: Week commencing 4th May 2020 Reading Task 1: Reading speed and questioning Please make sure you continue to read on Reading Plus. Everyone in the juniors should now have a login for Reading Plus. Please see the guide some of our Year 6 children made on our Reading Curriculum page if you are struggling to log on. Reading-Plus-Guide-for-Northcote-Parents Now that the weather is nice, make sure you are using some time to sit and read in the sunshine. Although we cannot go out to different places, reading is able to transport us to wherever our imagination takes us. Try to vary what you read. You may want to use this challenge from Everton Football club to help you: http://www.liverpoollearningpartnership.com/reading/everton-in-the- community-reading-bingo/ Task 2: Reading for pleasure. A big well done to everybody who drew and labelled characters from their book from last week’s task. This week, we would like you to draw the setting from a book that you have read this week and label it with descriptive words and phrases from the text. Writing Last week, we asked you to read an extract from 'Fing' by David Walliams and then design a 'Wanted' poster for your own unique creature. Take a look at some of the fantastic examples we received: This week, we will are going to continue studying David Walliams’ work by looking at his book, There’s a Snake in my School. Task 1: Listen to/read the opening extract of ‘There’s a Snake in my School’ by David Walliams Click on the link below and scroll down to listen to the audio clip from There’s a Snake in my School. https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/book/theres-a-snake-in-my-school/ Or you can listen to the full story here on by typing 'cbeebies bedtime story snake in my school' into the search box on Youtube with an adult! Now that you have listened to the extract, discuss the following questions with somebody at home: What do you predict will happen next? How would you feel if you were one of the children and you saw the snake? How would you react? How do you think the teachers feel when they see the snake? How do you think they would react? Task 2: Creating a pet for your own version of the story Imagine it was ‘Bring-Your-Pet-To-School-Day’ at our school and you were allowed to bring a pet of your choice to school! It can be any animal you like- the more unusual the better! Your now need to decide which pet you would bring to school and create a character profile for it. You can print the template off or type straight into it. Take a look at the WAGOLL below to help you: Pet-Character-Profile-WAGOLL Pet Character Profile Template Task 3: Planning and writing your own version of the story Now that you have thought about the pet you would bring to school, your next job is to plan and write your own version of the story including your pet from you character profile! Take a look at the WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) below to see what you need to include: Story WAGOLL You may also want to use the story planning template, story template and the word bank below to help you with the task: Planning template Story writing template Story word bank We would love to see your stories. Don’t forget to tweet your work to @NorthcoteSch or email it to [email protected] Maths: multiplication using the grid method This week, I would like you to practise multiplication using the grid method. See the example below: Method Draw your grid (see the example above) Split the two digit number into tens and units (write at the top of the grid) Write the one digit number under the x sign Multiply the numbers (write each answer into your grid) Add the answers TASK 1: Draw a grid to help you to answer the calculations below 1. 17 x 3 = 2. 26 x 5 = 3. 19 x 2 = 4. 23 x 4 = 5. 35 x 4 = 6. 42 x 4 = 7. 33 x 5 = 8. 38 x 3 = 9. 42 x 5 = 10. 34 x 4 = TASK 2: Roll a die twice to make a 2 digit number. Multiply it by 2, 3, 4 or 5 using the grid method. If you want to challenge yourself, try multiplying by 6 or 8! TASK 3: Answer the problem questions below: 1. A tin of mushy peas costs 17p. How much does it cost for 4 tins? 2. Cherry tomatoes weight 14g each. How much do 5 of them weigh? 3. Peaches come in packs of 4. How many peaches are there in 19 packs? 4. Which is more? 5 x 36 or 3 x 56 4. Which is more? 4 x 52 or 5 x 42 5. Which is more? 3 x 61 or 6 x 31 TASK 5: Multiply 13 by 4. Now multiply 26 by 4. Look at the two numbers. Can you explain what you notice? Repeat to find answers to 14 x 6 and 28 x 6 Answers from last week: TASK 1: 1. 657 – 231 = 426 2. 784 – 523 = 261 3. 781 – 123 = 658 4. 983 – 237 = 746 5. 652 – 137 = 515 6. 891 – 125 = 766 7. 568 – 173 = 395 8. 674 – 291 = 383 9. 561 – 280 = 281 10. 671 – 184 = 487 TASK 2: Subtraction problem Qs with answers TASK 3: correct or incorrect answers Science: Light This half term, our new Science topic is Light! • David Walliams
David Walliams David Walliams is a comedian, actor and children’s author. He is also a judge on a television talent show and writes scripts for television. David raises money for the charity Sport Relief, which helps people in the world’s poorest countries. Childhood David was born on 20th August 1971 in Merton, London. He was the youngest child of Peter Williams, an engineer, and Kathleen Williams, a lab technician. From a young age he enjoyed dressing up; his older sister Julie loved dressing him up in girls’ clothes. David went to a boys’ school in Surrey, where his love of dressing up continued and his love of acting was formed. He was also on the school swimming team. Although he never won a race, he loved the freedom of being in the water. Aged 11, he performed in his first school play wearing a dress and made the audience howl with laughter. This was the moment he realised what he wanted to do with his life. Career Highlights After studying drama at the University of Bristol, David changed his surname from Williams to Walliams because there was already an actor with that name. David finally got his “big break” collaborating with his friend on a comedy sketch show. The show was extremely popular and David’s name instantly became a household name. David had a successful television career but he decided to try out a new vocation. He wanted to write a book with the important message that it’s OK to be different. In 2008, he published ‘The Boy in the Dress’ about a boy who loves football and wearing dresses.

  • John Birt's Mactaggart Lecture 2005
John Birt's MacTaggart Lecture 2005 When Dawn unexpectedly invited me to give this 30th Anniversary lecture my immediate instinct quite honestly was to refuse - despite her formidable back-you-up-against-the-wall-you-can't-say-no-to-me powers of persuasion. My head is somewhere else now, I thought. Anyway, when the Bishop retires he should leave the Diocese. My presence will simply inflame old hostilities. But I forced myself to take a day or two to reflect. And I changed my mind. Truth to tell, I devoted the bulk of my life to this industry. I care about it deeply and passionately. And I stand before you tonight - one of the few MacTaggart lecturers ever to be eligible for a free bus pass - because I finally realised I really did want to talk to you - the people who drive and power this great industry - about a subject that increasingly sets me alight - the looming, intensifying threat to the UK's extraordinarily successful tradition of public service broadcasting. This will be my subject tonight. The health warning is that I speak purely in a personal capacity. Homecoming Now I'm here, I must say it is good to be back. I first immersed myself in this cauldron at its very inception, when there were only three television channels. And I've been here most years since, until I retired. The Festival was the brainchild of Gus Macdonald, a former shipyard activist and visionary. He and I had been joint editors of World in Action in our 20s - he still looking like a sinewy industrial worker, me with hair heading for my shoulders.
