Cincinnati, Ohio - The UIC men’s basketball team secured a third-place finish at the 2003 Dell BCA Classic on Monday night with a 75-64 victory over Mercer at Xavier University’s Cintas Center. The Flames (2-1) controlled the paint versus the Bears (1-2), who are the pre- season favorites in the Atlantic Sun Conference. UIC outrebounded Mercer 41-31 while outscoring the Bears 38-18 in the paint. Senior Cedrick Banks paced the Flames with his first double-double of the season, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Joe Scott had his best outing of the year, tallying 15 points and eight rebounds. Aaron Carr (12 points) and Armond Williams (10 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals) also reached double figures for UIC. The Flames owned a 37-27 lead at intermission, closing the first half on a 10- 0 run as senior Rickey Dominguez netted eight points during the surge. Mercer would claw back in the second half and eventually build a four point advantage, 51-47 with just under 12 minutes remaining. UIC still trailed by three, 54-51 at the 10:23 mark, but five straight points by Carr gave the Flames 55-54 lead they would never relinquish The Bears were led by Scott Emerson’s 22 points and seven rebounds.
