1. “Exercise INDRA - 2017: Indo-Russia Joint Exercise”
Exercise INDRA-2017, the first ever Tri Services Joint Exercise between Indian and Russian Armed Forces will be conducted in the Eastern Military District of Russia from 19 to 29 Oct 2017.
Exercise INDRA in its pre6vious nine avatars has been conducted as a single service exercise alternately between the two countries. The year 2017 marks a major milestone as this Exercise has been upgraded to involve all the three Services of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy & Air Force), which further accentuates the importance of Joint Services in the present world environment. Exercise INDRA-2017 will be conducted at the 249th Combined Army Range Sergeevisky and in the Sea of Japan near Vladivostok.
2. Defence Minister Sitharaman commissions INS Kiltan
Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman commissioned the indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS Kiltan at the Eastern Naval Command.
Kiltan is the latest indigenous warship after Shivalik class, Kolkata class and sister ships INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt to have joined the Indian Navy’s arsenal wherein a plethora
of weapons and sensors have been integrated to provide a Common Operational Picture (COP). It is India’s first major warship to have a superstructure of carbon fibre composite material resulting in improved stealth features, lower top weight and maintenance costs, it said. In the future, it would also be installed with short range SAM system and carry an integral ASW helicopter. This is the third of the four Kamorta-class corvettes being built under Project 28. The ship derives its name from one of the islands in Aminidivi group of the strategically located Lakshadweep and Minicoy group of islands.
3. Italian banks most exposed to ECB’s new bad loan proposal: S&P
Italian banks are the most exposed to new bad loan rules proposed by the European Central Bank and may lend less to companies in response to them, credit ratings agency Standard & Poor’s.
“We see Italian banks becoming increasingly less keen to lend to domestic corporations,” S&P said in a report looking at the ECB’s proposal that require bank to provision against loan losses at regular intervals.
4. SEBI revamps expert panel on Market Infrastructure Institutions
SEBI reorganised its committee on Market Infrastructure Institutions (MII) that advises it on reviewing norms related to stock exchanges, clearing corporations and depository participants.
The five member expert committee on MII is now chaired by R Gandhi, former Deputy Governor at Reserve Bank of India (RBI). One of the major responsibilities of this committee is overall assessment of the existing MIIs’ framework.
5. Mahindra launches 'Prerna' project for women farmers
Mahindra & Mahindra said it has launched a programme, Prerna, to empower women working in the agriculture sector by promoting efficient and ergonomic farm tools and equipment.
The project will be initially launched in the state of Odisha, with the intention to positively impact the lives of over 1,500 families across 30-plus villages. The company, which is part of the USD 19 billion Mahindra Group, yesterday celebrated the 'Mahila Kisan Diwas' with the launch of this programme.
6. Indian peacekeepers in Sudan awarded UN medal
As many as 50 Indian peacekeepers stationed in South Sudan have been awarded the UN Medal for their professionalism and service in protecting civilians and building durable peace in the conflict-ridden country.
The Indian peacekeepers are part of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The are deployed with the Indian Battalion stationed at Bor in the Jonglei region of South Sudan. They were presented with the award recently by UNMISS Force Commander General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi.
7. Prabha Varma chosen for Padma Prabha Puraskaram
A jury headed by ace novelist M Mukundan chose Varma for the prestigious Padma Prabha Puraskaram award, considering his contribution to Malayalam literature.
The award was instituted by Kalpetta-based Padma Prabha Memorial Trust in memory of M K Padmaprabha, a leading socialist and one of the founders of modern Wayanad. Varma is the winner of Kendriya Sahitya Academi, Kerala Sahitya Academi and Vayalar awards, Mahakavi Puraskaram, Mahakavi Pandalam Keralavarma Kavitha Puraskaram and Vallothol award, besides many other recognitions.
8. Swraj Paul honoured for contributions to manufacturing, education
Prominent NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul has been conferred with the Life Time Achievement Award here for his outstanding contributions in the fields of manufacturing industry, education and philanthropy.
The 2nd British Asian Achievers Awards, organised by Jagatwani, a Hindi weekly, was held at the Grosvenor Hotel in Lonon. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1983.
9. Gurmehar Kaur named Next Generation leader by Time magazine
Time Magazine has included Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur in its list of Next Generation Leaders for 2017.
Gurmehar, the only Indian in the list, is the daughter of an Indian Army captain who was martyred while fighting terrorists in the troubled region of Jammu and Kashmir.
10. Kavita Devi becomes first Indian woman wrestler to sign with WWE
Kavita Devi has made history by becoming the first ever woman wrestler from India to be awarded a WWE developmental contract.
Devi is an accomplished power-lifter who won gold at the 2016 South Asian Games, representing India The announcement was made by WWE Champion Jinder Mahal during his visit to the nation's capital. Devi also has the distinction of being the first Indian woman to compete in a WWE ring, during her participation in the Mae Young Classic.
