Projections estimate that worldwide, more than 125 million EVs will be on the road by 2030. At the heart of these advanced vehicles is the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery which provides the required energy storage. This paper presents and compares key components of Li-ion batteries and describes associated battery management systems, as well as approaches to improve the overall battery efficiency, capacity, and lifespan. Material and thermal characteristics are identified as critical to battery performance. The positive and negative electrode materials, electrolytes and the physical implementation of Li-ion batteries are discussed. In addition, current research on novel high energy density batteries is presented, as well as opportunities to repurpose and recycle the batteries. Introduction Electric vehicles (EVs) were first demonstrated in 1828 [1,2] with the first production electric car introduced in 1884 [3]. These EVs had clear advantages over the competing steam- and gasoline-powered vehicles, such as absence of the loud noise from an un-muffled internal combustion engine, and the difficult starting procedures that in early vehicles required the involvement of specialized staff that would initially heat those engines to operating temperature (the so-called “chauffeur”—i.e., “warmer”) [4]. The inventions of the internal combustion engine muffler is 1897 [5], the electric engine starter in 1911 [6], and the desire for larger vehicle autonomy and faster vehicle re-charging procedures all contributed to internal combustion engine powered vehicles eclipsing the use of EVs except in specialized uses. Lately, the desire to decrease the negative ramifications associated with the use of internal combustion engine powered transportation [7–9], and in particular the drive to decrease carbon emissions [10,11], has led to a significant resurgence in interest in electrified transportation. Of particular importance to enable electrified transportation is the availability of economically and technologically robust batteries. The Progression of Battery Technologies Used for EV Applications Many different kinds of batteries exist, and as new systems are developed to commercial maturity, they have been applied to the problem of electrified transportation. Therefore, conductors can dissipate static when properly grounded. Non-conductive materials, or insulators such as plastic and wood, have the opposite property as their electrons can not move freely to maintain balance.

    Reaction Engineering of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells A new approach to elucidate the operation and control of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells is being developed. A global reactor engineering approach is applied to PEM fuel cells to identify the essential physics that govern the dynamics in PEM fuel cells. Reaction engineering principles are employed to develop a one-dimensional differential PEM fuel cell suitable for elucidating the dynamic performance of PEM cells under well-defined conditions. Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells employ a polymer membrane with acid side groups to conduct protons from the anode to cathode. Water management in the fuel cell is critical for PEM fuel cell operation. Sufficient water must be absorbed into the membrane to ionize the acid groups; excess water can flood the cathode of the fuel cell diminishing fuel cell performance limiting the power output.     Session 1: Sources and Availability of Materials for Lithium Batteries Session 1 Sources and Availability of Materials for Lithium Batteries Adrian Griffin Managing Director, Lithium Australia NL ABSTRACT Lithium, as a feedstock for the battery industry, originates from two primary sources: hard-rock (generally spodumene and petalite), and brines. Brine processing results in the direct production of lithium chemicals, whereas the output from hard-rock production is tradeable mineral concentrates that require downstream processing prior to delivery, as refined chemicals, into the battery market. The processors of the concentrates, the 'converters', are the major constraint in a supply chain blessed with abundant mineral feed. The battery industry must overcome the constraints imposed by the converters, and this can be achieved through the application of the Sileach™ process, which produces lithium chemicals from concentrates direct, without the need for roasting. The cathode chemistries of the most efficient lithium batteries have a common thread – a high dependence on cobalt. Battery manufacturers consume around 40% of the current production of cobalt, a by-product of the nickel and copper industries. This means cobalt is at a tipping point – production will not keep up with demand. In the short term, the solution lies in developing alternative cathode compositions, while in the longer term recycling may be the answer. Lithium Australia NL is researching the application of its Sileach™ process to waste batteries to achieve a high-grade, low-cost source of battery materials and, in so doing, ease the supply constraints on cathode metals. To ensure that the battery industry is sustainable, better utilisation of mineral resources, more efficient processing technology, an active battery reprocessing capacity and less reliance on cobalt as a cathode material are all necessary.
