4 A Celebration 125 Years in the Making

It is our distinct honor and privilege to welcome you to this 125th anniversary celebration – an important milestone in the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine’s history.

We want thank you all for taking the time from your busy schedules (or retired life!) to join us for this occasion. It is so wonderful to be in the company of so many alumni, students, faculty, staff, longtime friends and colleagues.

The 125th celebration features a packed and varied program Kenneth Chance, DDS ’79 of events that includes continuing education courses, breakfasts, lunches, and a grand party to celebrate 125 years of educational excellence. We have a historic event with the deans - A Conversation with the Deans of the School of Dental Medicine. This event will showcase the school’s history during their time as dean. The Dittrick Museum of Medical History has recently opened an exhibit highlighting the dental profession and the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

The celebration marks the strong links between alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. The theme for our yearlong celebration is “125 Years of Excellence.” We kicked off the celebration last fall during Homecoming and Reunion. Then we held events in various cities to visit with alumni and bring the excitement to them. Now we’ve returned home to have the BIGGEST celebration the school has had to date – our Quasquicentennial Anniversary.

The celebration allows us to shine a bright light on the achievements and contributions made Donald P. Lewis, ’76, ‘80 by our students, faculty and alumni that have defined the CWRU SODM as a top-tier institution making a global impact. As we look back at our history, we know we cannot rest on our laurels. We must begin to move into our next 125 years with the vision that continues to propel us to the forefront, allowing our impact to reach the local community, the national community and the global community.

Many thanks to the Alumni Association Board of Directors for serving as the planning committee to determine the many events, speakers and activities to include recognition of extraordinary alumni. Special thanks to our Department of Development and Alumni Relations, who handled the logistics of this important celebration.

We thank the many sponsors who offered support for our anniversary and our students. You will find them listed throughout this book and we encourage you to support their businesses. Some of the local politicians wanted to mark this milestone celebration and their proclamations have been included.

Borrowing a phrase from Abraham Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg Address but applying it to our celebration: we have a program of the community, by the community, and for the community. Over this weekend you will come to understand and appreciate what we mean.

Let’s have a wonderful celebration!!!

THE SCHOOL

The School of Dental Medicine was organized on June 21, 1892, as the Dental Department of Western Reserve University, and opened that September with 21 students. For the first 25 years of its existence, the school was located in downtown Cleveland, on East Ninth Street and St. Clair.

In 1917, the School of Dental Medicine became an integral part of the university, with a building on Adelbert Road.

In 1969, it moved into a building adjacent to the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and University Hospitals of Cleveland as part of a large University expansion project. This move made it one of the most complete and modern educational and research units in the country, with space for 368 DDS students, 70 graduate students, and 250 patient chairs. In 2003, the name of the school officially changed from the School of Dentistry to the School of Dental Medicine, and the degree offered changed from Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) to Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Since its organization, it has conferred degrees on over 6,000 graduates and currently there are approximately 4,700 living alumni.
