Ryan, S.J. Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society Let me begin on holy ground, Ireland. In 1931 William Butler Yeats concluded his short poem, “Remorse for Intemperate Speech,” with a stanza that speaks to me as the person I am, for better or for worse: Out of Ireland have we come. Great hatred, little room, Maimed us at the start. I carry from my mother’s womb A fanatic heart. Ireland is, indeed, a small place, and it has seen great fanaticism and hatred, although the temperature of Ireland as a whole has subsided dramatically since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, despite Boris Johnson. The whole island of Ireland today occupies 32,599 square miles. British-administered Northern Ireland includes 5,340 of those square miles. Combined Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approximate the size of Indiana. The total population of the island of Ireland is 6.7 million people, about a half a million more than the population of Indiana. There is another place of “great hatred, little room” that I wish to discuss this evening: the Holy Land, made up today of the State of Israel and the Palestinian autonomous regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. -

Volume 2: From 1517 to the Second Vatican Council Chapter 10 NEW REFORMS AND NEW DIVISIONS: THE BIRTH OF THE CAPUCHINS AND REFORMS WITHIN THE OBSERVANCE The friars “of the Holy Gospel” The Order of Friars Minor of the Regular Observance, after the union of all the reformed families in 1517, became a powerful religious family dedicated mainly to apostolic missions. A minority of friars, however, continued to insist upon living a simpler Franciscan life in the hermitages. Besides the Amadeiti and Coletani, there were other congregations which preferred eremitical life, like the Clareni and the friars “of the Holy Gospel” or Capuciati. This last religious family was one which the Bulla Ite vos of Leo X (1517) had not managed to integrate within the Order of the Friars Minor of the Regular Observance. They were born, as we have already seen, with the initiative of Juan de la Puebla, who had made an experience of Franciscan life in the Umbrian hermitages of central Italy, and then had returned to Spain, founding a congregation of friars who lived the literal observance of the Rule in the hermitages. Among his followers there was Juan de Guadalupe, who in 1508 obtained the approval of the Province “of the Holy Gospel”.1 The negative reaction of the Spanish Observants, who persecuted the new religious family, compelled the brothers of the Custody of Estremadura to place themselves under the obedience of the Conventuals in 1515, and thus became to be known by the name of “Reformed Conventuals”.2 They wore a short tunic with a pyramidal hood, and hence also the name Capuciati. -
Through the Manuscripts of Some Christian Missionaries
j OURNAL OF IsLAı'vlICJE RUSALEM STIJD!ES (SUMMER 2011) THE MODERN IMAGE OF THE HOLY LAND: THROUGH THE MANUSCRIPTS OF SOME CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES PAOLO MAGGIOLINI Luspio University, Roma This article aims to analyse the modern iınage of the Holy Land as it emerges from tbe accounts of several missionaries who visited this territory during the 19th century. The article will specifıcally examine tbe biography of William Lethaby (1910), who, with his wife, was affiliated with The Wesleyan Metbodists, and the manuscripts of Father Jausseo (1908, 1927), a Catholic missionary from France. The experiences of these people, crystallised in the historical texts that portray their lives, teli us about the encounter between two different cultural wotlds. The missionaries or travellers iınmersed tbemselves in the local field, took possessioo of it and rebuilt it according to their personal cultural sensibility, making it accessible to a wider Western audience. Thanks to this very act of force based on the written word, they reconstructed the iınage of the Holy Land, of its heart, Jerusalem, of its inhabitants and of the rights of the three monotheistic religions. They rewrote the local history and suggested the future of this land. The Holy Land and Jerusalem do not exist per se, but they are constructed according to the personal peı:ception of these people through the conviction of their moral and cultural superiority. Firstly, regarding the view of the Holy Land by Orientalists, the analysis of these sources gives an insight into the historical meaning and scope of the cultural acquisition process of the Holy Land and Jerusalem by the West. -

Chapter 4 St Francis and the Holy Land in the Fifteenth Century From around the turn of the sixteenth century onwards, when the Francis- cans had been established in the Holy Land for almost two hundred years, they began to articulate increasingly sophisticated ideas about their own role within this region. Not only did the (by this time) Observant friars come to view receiving and conducting all Western European pilgrims as their preroga- tive, as was discussed in the previous chapter, but they also began to claim the Holy Land as an essentially Observant Franciscan territory (see chapter five). In order to substantiate this claim to the Holy Land, the friars looked to the past. By constructing their own particular narrative of the history of the Holy Land, they were able to create a cultural memory to support their identity as divinely appointed keepers and possessors of (or even heirs to) the Holy Land. By studying and reinterpreting the past they aimed to give substance to their ideological relationship with the Holy Land. This chapter examines the first, late fifteenth-century, example of a text by an Observant Franciscan that analyses the past in order to point out the present significance of the custodia Terrae Sanctae: book vii of friar Paul Wal- ther von Guglingen’s Treatise on the Holy Land. Book vii is firmly grounded in the then existing tradition at the Franciscan convent in Jerusalem of com- piling manuscripts with historical texts relating to the Holy Land. Nonethe- less, Guglingen’s text is also innovative. It synthesizes a new and coherent history of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, based on the sources present in the convent library in Jerusalem, something that had not previously been at- tempted by a friar of the Franciscan custody of the Holy Land. -

CUSTODY OF THE HOLY LAND Order of Friars Minor Report Summary 2010/2011 The Custody of the Holy Land tirelessly continues its mission, begun several centuries ago, to conserve and protect the holy places in the Land of Jesus. This includes celebrating the liturgy, assisting Pilgrims, and carrying out multiple apostolic works, especially for the benefit of the Christian communities. In the year 2010/2011, particular attention has been paid to the planning and execution of projects in the following areas: HOLY PLACES I) PILGRIMS 1. Bethlehem • Parish Church of St. Catherine ¾ Completion of work on the lighting system inside the Church of St. Catherine. 2. Jerusalem • Convent of St. Saviour ¾ Renovation of the “Studio Teologico” and restoration of the Convent of St. Saviour. ¾ Work started on the Custodial Library. ¾ Magnificat – School of Music: renovation of bathrooms and entrance stairway. ¾ Renovation of bathrooms in the Sisters’ Convent. • Sanctuary of Dominus Flevit ¾ Completion of restructuring at the Convent of Dominus Flevit, including the sanctuary, gardens and areas reserved for the reception of pilgrims. • Gethsemane ¾ Initial procurement needed for reconstruction of the exterior stone wall, supplies for and installation of steel fence, as required by the Environmental Authorities of Israel. ¾ Beginning restoration and maintenance of the roof of the Basilica of Gethsemane, in order to prevent water seepage. • Sanctuary of the Flagellation Studium Biblicum Francescanum 1 ¾ Concluding restoration of the “Hall of Crusaders” at the Convent of the Flagellation. ¾ Completing the Library expansion of the Studium Biblicum Francescanum. The project includes the installation of an elevator for greater accessibility to the premises, as well as renovation of mobile and fixed shelving. -

N. 180312d Monday 12.03.2018 Appeal for the Collection for Christians in the Holy Land Letter of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches The “pro Terra Sancta” Collection Summary Report of the Custody of the Holy Land on projects and works enabled by the Collection 2016/2017 14 February 2018 Ash Wednesday Your Excellency, The Lenten Season, which we are living once again, invites us to go to Jerusalem through the way of the Cross upon which the Son of God accomplished his redemptive mission. On this pilgrimage the Holy Spirit who reveals to us the meaning of the Word of God accompanies us. Besides the Sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we are strengthened by prayer and almsgiving. It is the right time to get closer to Christ by recognizing our poverty and our sins and live the same emptiness and humility of the Son of God who "he became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich" (2 Cor. 8,9). It is also an exceptional time to reach out to the others through the works of charity. Knowing that the Lenten journey is not a solitary act, but an itinerary of solidarity by which each one of us is called to pause and like the Good Samaritan accompany our brethren who for many reasons find it difficult to stand up and continue their journey. Also this year, the traditional "Collection for the Holy Land" held on Good Friday, is a proper occasion for the faithful to be one with our brethren in the Holy Land and the Middle East. -

All is past and gone, all has failed... and the austere weather which succeeds, though ungrateful to the body, is in tone with our feelings, and acceptable. Thus the soul is cast forward upon the future... and does it rejoice that there are new heavens and a new earth to come. These are feelings of holy men waiting earnestly for the Advent of Christ.” Through Mary and Joseph, the Shepherds and Magi, the human race for the first time saw God face to face. In earliest days “Advent” marked that “Coming” of Christ – Christmas Day. In time, the scope of the mystery was broadened to include a preparation for his Christmas Coming and his “Final Coming” on Judgment Day. There is no better way to prepare for these mysteries than by celebrating what is so central to our Faith, his sacramental Coming in the Eucharist – for which we should prepare as well. Through the Sacrament of Penance, may each of us entrust to the forgiving Christ “all that is past, all that is gone and all that has failed” as we earnestly await for the Advent of Christ and the new hope it brings this Christmas. Franciscans mark 600th year of pope establishing Commissaries of Holy Land WASHINGTON (CNS)(UPDATED) — Before he became guardian and commissary of the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington in 2013, Franciscan Father Larry Dunham made his first trip to the Holy Land, where his order has cared for the most sacred shrines of Christendom for centuries. The trip brought out the first fervor he felt when he became a priest, he told Catholic News Service Feb. 11. The Franciscans are the custodians of “the patrimony of our Church” and it was “deeply moving” to see firsthand “how incredible this work is,” said the 73-year-old friar. “Where Jesus was born, where Jesus walked, lived, did his ministry, suffered and died — this is the center of our faith and grounds us in our faith, the very foundations of our faith,” he added. Thinking about the people in the Holy Land as descendants of the first ones to have heard the word of God preached to them on the first Pentecost “gives me goose bumps,” he added. The work of the friars also “gives these people hope,” he said. The friars have never left them — despite violent clashes and political unrest that have plagued the region for time immemorial — and they continue to pour their lives out for them” with many good works. As one of the three monotheistic religions that call the Holy Land home, the Franciscans are also bridge-builders in a land of conflict.
