6 ACADEMIC REGALIA

The pageantry of commencement is a time-honored ritual dating back to ecclesiastical observances of the 12th and 13th centuries. Today’s academic raiment owes its origins to clerical garb designed to impart dignity to solemn, scholarly occasions.

The basis for the standardization of the various features of the American regalia was formed at a special intercollegiate conference held in 1895 at Columbia University. Three types of gowns are indicated by the code:

• Bachelor’s gowns have long, bell-shaped sleeves. • Master’s gowns have oblong sleeves which drape gracefully below the knees and are open at the wrist. • Doctoral gowns are faced with black velvet, with three bars of velvet across the bell-shaped sleeves.

Hoods worn by master’s and doctoral graduates are made of material identical to the gowns and are lined in the official academic color of the institution conferring the degree. Colored velvet or velveteen binds the hoods and indicates the department to which the degree pertains. The color of the tassel denotes the wearer’s field of academic specialization, except for the doctoral degree earner, who wears either gold or black.

CERTIFICATION OF GRADUATION

Commencement is not a certification of graduation but rather a ceremony that celebrates academic achievements. Participation in any commencement ceremony does not affirm that the graduate has satisfactorily completed all degree requirements. Degrees presented at Ferris State University commencement ceremonies are subject to satisfactory completion of specific requirements of individual degree programs of the colleges and university. Graduates must submit their online graduation applications by the established deadline or their names do not appear in the commencement program. In order to have the program completed in time for commence-ment, we must adhere to these deadlines. Graduates who miss the dead-line may ask their respective colleges’ commencement coordinators to place their names in the next commencement program.

Honors designations are based on the accumulated average earned during all enrollment periods except for Spring Semester 2021. Students graduating with honors wear gold honor cords.

COMMENCEMENT SYMBOLS

The Ferris State University Seal The Ferris State University seal represents founder Woodbridge N. Ferris’ educational philosophy, which has guided the university since 1884.

The torch symbolizes enlighten- ment—the light of truth and knowledge, the fire of inspiration challenging each student to excel.

Opportunity and industry are the underlying principles of this philosophy and provide the graduate with guidelines to follow throughout life. Opportunity is the chance for each individual to realize his or her greatest potential. Industry is the combination of the vital qualities of diligence, perseverance and discipline.

The Mace Bearer The office of Mace Bearer is ceremonial and is derived from medieval England, when an official taking office or opening court needed a bodyguard. In those times, the mace, a formidable weapon, was held ready to protect the person in charge. Since that time, however, it has become a symbol of office and is carried in the processional to dignify the ceremony.

A university representative known as the Mace Bearer carries the mace and leads in the presidential party. The mace is displayed on stage during the ceremony.

The university mace was created by staff of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program for use during formal university functions.

Ferris offers the best selection of technical and professional majors in Michigan. More than 190 educational programs, from associate to doctorate, are administered through seven academic colleges with schools and departments of specialized education.

The College of Arts, Sciences and Education—the largest college at Ferris —is the place to find specialized undergraduate and graduate degrees, and enriching minors in the behavioral, biological, physical or social sciences; humanities; education; English, literature and world languages and mathematics. Its faculty-student research collaboration, robust internships and study abroad opportunities extend learning beyond the classroom. Each department/school boasts faculty who are committed to providing innovative instruction and opportunities for hands-on, minds- on experiences that will help students be the best they can be. Students graduate with a foundation for entry-level professional careers, graduate school and life-long learning.

TheCollege of Business provides 30 distinctive academic programs that teach specialized skills in combination with business fundamentals designed to prepare graduates for a fast-paced and competitive workplace. A Leadership Advisory Board of presidents, CEOs and business leaders fuel the college’s response to changing needs of the business world. The college’s curriculum focuses on preparing its graduates for dealing with real issues as members and leaders of tomorrow’s workforce.

TheCollege of Engineering Technology is one of the largest in the nation. The college has world-class labs and state-of-the-art equipment, made possible by ongoing financial support from its industry partners. Some of Ferris’ technology programs are one-of-a-kind in Michigan and the nation.

TheCollege of Health Professions offers in-demand programs in a variety of specialty areas. All courses are taught by qualified, discipline- specific faculty in state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories so students are well-prepared for clinical and internship experiences and a career providing for the health and well-being of others.

The Michigan College of Optometry is a national leader in optometry curriculum and instruction and the only doctoral-level eye care professional program in the state of Michigan. MCO doctors and student interns deliver state-of-the-art eye care to thousands of patients in the region.

Graduates of the College of Pharmacy compose more than half of Michigan’s practicing pharmacists. Graduates can be found in every type of pharmacy practice and at every level of the pharmaceutical sciences, actively engaged in discovery, dissemination of knowledge and delivery of state-of-the-art patient care.

Kendall College of Art and Design, on the Grand Rapids campus, offers graduate and undergraduate fine arts degrees as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Art History.
