Available at: www.spa-rac.org Proceedings of the 1st Mediterranean Symposium on the Non-Indigenous Species FORWARD Dear Friends and Colleagues, Following the recommendations of: the Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Vegetation in the Mediterranean Sea (adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in 1999 and updated in 2012) the Action Plan for the Conservation of Coralligenous and other calcareous bio- concretions of Mediterranean ( adopted by the Contracting Parties to Barcelona Convention in 20018 and updated in 2016) the Action Plan for the conservation of habitats and species associated with seamounts, underwater caves and canyons, aphotic hard beds and chemo-synthetic phenomena in the Mediterranean Sea (Action Plan for Dark Habitats adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in 2013), and the Action Plan concerning Species Introduction and Invasive Species (Adopted by the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention in 2003 and updated in 2016) a series of scientific symposia, dedicated to these habitats and NIS, was initiated in 2000 by organising the first Mediterranean Symposium on Marine vegetation. These initiatives aimed essentially to take stock of the recently available scientific data and to promote the cooperation between specialists and key actors working in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean Symposia on Marine Key Habitats are an important output, not only of the UNEP/MAP Mid-Term Strategy for the period 2016-2021 (Decision IG.22/1)1, but also for MedKeyHabitats II Project2 “Mapping of marine Key habitats and assessing their vulnerability to fishing activities in the Mediterranean” financed by MAVA foundation under its Mediterranean Strategy. The "Mediterranean Symposia on Marine Key Habitats and NIS" will also provide an opportunity to discuss best practices in the monitoring of marine key habitats and non-indigenous species and provide elements to further improve the Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme of the Mediterranean Sea and Coast and related Assessment Criteria (IMAP), of the Ecosystem Approach (EcAp) in the Mediterranean. The organization of the "Mediterranean Symposia on Marine Key habitats and NIS" together back to back in Antalya from 14 to 18 January, is a joint collaboration among UNEP/MAP- SPA/RAC and the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, as follows : 6th Mediterranean Symposium on Marine vegetation (from 14 to 15 January 2018) 3rd Mediterranean Symposium on the Conservation of Coralligenous and other Calcareous Bio-Concretions (From 15 to 16 January 2018) 2nd Mediterranean Symposium on the Conservation of the Dark Habitats (17 January 2018) 1st Mediterranean Symposium on the Non-Indigenous Species (From 17 to18 January 2018) The Turkish Marine Research Foundation, TUDAV, as SPA/RAC partner will support the local organization of this event. This edition will also be a good opportunity to discuss new topics such as monitoring and definition of Good Environmental Status (GES) in the Mediterranean and so strengthen links between scientists and scientific institutions. Accepted 24 February, 2013 The fig ( Ficus carica L.) is widely distributed and represents a natural wealth and diversity in all Tunisia. Investigations in the field showed that ‘smyrna’ type, bearing one generation of figs, were predominant in the coast while ‘san pedro’ type, bearing two generations of fruits, is more encountered in the continent. A large array of caprifig trees were counted in coastal ‘Bekalta’, while caprifigs are rare in ‘Djebba’ and are mostly found in wild form. Biodiversity of fig species was corroborated by analysis of the fruit. A wide range of size, shape (round, oblate and oblong) and colour (yellow green, purple green and purple black) was observed in the two areas. Fruits originated from continental zone were larger (59 mm) and heavier (82 g), while fruits from coastal zone were sweetener (18.4%) and tasteful. Comparison of cultivar ‘Zidi’ growing in the two contrasting areas revealed a gain of precocity in fruit ripeness in the coast. However, ‘Zidi’ figs picked from continental ‘Djebba’ were larger, heavier and sweetener than those picked from ‘Bekalta’.

Fish samples were collected by bottom trawl. A total of 29 hauls were carried out, 15 hauls between 43 to 121 m depth in the north-eastern Levantine Sea and 14 hauls between 65 to 100 m depth in 2 the north-eastern Aegean Sea. The total trawled area for both region was 1.87 km . Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling were applied to identify hauls grouping. Among 114 fish species found, 84 were recorded in the north-eastern Levantine Sea and 64 in the north-eastern Aegean Sea. Fifty species were found exclusively from the north- eastern Levantine Sea, 30 species exclusively from the north-eastern Aegean Sea and 34 species were shared by the two areas. The Lessepsian migrants, Upeneus moluccensis, Equulites klunzingeri, Saurida undosquamis, and the indigenous species Pagellus erythrinus were the most common species of fish assemblage in the north-eastern Levantine Sea.

Their phylogenetic and biogeographic relationships are, however, still poorly known. New molecular evidence is presented from a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 gene (cox1) that improves our understanding of the phylogeny of the group. Based on these data a preliminary discussion of the present distribution of sea hares in a biogeographic context is put forward. Our findings are consistent with only some aspects of the current taxonomy and nomenclatural changes are proposed. The first, is the use of a rank free classification for the different Aplysia clades and subclades as opposed to previously used genus and subgenus affiliations.
