The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy. -

They were lost in the great pile of sheets for those two issues (and a special edition yet to come—something really different for Kteic!), so they are included right after this. I was showing pages from FUTUREWORLD and where I had Tuckerized, etc. Then I received an autographed copy of L'AMBASSADEURS DES OMBRES, the latest French color comic (he) by J.C.Mezieres et P. Christin. Mezieres is a friend og Philippe Hupp, who was here in LA just before the MidAmeriCon. He not only sent me a copy but added a huge full-page drawing! That, too, is introduced somewhere herein. (Thank you, Philippe! And thank you, J.C.! Merci!) I love Valerian. If you others are not familiar, you should check him out. The drawing is the BEST and the stories cinematic as hell, in that I can "read" them without knowing French. -

George Orwell’s 1984 (1949) is considered a landmark of the dystopian genre by portraying a futuristic London ruled by a totalitarian, fascist party whose main aim is the complete control over its citizens. This paper will analyze two examples of contemporary dystopian literature, Philip K. Dick’s “Faith of Our Fathers” (1967) and Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta (1982-1985), to see the influence that Orwell’s dystopia played in their construction. It will focus on how these two works took Orwell’s depiction of a totalitarian state and the different methods of control it employs to keep citizens under complete control and submission, and how they apply them into their stories. Introduction Who else writes like …? seeks to help anyone who enjoys reading fiction to expand the number of writers that they read. It is designed to address the dilemma one faces when, having exhausted the output from a particular author, one ponders – “What shall I read next?” The book lists over 1,800 authors, and with each name suggests others who write in a similar way. The number of alternative authors listed for each entry is between three and twelve. Alternative ways of finding suitable reading are through the index of genres, or the list of prize winners at the back of the book. There is also an index to characters in fiction as well as a list of further reading, which includes some useful websites and other fiction guides. The entry for each author offers copious detail to help make a choice. The basis for the initial selection of authors continues to be the most popular according to the Public Lending Right lists, with additions suggested by a number of professional librarians from England, Scotland and Wales. In the main, authors are only included when they have three books to their name and when their novels are easily obtainable from bookshops and libraries. Inclusion is therefore determined by a mixture of objective and subjective criteria. Inevitably some cherished favourites may be omitted as a result, and for this we are sorry. This is the fourth edition of what has now become an established tool for readers and those advising readers in their quest to derive the utmost pleasure from fiction. -

Denning The Profession of IT An Interview with David Brin on Resiliency Many risks of catastrophic failures of critical infrastructures can be significantly reduced by relatively simple measures to increase resiliency. ANY PEOPLE TODAY are concerned about critical infrastructures such as the electrical network, wa- ter supplies, telephones, Mtransportation, and the Internet. These nerve and bloodlines for society depend on reliable computing, communications, and electrical supply. What would happen if a massive cyber attack or an electromag- netic pulse, or other failure mode took down the electric grid in a way that re- quires many months or even years for re- pair? What about a natural disaster such as hurricane, wildfire, or earthquake that disabled all cellphone communications for an extended period? David Brin, physicist and author, has been worrying about these issues for a long time and consults regularly with companies and federal agen- cies. He says there are many relatively straightforward measures that might greatly increase our resiliency—our ability to bounce back from disaster. I spoke with him about this.
