In the past there has only been one trophy presented for the Cadet of the Year Award which had been organised regionally to be given out at each division. This year the area committee was asked if three more trophies could be awarded so that the level of achievement, effort and results that this division has had this year could be recognised. Assigning trophies proved to be a difficult task, however, due to the high calibre of cadets in the REBRAND local division. Leaders convened and put a list of cadets forward for receiving each trophy, outlining why they thought that cadet deserved the honour of receiving an award. This list was forwarded to the Area Youth Managers at head office to make the final decision. The following awards were issued: MOST DEDICATED CADET This award was for the person who always puts themselves forward. Someone who mentors others to achieve, is positive, supportive, encourages STOCK others and is a genuine team player. This year it was given to Braydon Phillips. ‘‘Braydon has really stepped up this year. CFP WAIKATO sevens star Mark Murray (left) pictured playing for Te Awamutu Sports.

Te Awamutu’s Mark Murray was a standout player for Waikato at the national sevens tourna- ment in Queenstown. The defending champions started promisingly enough beating Otago first up but were beaten by last year’s runners-up Bay of Plenty and eventually ended up losing to North Harbour in the plate final. Murray excelled with his strength carrying the ball up and off loading in the tackle. He was particularly effective when given space out wide in the backs, rather than playing in the unacustomed role of a forward. Auckland stormed home to beat Taranaki 36-26 in the final to claim a 10th national sevens rugby championship. Earlier at the Bay of Plenty provincial tourna- ment at Mount Maunganui, Murray sparked a Waikato comeback in the final against the host union after they had trailed by over 20 unanswered points. They closed to within a couple of points, only to concede late tries and the game 47-26. Ryan Meacheam injured a leg playing for Waikato at the Mount and was ruled out of the national tournament. Youth shine in NZ Maori golf

Twelve year-old Herewini Hohepa came through his debut in senior men’s ranks at the national tournament with flying colours. The 8.8 handicapper produced back-to-back rounds of 74 to make the top 16 as 14th qualifier on 148 enroute to winning the senior men’s division one (second 16) net with a two round total of 131. The net was played in conjunction with the first two rounds of matchplay. Two years ago at Christchurch, Hohepa won the junior strokeplay. Te Heketanga Haumaha (17) took out the intermediate men’s division two match play title with a string of impressive wins. Haumaha won the national junior match play title at Christchurch. Congratulations to ASB Te Awamutu Golf Club president Bill Hawira and his team for the superb organisation of the New Zealand Maori tourna- ment conducted and shared in conjunction with the Stewart Alexander Club. Both clubs spared no effort to ensure a smooth running event for competitors from far and wide, who in turn were loud in their praise for all the arrangements made. The standard of golf for both the men and women’s finals ( all youngsters) was of the highest quality, most entertaining, and deserving of a much bigger gallery. Scoring was of a high standard on the club scene at ASB Te Awamutu Golf Club at the weekend. The Saturday ladies’ leading scorers were Jane Stokes with 45 stableford, Mary Strack 40 and June Gillespie 39. The only two was scored by Sylvia Gooch. Alma Goodwin upstaged the men in Sunday’s scramble, winning with 41 stableford, from Robert Coleman 38, Vic Roberts, Ani Bahler, Lew Cox 37, and S. Gooch, Bryce McDougall and Tim Young 36. 16 TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2011 TE AWAMUTU COURIER, THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2011 17 Mighty Maxwell NZ minisprint champion Rapid Cambridge racer breaks through for maiden major title

A new name has been added to the record books after a hard fought New Zealand minisprint championship at McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedway. Thirty-year-old 26H Dayne Maxwell of Cambridge walked away with his first major title after putting in the performance of his life on Sunday. Greg Maxted reports that Maxwell was consistent throughout the three heats, back- ing up a third in the open heat with two seconds in the remaining heats. Normally such a performance would have been good enough to seal outright victory but a win in the final heat for teenager 82P Jamie Larsen had the pair tied on 68 points. This meant a runoff was required to find the new New Zealand Champion, a rela- tively rare occurrence in Speedway but a rather familiar sight when it comes to New Zealand titles at Kihikihi. Maxwell took charge in the runoff, using the outside line to good affect to lead Larsen home. Like all good championships, there was a tinge of drama to the day’s proceedings with protests a plenty surrounding the third overall placing. Daniel Hartigan (10R) has provisionally been awarded third place overall but there were still appeals to be heard at the time of going to press. It was a day to forget for the current 2NZ Daniel Thomas whose engine let him down in the second heat. Fellow Hamiltonian and regular pace setter 3NZH Shaun Cooke also looked to be experiencing mechanical problems in the final heat which hampered his pace. McDonald’s Kihikihi Speedway will be back in action on Sunday, January 30 with 50 ministocks from throughout the North Island expected to contest the annual Youth Ministock Stampede. A big crowd is expected to turn out for JEREMY WARD www.shot360.co.nz this popular event.
