2016 Annual Report 614-297-0533 • [email protected] 677 E. 11th Avenue • Columbus, OH 43211 LETTER FROM THE 2016 BOARD PRESIDENT AND CURRENT BOARD PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Growth. Some things we like to see grow and others we do not. Sadly, food insecurity in our community is growing and on the move. Two years ago we moved to a new space in South Linden, a community that deals continually with food insecurity. Visits, families served, and food distributed through NNEMAP Food Pantry continue to grow, and those figures will increase in years coming. To better meet that growing need, in 2016 the Board engaged in a strategic assessment of what we do, our ser- vice territory, and our readiness and ability to reach further. Our Mission and Vision describe these things. They embrace our role and potential for increasing our reach and our effectiveness in addressing food insecurity. Growth requires resources. Our operating budget has grown nearly 70% compared with two years ago, and is now over $1,000,000 annually, the majority of which accounts for donated and distributed food. The per- centage of expenditure on food remains relatively constant – an ongoing imperative. Meeting the community’s needs, though, requires different approaches that require investment. We are truly blessed to have dedicated, experienced professionals directing the operation. They do a great job. The board is pleased to have adopted a program to support additional staff and overall payroll costs to support their work more effectively. Our staff earn every penny, and we thank them sincerely. Finally, NNEMAP Food Pantry could not function, nor would it have the same spirit of generosity, caring and nurture, without our many volunteers and supporting churches. To them, we say thank you for your partner- ship and your commitment. Yours respectfully, Samuel Moore Anne Nelson Board President 2017 Board President 2016 Our Mission: We help our neighbors enhance their lives, health and self-sufficiency through access to nutritious food and other resources. Our Vision: NNEMAP will be a leader in food access to create a Sam Moore (2017 Board President, Anne Nelson (2016 Board hunger free President), Roy Clark (Executive Director) community. Our Story - Our Future NNEMAP traces its beginnings to 1958 with the construction of the first I-670. This so disrupted the “Flytown” neighborhoods that the home values plummeted in nearby Victorian Village and what is now the Short North. By 1968, about a dozen churches were working together with the Godman Guild Association and created a food pantry for those experiencing food insecurity. That pantry was called the Near Northside Emergency Material Assistance Program, better known as NNEMAP. Through the years, NNEMAP operated out of a basement of a home, and then a basement of a church. NNEMAP grew over the years and was an important service provider for the community. NNEMAP was support- ed by over 30 churches, and had become a partner agency of Mid-Ohio Food Bank. These organiza- tions and partnerships were critical to the success of NNEMAP. As time passed and Columbus grew, our neighborhood changed. Many of our clients were no longer nearby, but still came in large numbers by bus, car or foot. In 2014, the church building we had oper- ated from was sold. Within a few months we were asked to move. The move took us to South Linden. This move proved to be such a blessing. It was a more open building, allowing us to provide a full choice shopping environment. It was still on the bus line, had triple the parking, and was handicap accessible. But most importantly, we had moved closer to the need. Since the move in 2015, we are 50% larger and have extended our service area. Our board and staff are committed to embracing the Linden community, as it is our home. But it also is a focus area for the City of Columbus, United Way, Columbus Public Health, and many civic organizations and corporations. We believe we can make a more significant impact by partnering with the schools, addressing infant mortality through the Cele- brate One Program, and extending our reach by adding a second location. We are excited about the future, and are working with partners throughout the city to plan for the years ahead.
