    # 1120 The Newport Forest Bulletin Jl25/18 Citizen Science & Monitoring Nature Date and time: Wednesday July 25 2018 2:15 - 5:45 pm. Weather: Pr 35 mm; RH 74%; BP 101.3 kPa; sun/cloud; N 10 kmh; T 26º C Contents: More insects, with the help of two budding entomologists. Standing in The “Hole”: Layla Amer (left) with sister Sarah (right), Sarah’s son Noah and his friend Mahmoud. Noah has his collecting jar and Mahmoud has one of our nets. I brought an entourage with me to the property today: Sarah and Layla came with Sarah’s son Noah and his friend Mahmoud. Although Noah has only recently switched allegiance from dinosaurs to insects, his older friend Mahmoud has been at it for some time. He even maintains a “Bug Book” in which he writes down all the “bugs” he finds. After parking by the Nook and unloading, I was delighted to find 35 mm of precipitation in the rain gauge. As for temperature, a balmy 26º C. To make a long story short, I managed five sweeps today, the last two carried out by our assistant Layla. I suspect that readers are beginning to find my interminable descriptions of bag contents tiresome. The good stuff is all listed below, in any case. After my first sweep in the vegetation along the edge of the Gallery Forest, I took everybody to the River Landing where I did a second sweep among the giant Cup Plants and other plants in bloom. These seem to bring the most insects and spiders.

Araneae (Spider) Photos Araneae (Spiders) About Information on: Spider Photos of Links to WWW Spiders Spiders of North America Relationships Spider Groups Spider Resources -- An Identification Manual About Spiders As in the other arachnid orders, appendage specialization is very important in the evolution of spiders. In spiders the five pairs of appendages of the prosoma (one of the two main body sections) that follow the chelicerae are the pedipalps followed by four pairs of walking legs. The pedipalps are modified to serve as mating organs by mature male spiders. These modifications are often very complicated and differences in their structure are important characteristics used by araneologists in the classification of spiders. Pedipalps in female spiders are structurally much simpler and are used for sensing, manipulating food and sometimes in locomotion. It is relatively easy to tell mature or nearly mature males from female spiders (at least in most groups) by looking at the pedipalps -- in females they look like functional but small legs while in males the ends tend to be enlarged, often greatly so. In young spiders these differences are not evident. There are also appendages on the opisthosoma (the rear body section, the one with no walking legs) the best known being the spinnerets. In the first spiders there were four pairs of spinnerets. Living spiders may have four e.g., (liphistiomorph spiders) or three pairs (e.g., mygalomorph and ecribellate araneomorphs) or three paris of spinnerets and a silk spinning plate called a cribellum (the earliest and many extant araneomorph spiders). Spinnerets' history as appendages is suggested in part by their being projections away from the opisthosoma and the fact that they may retain muscles for movement Much of the success of spiders traces directly to their extensive use of silk and poison.

We studied the features of the web of this species by examining the stabilimenta, variations in form and quantity, presence and absence of stabilimentum and structure to be able to understand the nature of web building especially the factors that affect the nature of the built web. Field observations reveal that the stabilimenta of A. luzona are mainly discoid or cruciate which significantly depended on body size. Smaller individuals (body size < 0.6 cm) produced mainly discoid stabilimenta and larger individuals (body size > 0.6 cm) produced strictly cruciate stabilimenta that are 1-armed, 2-armed, 3-armed, 4- armed, or 5-armed. Results also showed that the spiders’ body size was positively correlated to the number of stabilimentum arms, length of upper arms and to the length difference between upper and lower arms.

Prior to this study, little attention has been given to how chemical cues influence the predatory behaviour of these spiders with complex eyes and visual acuity unrivalled In any other animals of comparable size. Three categories of predation are considered: salticids preying on conspecifics (cannibalism), salticids preying on non-conspecific spiders (araneophagy) and salticids preying on ants (myrmecophagy). Primary study animals are Portia spp.
