Adapted and Directed by Tony Humrichouser DIRECTOR’S NOTES

The Stuff that Dreams are Made On

The Tempest was first performed before King James on “Hallowmas night”, November 1, 1611 at the newly established Blackfriars Hall in London. It was rumored and quickly confirmed that this monumental event was to be the final work presented by William Shakespeare.

The reason for Shakespeare’s early retirement is one of the many mysteries surrounding his life. Perhaps as early as 1610 and certainly no later than 1612, at a time when he was still at the height of his TONY popularity and still in apparent good health.

HUMRICHOUSER Shakespeare announces his departure from his life in the theatre via Prospero at the end of The Tempest. The character walks on stage Artistic Director alone after the final curtain has fallen and announces that he has relinquished his powers. CONTACT US:

THE KALAMAZOO The fact that a character directly addresses the audience, breaking CIVIC THEATRE the spell that had sustained the viewer's suspension of disbelief, is 329 South Park St. seen by dramaturgs as the playwright himself appearing in Prospero's Kalamazoo, MI 49007 persona and taking his final bow:

And my ending is despair, BUSINESS OFFICE: Unless I be reliev'd by prayer, 269—343—2280 Which pierces so, that it assaults Mercy itself, and frees all faults.

BOX OFFICE: As you from crimes would pardon'd be, 269—343—1313 Let your indulgence set me free.

Desiring a peaceful life, Shakespeare turned his back on the FAX: tempestuous world of the theatre. He returned to his home and family 269—343—0532 in Warwickshire and disappeared into the sunset of his own life. As he bid farewell to London and the stage, taking his final bow, he speaks his last words to posterity in the last words of his last play. The entire Kalamazoo Civic Company has enjoyed working on this FACEBOOK new, innovative and fresh interpretation of The Tempest. At a time in Facebook.com/KazooCivic our history when it feels as if the entire world is "tempest-tossed," it has been a joy to have landed and found our footing in the theatre.
