Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach over twenty years, the back stories of the now iconic characters from and Dave Gibbon's landmark have remained a mystery, until now. Eisner Award-winning writer and creator of Bullets Brian Azzarello brings his gritty, nuanced storytelling to these two recognizable characters. Jones by Alex Carr. Before the prequels to Watchmen --the must-read, heralded graphic novel by Alan Moore and --were even published, critics, fans, and the original creators all had their say. Soon, however, top-tier talent signed on to revisit the dark world of superhero deconstruction, and DC recently published all of the works across four graphic novels. To coincide with the release, DC offered us an extensive interview with three of the creators behind Before Watchmen: Rorschach and Before Watchmen: Comedian now collected in one volume --writer Brian Azzarello and artists J. Jones and Lee Bermejo. The frank conversation follows below. There's no getting around the controversy surrounding the Before Watchmen project. Upon being approached to work on Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach, what was your first reaction? Brian Azzarello: My first reaction was "You've got to be kidding," which was then countered with "We're serious. Jones: Dan [DiDio, co-publisher of DC Entertainment] pulled me aside at the Baltimore Comic Con and told me he was planning something audacious, and wanted to know if I would be interested. He said a lot of people may hate the idea, but I was intrigued by the opportunity to work with these iconic characters. Dan gave me my choice of characters except for Dr. Manhattan, which had already been claimed by Adam Hughes. Naturally, I chose Comedian, based on the outline of what Brian planned to do Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach the story. I think I got the best character of the lot. Following up on a iconic piece of art like Watchmen can be very daunting. Lee, J. Lee Bermejo: Honestly, every project is equally daunting for their own reasons. I can't control the public's expectations or desires. I just have to do what I do and hope that it resonates with somebody. We all love the original Watchmen and, obviously, wanted to treat the material with the respect it deserves. So I would say that I Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach excited and energized to work on the Comedian book. What do you think is the most compelling part about the Rorschach and Comedian characters? Brian: I think the most compelling thing about Rorschach is his unwavering will—even when he's wrong about something. He's fascinating; a character that is made of so many shades of grey that sees the world in black and white. There's no room for Rorschach in Rorschach's worldview. Lee: Rorschach Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach pure vigilante fetish. In certain circumstances, he is everything we wish we could be but also what repels us about that lifestyle. A fascinating dichotomy. He can seem like a really jaded, hard-assed, indifferent character, yet, in the Watchmen graphic novel, he is the impetus for the whole story. If he had not reacted to ' plot in such a human way, he would not have been killed, and Rorschach would never have investigated his death, unraveling the whole ball of yarn. He is a more complex character than the simple cartoon good or evil, and we wanted to explore how he became so jaded and willing to do the horrible things he does, while still maintaining a hidden core of humanity. A Vietnam tale seemed the right way to Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach at his hardening and the building of his facade. Lee: Finding a good collaborator is like finding a girlfriend. When it starts working good, you don't want to stop until it's over. Brian is a great partner because he leaves you your space and freedom but gives you everything fundamental and necessary for that freedom to be used well. Before Watchmen: Rorscharchmaybe more than any of the other Before Watchmen prequels, dives into the depths of human depravity, and that's saying a lot. Lee, did you have any pause knowing how dark Brian Azzarello's script would get? Lee: I looked at this book in a very fetishistic way. It was exactly that darkness I wanted to explore, so I was ready for anything. Was it a different writing experience for you knowing your main character had an ending you did not create? Brian: Not at all—both these stories have their own endings for the characters. They're just not their final endings. Brian, how do you continually go to such dark places with some of the most despicable characters in comics? Brian: Well, I guess I'm drawn to darker stories. I believe it's in our faults where our humanity becomes most apparent—both for good and bad. Or maybe you just don't know me very well. The Before Watchmen: Comedian story was steeped in American history. I would say, along those lines, though, that I did spend a great deal of time researching Vietnam and the whole era of the 60's. The Watts riots, the cars, suits, uniforms, weapons, military equipment and camps, villages in Vietnam—everything had to be researched to the Nth degree so that I could be accurate with the illustrations. Aug 01, Sam Quixote rated it really liked it. From there he goes to Vietnam and single-handedly manages to lower the level of the war. Set ina serial killer called The Bard is abducting, murdering, and carving messages into the bodies of women. I always love his work - the textures, the detail, the realism - and his pages for Rorschach are superb. Lee Bermejo made a Rorschach-type print of the city Rorschach patrols in the Rorschach series - and it looks amazing! The one major flaw in this story is when Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach tells them to deal with him and they just Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach him near to death. Maybe also as a metaphorical back-to-basics approach to crime-fighting, in contrast to the future presented by Doctor Manhattan and Ozymandias. And thankfully he, along with the respective art teams, bring their A-games to Comedian and Rorschach. View all 3 comments. Mar 06, Gavin rated it did not like it Shelves: comics. Purely unnecessary prequels. Unwanted cash in, even further proof that Brian Azzazelo or whatever his name is cannot write someone else's character to save his life. The artwork is fine but that doesn't change anything. Trying to tie the comedian and Rorschach into actual history is stupid. The book is stupid and I'm stupid for having read it. I know apart from the publication order there is no real order to this series of prequels - so as such you do jump around a bit going from one story to the next I know there is now a huge omnibus edition out there Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach I cannot afford that, which I suspect puts the series in to the order it was meant to be. However the two stories in this volume are probably the most went known - and by that in passing reference in the original Watchmen book. The two stores in this volume I think are the most d I know apart from the publication order there is no real order to this series of prequels - so as such you do jump around a bit going from one story to the next I know there is now a huge omnibus edition out there but I cannot afford that, which I suspect puts the series in to the order it was meant to be. The two stores in this volume I think are the most dark and violent Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach the ones so far - is that down to the story and the artwork or the intention of the writers I do not know. But considering the cover the Vietnam years of the Comedian and the early years of Roscharch you know its not going to be an easy ride I will not give anything away although those familiar with the original story will be able to guess what was going on in these times. The series in general though - I feel adds depth to the characters and fill in their histories- for me making them a little more understandable if no more likeable. However I do not think you are missing anything vital I could be wrong having only read 3 of the 4 books so far. May 11, Craig rated it liked it. Again, these stories have me wondering about their need to exist. Both are suitably grim and dark. And Rohrschach is his usual grim self, musing on the rot and cancer eating away at New York as he takes do Again, these stories have me wondering about their need to exist. Unfortunately, neither of these stories is much fun to read and neither of them really gives us any insight into these characters that we didn't already know from Alan Moore's original series. So, ultimately, what's the point? A cynical cash-grab by DC? If you really, really dig these characters, you might get something out of these stories. I didn't mind them, but I really didn't find them very compelling, either and I certainly wouldn't want to shell out big bucks to get these, either in single issues or in these Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach editions. If you've got to read these, go to your local public library. Jun 20, Shannon rated it it was amazing Shelves: fantasy-scifiactiongraphic- novelsbooks-reviewedmy-very-best-reads. This one focuses on the Comedian and especially his time with the Kennedys and Vietnam. The latter part is on Rorschach and his earlier years on his own and dealing with a dangerous gang. I especially likes this one for its themes and character focuses. It didn't cop out on the tough topics. Artwork is great as usual. View 1 comment. Mar 05, Timothy Boyd rated it liked it. I really enjoy these pre-Watchmen books. Tons of backstory are filled in and a lot of the questions about the characters from the series are answered. Sep 17, Martin rated it really liked it Shelves: reviewed. Alright then. Azzarello delivers Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach couple of good scripts which are only made better by the talents of superstar artists JG Jones Comedian and Lee Bermejo Rorschach. The stories help flesh out the background on these two characters moreso for The Comedian, who as a Forrest Gump way of being at the right place at the right time. Jones portrays the historical figures really well and Bermejo's segment simply looks incredible. His portrayal of NYC in the mids is dead-on. The De Niro cameo Alright then. Jan 06, Allie rated it liked it Shelves: mediocrity-at-its- finestgraphic-novels. I really enjoyed the other Before Watchmen. This one? Not so much. Seemed jumpy to me, both stories. And I've been looking forward to this, so the letdown really sucks. I have now almost read all of the Before Watchmen series reviews Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach followbut I started with this one. In a way I'm glad I did, because this was by far not my favorite of the lot. If it wasn't for the Rorschach part of this story, I don't think I would have given it 3 stars. But lets start with The Comedian: The Comedian is not a nice man, and I'm not talking about breaking the law, killing a few baddies etc. No he really goes way over the line. I won't get into it, but lets just say that I f I have now almost read all of the Before Watchmen series reviews to followbut I started with this one. I won't get into it, but lets just say that I found his behavior disgusting. It all starts off fine, I particularly liked the first issue, with Marilyn, JFK and Jackie Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach this was pretty cool to me. Before Watchmen: Comedian/Rorschach - Comics by comiXology

Cons: Both stories have problems that prevent them from being as good as they could have been. Overall: This is a collection with some specific but powerful appeal. The volume is a great showcase for both the Comedian and Rorschach, delivering stories that emphasize what makes these characters interesting to read. However, the stories themselves have some structural problems that prevent them from reaching their full potential. In the end, this Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach a book for fans of these characters who simply want to see more of them. However, the Comedian story starts out a bit slow and Rorschach story has a lackluster conclusion. It serves as a testament to how dark this character is and how his brand of extremism can lead to equally bad decisions being made in the real world. The biggest problem with this story is that it takes a bit before it gets truly interesting. Watching him struggle no matter the odds and no matter the situation is a testament to willpower, even if this willpower is energizing some seriously Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach motives. The downside to this story is that it ends too quickly. The main narrative has Rorschach get lucky in escaping imprisonment by his enemies and has the main villain fall victim to random violence. Meanwhile, the side-story ends with a serial killer being caught before the weight of his presence really gets a chance to fully impact the narrative. Jones approaches the Comedian chapters with a realism that suits the serious nature of this particular story. Then, in the Rorschach chapters, things get even darker. It emphasizes the dirt and grime covering the city while constantly contrasting it against light from buildings and the glow of neon. Altogether, the artwork in this volume is high quality and is simply great to see. Though technically set before Watchmenit is best to read this Before Watchmen: Comedian / Rorschach: Comedian / Rorschach after reading Watchmen. All Before Watchmen Reviews.
