th Newsletter 25 May 2018 I would like say a very big well done to all of the Year 6 children for their hard work and commendable attitude during their SATs tests last week. I would also like to commend the rest of the school for being so considerate

and thoughtful throughout this time. Thank you to Mrs Thomas from our Governing Body for organising the breakfast club and to all the staff and governors who helped each morning, it was thoroughly enjoyed by the children. Year 6 teachers organised a fun ‘End of SATs’ party which was also much appreciated.

This week I’m delighted that so many children have been supporting ‘Walk to School Week’ and also taking part in ‘Happy Shoesday’ to help raise money for Living Streets’ vital projects. There was certainly some very colourful footwear around school on Tuesday! The Friends have launched the ‘Grow a Pound’ Project this week for pupils in Upper School and it will run for

6 weeks. It’s a fun way for students to use all their powers of imagination and ingenuity to raise money for the

school and hopefully win a prize for themselves.

Going Home Arrangements Can we please remind all parents that if your child is being picked up by anyone other than on the contact list, you advise the school office by telephone, an email or a written note to the class teacher.

If we do not receive notification and they are not on the contact list, we cannot let them go without parental consent. Thank you.

Royal Wedding Picnic and Dress Up Day th On Friday 18 May our school celebrated Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding by having a picnic lunch in our school grounds. Our playground was decorated with red, white and blue bunting and Union Jack flags. At lunchtime, each year group was gathered onto tables in our playground to eat a picnic fit for a king! We would like to thank our kitchen staff for preparing many delicious picnic boxes which included a chocolate crown

cookie. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed our picnic and partied in style wearing their wedding outfits. Written by India and Yasmin

Year 5 - Healthy Snack Design Technology Project

On Friday 11th May, Year 5 children took part in a snack sale. All week they had been researching, designing, costing and making their snacks in the build up to Friday. They learnt all about profit and loss, maximising profits and working as a team. The children really enjoyed the process and especially the sale when they could see their products being sold and the money they were making. Year 5 is full of future entrepreneurs! The children made a huge profit of £80.41 for the school in its bid to purchase an on-site defibrillator. Well done to all the children in Year 5 and a huge thank you to all the staff and children who came to the sale and made it such a great success.

SATs Breakfast Club The staff and governors would like to say a BIG thank you to the following sponsors who kindly supported the Year 6 SATs breakfast club again by donating products:

Co-Op, Victoria Road, Netley Abbey Tesco, Towers Waitrose, Locks Heath Warburtons (Basingstoke depot)

Without the ongoing support and generosity of these sponsors we would not be able to offer the Year 6 pupils such a wide range of nutritious and hearty breakfast options. We strongly believe that the breakfast club gives the pupils a positive start to their day.

All surplus boxes of cereal were donated to Netley Food Bank.

Outdoor Education Day The whole school enjoyed a wonderful morning outside last week after participating in National Outdoor Classroom Day. All of the children had a fantastic time exploring the school grounds and it was a wonderful opportunity for children to take part in a range of teambuilding activities, as well as some exciting learning experiences. Each class explored the pond area, Bat Cave, field and playground. Children enjoyed spotting wildlife, pond dipping, creating art using natural resources and even going on bug hunts and nature walks!

Pupil Voice This section is written by groups of children within our school and the following report is from JRSO about ‘Walk to School’ week.

This week, we took part in a walk to school week. This was when we invited all the children to walk to school as much as possible. Each time they walked to school they earned a point for their class. The winning class will be announced on Friday and will receive an active afternoon TREAT! On Tuesday, we took part in Happy Shoesday. On this day, children were allowed to wear whatever shoes made them happy for a donation to Sustrans charity. As a school we raised £144.25 .

Thank you for your support and donations, Kye (JRSO)

Water Bottles - Drink to Think! Please ensure your child brings in a named water bottle to school every day. This is especially important during the summer months. Drinking water throughout the day keeps children hydrated which in turn increases brain activity. It also prevents headaches. Children are encouraged to refill their bottles during the school day. Thank you for your co-operation.

Staff Update The summer term inevitably leads to changes in staffing. Miss Smith is to join her partner in Birmingham and we would like to wish her every success in future. She has made an extremely valuable contribution to our school and we know her new school will be delighted to have such a good teacher join them. I would like to welcome Miss Georgia Whittlesea, Miss Emily Taylor and Mr Callum Oliver to our staff in September. Miss Whittlesea joins us as an experienced leader from a school in Surrey, Miss Taylor and Mr Oliver joins us from other Hampshire Schools. Intergr8 Dance Dance Off Competition 13 th May I had the pleasure of taking seven children from Netley Abbey Junior School to participate in our annual Dance Off at The Berry Theatre. Performing our Alice in Wonderland dance, which was over four minutes long, each child was given a main character with their own special section. Each student was incredibly brave and as none of them had previously done street dance before it was ultimate success! In the second half of their dance they had some tricky choreography which they mastered beautifully. The whole theatre was most impressed when I had to run to the lighting desk to sort out a change in the music, the children just walked onstage as the music came on and performed their whole routine without me saying a word. They managed their props and the scene changes as if they had been performing for years. Their award for the evening was ‘The Most Magical Performance’ and came back with a trophy, a medal each and very big smiles. They made me extremely proud!

Lower School Cluster Key Steps Gymnastics Competition at Botley School - 17 th May Wow, what an amazing experience for the Year 4 team! After a lot of practice and nerves the team performed superbly, showing determination and enthusiasm throughout. The children had to perform individually to a panel of external gymnastics coaches, who judged their performances in the vault and in a set body management routine on the floor. As a team we came 6 th position overall. Although, all our girls were the superstars of the competition, Sienna was individually ranked 1st and Saffira 2nd out of 28 competitors.
