House Church Demography According to the Bertelsmann Stiftung Transformation Index (BTI), which analyzes the quality of democracy and political management in 128 countries (Bertelsmann Stiftung n.d.), there are an estimated 80 million Christians in China, "many of whom congregate in illegal house churches" (ibid. 2014, 5). The Wall Street Journal reports that house church members could number between 30 and 60 million (29 July 2011). Voice of America (VOA) notes that the exact number of Christians is difficult to estimate because many worship at underground house churches (VOA 16 June 2014). A Survey of Baptist World Alliance Conversations with other [1] Churches and some implications for Baptist Identity. (Ken Manley) The Baptist World Alliance has now completed four inter-church conversations. The first was with the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (1973-77); the second with Roman Catholics through the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity (1984-88); the third with the Lutheran World Federation (1986-89); the fourth with the Mennonite World Conference (1989- 92).[2] Since then conversations have been held with the Orthodox Church or, more precisely, ‘pre-conversations’ have been shared with the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul (1994-97) although these seem to have been discontinued by the Orthodox representatives. Although initial conversations with the Anglican Consultative Council were commenced in 1991, formal conversations did not begin until 2000 (because of delays by the Anglicans) and are continuing. The question of further talks with the Roman Catholics is being considered. The General Secretary has also raised the desirability of conversations with Pentecostals, a possibility often canvassed also within the Doctrine and Interchurch Cooperation Study Commission.[3] As we prepare to celebrate the centenary of the BWA it is opportune to review these bilateral conversations, assess what has been achieved, acknowledge what has not been accomplished, explore what these conversations have revealed about Baptist identity, both to others and ourselves, and consider future possibilities and directions. The first striking fact about these conversations is that they did not begin until the 1970s! To understand this it is necessary first to consider the larger question of the relationship between the BWA and the ecumenical movement generally. -

Although there have not altogether been wanting from the Protes tant churches since the time of the Reformation sincere desires and attempts to bring about a reunion of the Christian churches, historians of the ecumenical movement customarily regard it as properly a de velopment of the twentieth century. The pietist "Revival" of the preceding century may however be considered as having had a cer- 156 Dominicana tain ecumenical character, and as having prepared the way for the present-day movement. The influence of the "Revival" was re sponsible for the formation of such interdenominational organizations as the Universal Evangelical Alliance in 1847, the Y.M.C.A. in 1878, the Y.W.C.A. in 1898 and the World Student Christian's Association in 1895. The 1910 World Missionary Conference held in Edinburgh marks the beginning of the Protestant ecumenical movement. This setting was a most appropriate one for the start of the movement, for much of the impulse for the ecumenical movement has come from the mission of the churches. During the course of the Edinburgh meet ing it was emphasized how great was the obstacle to the spread of the Gospel in mission land occasioned by the divisions so con spicuous in Christianity. Among other achievements of the conference, the International Missionary Conference was established not long afterward as a permanent body to promote the missionary efforts of the churches and to study the various difficulties involved m the mission effort. Subsequent to the Edinburgh Conference, the formation of the Life and Work Movement constitutes the next step in the course of the ecumenical movement. -

Trulson Revised February, 2017 1 American Baptist International Ministries was formed over two centuries ago by Baptists in the United States who believed that God was calling them to work together “in one sacred effort” to make disciples of all nations. Organized in 1814, it is the oldest Baptist international mission agency in North America and the second oldest in the world, following the Baptist Missionary Society formed in England in 1792 to send William and Dorothy Carey to India. International Ministries currently serves more than 1,800 short- term and long-term missionaries annually, bringing U.S. and Puerto Rico churches together with partners in 74 countries in ministries that tell the good news of Jesus Christ while meeting human needs. This is a review of the missiology exemplified by American Baptist International Ministries that has both emerged from and helped to shape American Baptist life. 2 American Baptists are better understood as a movement than an institution. Whether religious or secular, movements tend to be diverse, multi-directional and innovative. To retain their character and remain true to their core purpose beyond their first generation, movements must be able to do two seemingly opposite things. They must adopt dependable procedures while adapting to changing contexts. If they lose the balance between organization and innovation, most movements tend to become rigidly institutionalized or to break apart. Baptists have experienced both. For four centuries the American Baptist movement has borne its witness within the mosaic of Christianity. -

House Church Networks A church for a new generation By Larry Kreider House to House Publications 2001 Chapter 1 There’s a New Church Emerging! A new species of church is emerging throughout North America. Hungry for community and relationship, people are learning the values of the kingdom by first-hand participation. They meet in small groups in homes, offices, boardrooms or restaurants. For them church has become a way of life where discipleship and growth occurs naturally as everyone develops their gifts and “learns by doing,” under the mentorship of spiritual fathers and mothers. Within the next ten to fifteen years, I believe these new house church networks will dot the landscape of North America just as they already do in other nations of the world. They are called house churches because each one functions as a little church. They are networks because they work together to foster accountability and encouragement. The New Testament church was defined as the people. Believers did not go to church or join the church; they were the church. All members functioned as priests because everyone served as ministers. Each person got on-the-job training and learned how to make disciples. These followers of Christ practiced their faith in spiritual families, met in homes and radically changed their world. The constant need for new wineskins New wineskins are continually needed to accommodate the believers who do not fit into the current church structures. It didn’t take long to conclude that we must find ways to plant new churches (new wineskins) and begin the process of handing over the reins to the next generation. -

Welsh disestablishment: ‘A blessing in disguise’. David W. Jones The history of the protracted campaign to achieve Welsh disestablishment was to be characterised by a litany of broken pledges and frustrated attempts. It was also an exemplar of the ‘democratic deficit’ which has haunted Welsh politics. As Sir Henry Lewis1 declared in 1914: ‘The demand for disestablishment is a symptom of the times. It is the democracy that asks for it, not the Nonconformists. The demand is national, not denominational’.2 The Welsh Church Act in 1914 represented the outcome of the final, desperate scramble to cross the legislative line, oozing political compromise and equivocation in its wake. Even then, it would not have taken place without the fortuitous occurrence of constitutional change created by the Parliament Act 1911. This removed the obstacle of veto by the House of Lords, but still allowed for statutory delay. Lord Rosebery, the prime minister, had warned a Liberal meeting in Cardiff in 1895 that the Welsh demand for disestablishment faced a harsh democratic reality, in that: ‘it is hard for the representatives of the other 37 millions of population which are comprised in the United Kingdom to give first and the foremost place to a measure which affects only a million and a half’.3 But in case his audience were insufficiently disheartened by his homily, he added that there was: ‘another and more permanent barrier which opposes itself to your wishes in respect to Welsh Disestablishment’, being the intransigence of the House of Lords.4 The legislative delay which the Lords could invoke meant that the Welsh Church Bill was introduced to parliament on 23 April 1912, but it was not to be enacted until 18 September 1914. -

The 20th century saw a remarkable revival of a doctrine once considered dead and deadly: the doctrine of the Trinity. This revival was kicked off by Karl Barth and continues to this day as theologians produce work of remarkable creativity and practitioners do likewise. This course will focus on the doctrine of the Trinity in both contemporary and classical exposition, since the former cannot be understood without the latter. Students will study one classical interpreter, such as Tertullian, Augustine, the Cappadocians, Julian, Karl Barth, Karl Rahner, Sarah Coakley, Sallie McFague (note: classical doesn’t have to mean dead!). You will present your findings on this figure in class. Students will also study a contemporary expositor of the doctrine, such as Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault, Miroslav Volf, John Zizioulas (like the first list this one could expand infinitely). These folks do something unique with the doctrine—trying to emphasize how it shapes our view of humanity, society, spirituality, politics, gender, or nearly any other created thing of your choice. We will also each read the material for class which reflects both classical and contemporary approaches. Students will take turns leading off discussion for the day. Students will conclude the course with an appropriate project to demonstrate what they have learned—an academic paper perhaps of some 15 or so pages, a series of sermons, a catechetical exercise, plans for a political gathering—the possibilities are nearly endless.
