Rork1 & Tanya Renner1 Received: 30 May 2018 /Revised: 14 August 2018 /Accepted: 23 August 2018 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2018 Abstract Ground beetles (Carabidae) are recognized for their diverse, chemically-mediated defensive behaviors. Produced using a pair of pygidial glands, over 250 chemical constituents have been characterized across the family thus far, many of which are considered allomones. Over the past century, our knowledge of Carabidae exocrine chemistry has increased substantially, yet the role of these defensive compounds in mediating behavior other than repelling predators is largely unknown. It is also unclear whether non-defensive compounds produced by ground beetles mediate conspecific and heterospecific interactions, such as sex- aggregation pheromones or kairomones, respectively. Here we review the current state of non-exocrine Carabidae semiochemistry and behavioral research, discuss the importance of semiochemical research including but not limited to allomones, and describe next-generation methods for elucidating the underlying genetics and evolution of chemically- mediated behavior. Introduction According to BAMEUL (1992), male and female reproductive systems of Hydrophilidae are very poorly known, and no complete study of their morphology is available. The spermatheca provides good specific distinguishing characters in many female Coleoptera (see BAMEUL 1992, 1996, 1997a, 1997b; MILLER 2001a, 2001b). Comparing internal genitalic macro- or micro-structures may also play a valuable role in finding phylogenetic relationships of species groups (see DETTNER et al. 1986; SIMICZYJEW 2002). In this paper a detailed study of the morphology of the reproductive systems of Iranian specimens of Hydrochara BERTHOLD, H. dichroma (FAIRMAIRE) and H. flavipes (STEVEN), is presented. In addition, histological studies on testicles in H. dichroma and on the shape of sperm in both species were carried out, aiming to distinguish the spermatheca, spermathecal gland and seminal vesicle in the reproductive system by tracing the sperm in these organs. -

We evaluated completeness, accuracy, and historical trend of the taxonomic knowledge on the myrmecophilous ground beetle tribe Paussini (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Paussinae). Accumulation curves for valid names and synonyms of species, subgenera, and genera were modelled using logistic functions. Analyses of trends in synonymies suggest that few currently accepted taxa will be recognized to be synonymous in the future. This may indicate thataussini P are a taxonomically relatively stable tribe of carabid beetles. However, this result might also be due to the lack of recent taxonomic work in some biogeographical regions. -

ACTA ENTOMOLOGICA MUSEI NATIONALIS PRAGAE Published 30.vi.2010 Volume 50(1), pp. 321–340 ISSN 0374-1036 Abstracts of the Immature Beetles Meeting 2009 October 1–2, Prague, Czech Republic Martin FIKÁČEK, Jiří SKUHROVEC & Petr ŠÍPEK (editors) The third Immature Beetles Meeting was held in Prague during October 1–2, 2009, near- ly precisely two years after the previous meeting (for abstracts see FIKÁČEK et al. (2007)). Similarly as in 2007, the meeting took place at the Faculty of Science, Charles University, in cooperation with the National Museum in Prague and the Crop Research Institute in Pra- gue. Altogether 36 participants from Europe, North and South America and Japan attended the meeting. Among those, the most expected was Cleide Costa from Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil, who presented the results of her life-long studies of the morphology and biology of larval Coleoptera. It was also nice to see that the number of pregraduate students was higher than in 2007 meeting and one of them (Yusuke Minoshima from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan) even presented a very interesting lecture! During both days, attendants presented 12 short lectures and six posters, whose abstracts are presented below in alphabetical order. Coffee breaks and a joint lunch in a nearby restaurant provided a handy opportunity for informal discussions of the lectures and individual research projects and interests of the participants. During both evenings, most people continued in a slightly more relaxed setting in a pub over a glass (or perhaps two) of Czech beer. To sum up, the meeting seemed to be again very fruitful.
