    SHANTI SWARUP BHATNAGAR PRIZE FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2005 Biological Sciences Dr Tapas Kumar Kundu The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Biological Sciences has been awarded to Dr Tapas Kumar Kundu of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore. Dr Kundu has done outstanding research in the area of chromatin transcription. He has identified PC4 as a functional component of chromatin and as a unique activator of P53. He has also established the role of acetylation in chromatin transcription and histone chaperone activity, besides using this process for identifying new drug candidates. & Dr Shekhar Chintamani Mande The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Biological Sciences has been awarded to Dr Shekhar Chintamani Mande of the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad. Dr Mande has contributed very richly to the area of structural biology of proteins. His studies have thrown light on the unrecognized function of chaperonin-10 of Mycobacterium tuberculosis . His studies have provided unusual insights to the mechanism of action of heat shock proteins and those involved in oxidative stress from M. tuberculosis. Chemical Sciences Dr Samaresh Bhattacharya The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Chemical Sciences has been awarded to Dr Samaresh Bhattacharya of the Jadavpur University, Kolkata. Dr Bhattacharya has made outstanding contributions to the platinum group coordination compounds and their applications to activation of organic molecules. & Dr S Ramakrishnan The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for the year 2005 in Chemical Sciences has been awarded to Dr S. Ramakrishnan of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

A perusal of the list of publications of the members of the Institute shows that this year has been an academically productive year. The Institute hosted an international conference and five workshops this year. These include the Indo UK Conference on Number Theory, ISEA Course on Security, Meeting on Modeling Infectious Diseases, ATM Workshop on Al- gebraic Topology, Annual Foundation School in Mathematics and the first K. S. Krishnan Discussion Meeting on Frontiers in Quantum Science. Further the Institute organized the Albert Einstein Annus Mirabilis Centennial Public Lectures, featuring talks by Nobel Laure- ates Professor Anthony Leggett and Professor Zhores I. Alferov, and the eminent theoretical physicist, Professor E. C. George Sudarshan. I am also happy to note that the faculty members of the Institute have served as members in the sectional committees of the academies, in award committees and in the board of studies in Mathematics and Physics of HBNI. The Subashis Nag Memorial lecture is an annual event where a course of lectures are given by an eminent personality on a subject related to the work of (Late) Professor Subashis Nag. Our student strength has increased to 129. We are proud to say that more and more students are getting benefitted from the thriving outreach programmes that we have and the efforts of our faculty, both at an individual and institutional level. Our post-doctoral student strength has gone up to 53. Academic productivity of the members of Institute has remained high. There were several significant publications reported in national and international journals and our faculty have authored few books as well. Six students were awarded Ph.D., Four students have submitted their Ph.D. theses and two students were awarded M.Sc., by Research. Three students have submitted master’s theses under the supervision of our faculty. 19 conferences and workshops were organized at IMSc during 2013-2014. These include Discussion Meeting in Topology, Brainstorming Meeting on Econophysics: Science for the Economy, 13th Asian Quantum Information Science Conference (AQIS13), One Per Cent: Mathematics workshop for students of classes XI and XII, joint IMSc-ISI workshop on Subfactors, Games of Imperfect Information via Automata and Logic, Discussion meeting on statistical physics of fracture, 1st IMSc School on Quantum Information, Advanced school on Parameterized and Kernelization (ASPAK)to name but a few.
