Photo: Chandler Proctor and Jaimi Cullen at Philbrook Museum of Art. Tulsa Ballet collaborated with Philbrook Museum of Art for the first time This season saw the first-ever collaboration between Philbrook Museum of Art and Tulsa Ballet. The project featured four artists—composer and musician Ryan Lott, visual artist and painter Eric Sall, costume designer Emma Kingsbury, and Resident Choreographer Ma Cong—all of whom came together to create a thrilling piece of performance art.

The piece, titled Pentaptych, featured Sall on stage alongside the Tulsa Ballet dancers. Each performance began with a blank canvas as its focus. With the first note of the piece, one of the Tulsa Ballet dancers would strike the canvas with a brush of color, and from that Sall would create a new painting in real time during the performance. The collaboration culminated in an outdoor presentation of the piece in the Philbrook Gardens on September 29, 2018.

“This joint project is an artistic and cultural endeavor, one that is pushing the boundaries of our respective arts. We are entering uncharted territory but we promised you, on day one, that we would pursue excellence in the art you are allowing us to create. This collaboration is a fulfillment of that promise. Thank you for supporting Tulsa Ballet and Philbrook Museum of Art in this exciting collaboration.” Marcello Angelini, Artistic Director 6 Tulsa Ballet SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

His homosexuality was long kept a secret, and what is known about his death is still mired by gossip and speculation to this day. The production Photo: The Artists of Tulsa Ballet in Tchaikovsky. featured a stellar creative team, including composer Oliver Peter Graber (Dorothy and the Prince of Oz), Russian historian Daniela Kolic, New Zealand’s top designer Tracy Grant Lord, Resident Choreographer Ma Cong and Artistic Director Marcello Angelini. Andy Blankenbuehler created his first-ever piece for a ballet company for Tulsa Ballet Andy Blankenbuehler, three-time Tony Award winning choreographer of Bandstand, In the Heights, and Hamilton, created his first-ever piece for a ballet company for Tulsa Ballet. The piece, titled Remember Our Song, had its world premiere in May 2019 alongside pieces by renowned choreographers Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine as part of a Broadway-themed Signature Series.

“It is a compelling piece of dance theater, at once brutal and beautiful.” James D. Watts Jr. for Tulsa World Photo: Andy Blankenbuehler in studio with the Artists of Tulsa Ballet.

Annual Impact Report 19 INTEGRATED CAMPAIGN

In 2019, Tulsa Ballet exceeded its $25 million goal for the Defining the Future Campaign, raising a total of $25.2 million thanks to a $450,000 gift from the Lou and Connie Miller Charitable Foundation and trustees Kirk Clausing and Max Vowel. The Campaign, begun in 2015, is the largest fundraising initiative in Tulsa Ballet’s history.

Completion of Center for Dance Education in Broken Arrow The Tulsa Ballet Defining the Future Campaign consists of multiple funding areas, the first being capital funds to build The Hardesty Center for Dance Education in Broken Arrow, the result of a generous gift of 13.72 acres from the Hardesty Family Foundation and its founders, Roger and Donna Hardesty. This facility, designed by Bob Schaefer of Selser Schaefer Architects, opened in 2016 as part of Tulsa Ballet’s 60th anniversary season to support the growing needs for ballet training, education and outreach programs. The school houses the Ann and Jack Graves Studios and the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation Performance Studio, a state-of-the-art, in-house theater with a seating capacity of 160. Additional funding came from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation in the form of a challenge grant, and the Lou and Connie Miller Charitable Foundation, along with multiple individuals, corporations and foundations.

Creation of New Productions Mollie Williford provided the lead gift to support capital funds for new productions, including this past April’s world premiere of Tchaikovsky: The Man Behind the Music by resident choreographer Ma Cong and the world premiere of Dorothy and the Prince of Oz by Edwaard Liang in collaboration with BalletMet of Columbus, Ohio, that debuted in 2016. Additional capital funds from the H.A. and Mary K. Chapman Charitable Foundations and the Suzanne and Jim Kneale Family Foundation have been raised to support an all-new production of The Nutcracker to premiere in a future season.

Endowment Growth Gifts to the Tulsa Ballet endowment have been established to support essential programs in perpetuity. See lead gifts on the following page.
