VIRGINIA ARTS FESTIVAL // COLLAGE DANCE COLLECTIVE COLLAGE DANCE COLLECTIVE 3 Reminding the world that ballet comes in all colors, the acclaimed Collage Dance Collective seeks to connect the African American community to ballet, telling its stories in dance. The company’s photo of five female dancers of color that went viral on social media encapsulated one of Collage’s most powerful messages: classical dance as an art form knows no boundaries, and artists of color have no limits. Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Collage Dance Collective attracts world-class dancers to its mission, and focuses on community outreach and education, estimating that about half its audience has never seen ballet before. Collage believes that participation in the arts enriches communities; the company works to increase access to outstanding ballet training, increase diversity on professional ballet stages, and increase participation by people of color at ballet and other fine arts events. Current American ballet stems from the vision of choreographer George Balanchine, who set ballet standards through his educational institution, School of American Ballet, and dance company, New York City Ballet. These organizations are currently the largest-budget performing company and training facility in the United States, and, along with other major US ballet companies, have adopted Balanchine’s preference for ultra thin, light skinned, young, heteronormative dancers. Due to their financial stability and power, these dance companies set the standard for ballet in America, making it difficult for dancers who do not fit these narrow characteristics to succeed and thrive in the field. The ballet field must adapt to an increasingly diverse society while upholding artistic integrity to the art form’s values. Those who live in America make up a heterogeneous community with a blend of worldwide cultures, but ballet has been slow to focus on diversity in company rosters.

Set to an original piano suite by Josephine Lee, artistic director of the acclaimed Chicago Children’s Choir, this wistful and bittersweet work for seven dancers suggests “the beautiful memories and the wonderful relationships I’ve forged with dancers over the years. I want to celebrate the incredibly intimate, intense, fulfilling and—because of the nature of our profession—often short-lived connections we’ve made, and have bid goodbye along the way,” says Chaves.

She is a lecturer on the Annenberg School of Journalism faculty. Anawalt also directs the USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Program. Anawalt’s best-selling cultural biography, The Joffrey Ballet: Robert Joffrey and the Making of an American Dance Company (Scribner, 1996), was re-issued in January 2012 as an e-book. American Masters Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance is heavily based on her book. Charthel Arthur , Joffrey Ballet Dancer, 1965-1979 Charthel Arthur began her dance training in Pasadena, California with Eva Lorraine. After graduating from high school with honors, she went to New York and was given a full scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet School followed by an apprenticeship to the Joffrey Ballet and three months later she became a full company member. Arthur performed with the Joffrey Ballet for 13 years as a principal dancer. In 1983, Arthur and her husband, Robert Estner moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan to establish a professional ballet school now known as The School of the Grand Rapids Ballet.
