Athletics at Hofstra and on Long Island
Athletics at Hofstra and on Long Island: An exhibit that highlights some fun facts, interesting historical items and photographs of teams and individuals in our sports history. Root, root, root for the home team! All materials from Hofstra University Archives and Long Island Studies, Hofstra Pride: Athletics at Hofstra University Women’s basketball team, 1936, note the name on the bus: Hofstra College was associated with NYU until 1939. Women’s championship basketball team, 1939-40. Helena Mroczkowska Dow, was not only an Olympic fencing champion, but she flew planes! A member of the class of 1940 she was involved in student government, but it was her fencing prowess that brought her to national attention. She was a member of a remarkable Olympic family; her husband fenced in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and was captain of the 1948 US Olympic fencing team. Helena fenced in the 1948 Olympics in London and her son, Robert, fenced sabre in the 1972 Olympics in Munich. It is believed that they are the only “Mother-Father-Son” trio in any sport in US Olympic history. The wrestling squad of 1945-46 went undefeated although they didn’t organize as a team until two years later. In the 1950’s Hofstra played baseball games at Ebbets Field against St. John’s. The Dodgers left town after the 1957 season and the demolition of the stadium began in February of 1960. This photo from 1951. The first time cheerleaders organized at Hofstra was in 1947, this squad from 1952 wears traditional saddle shoes and Hofstra sweaters. -

Five Division Titles up for Grabs, Wild Card Race Tight; All Four National Tv Games Hold Playoff Implications
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE 280 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10017 (212) 450-2000 * FAX (212) 681-7573 WWW.NFLMedia.com Joe Browne, Executive Vice President-Communications Greg Aiello, Vice President-Public Relations FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NFL-REG-15 12/12/06 THREE WEEKS TO GO! FIVE DIVISION TITLES UP FOR GRABS, WILD CARD RACE TIGHT; ALL FOUR NATIONAL TV GAMES HOLD PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS “It’s a crazy year. Anything’s possible.” You got that right, coach! And there are 24 other NFL head coaches who will readily agree with Philadelphia’s ANDY REID. The 25 make up the total number of teams still in Super Bowl contention -- tied for the second most ever in a 16-game schedule with three weeks to go in the season. Sure there are the Chicagos and San Diegos who basically have been steady throughout the season. But then there are the Cincinnatis (4-5 at one point this season) and Philadelphias (5-6 in late November) who have uprighted their seasons and are taking serious aim at the postseason. As the NFL heads into Week 15, Chicago and San Diego are the lone division champs. No other playoff spots have been claimed. Five division titles can be won this week. The jockeying for each conference’s Wild Card spots? It’s as tight as linemen on a kneel-down. In the AFC, two clubs are 8-5 and three 7-6. In the NFC, three teams are at 7-6. And then there are the teams bunched right below that level. “There is still a ton to play for,” says San Diego quarterback PHILIP RIVERS, who has led the Chargers to the AFC West title in his first year as a starter. -

THE REDS SPLIT THE DOUBLEHEADER DROPPING GAME ONE 5-2 AND WINNING GAME TWO 6-1. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Reds radio announcer Waite Hoyt died 30 years ago today Cincinnati Enquirer Waite Hoyt's happiest years were spent in Cincinnati. The popular Reds radio announcer from 1942-1965 was beloved by fans who cherished his play-by-play (always in the past tense) and his stories of being a teammate of Babe Ruth. Hoyt died 30 years ago today – Aug. 25, 1984 – just days shy of his 85th birthday. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, a relatively short distance from his late Yankees manager Miller Huggins. His widow Betty Hoyt told The Enquirer in 2012 Waite had a genuine appreciation for Reds fans and considered Cincinnati home. She said though Waite enjoyed more success elsewhere as a player, he was always happiest in Cincinnati. Waite and Betty lived in the Highland Towers in Mount Adams. They married on March 5, 1983. Betty, a 1943 Western Hills High School graduate, still lives in the West Side house she's had since 1964. She will turn 89 in September. Waite, who was the ace of the 1927 New York Yankees pitching staff, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. He won 237 games during his career. He identified most with the 1927 Murderers' Row team and believed it was the greatest squad ever put together. -
