    BELVEDERE AND CALDER VALE SPORTS CLUB THE QUEEN’S AWARD FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE Belvedere and Calder Vale Sports Club are to receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service after being nominated for the award by Pendle MP, Andrew Stephenson. Belvedere & Calder Vale Sports Club, situated at Holden Road, Reedley on the border of Burnley and Pendle, is a community based sports organisation. It was formed 63 years ago by the amalgamation of Calder Vale RUFC, (now Burnley RUFC); Burnley Belvedere Football Club and Burnley Belvedere Cricket Club. In 1957 a small committee of businessmen who were sportsmen involved in the three sports raised funds to buy a 6-acre plot of land to build a clubhouse with changing rooms and pitches to provide amateur sport for the local community. A further purchase of land to accommodate an additional football pitch and rugby pitch, with extensions to the original building, was made in later years to enable it to become the Club as we know it today. It provides facilities for the three sports across many age groups, genders and ethnic groups in the boroughs of Burnley and Pendle. It also supports the local community by making available its clubhouse facilities and sports grounds for a variety of uses. These include the meeting venue for Pendleside Rotary Club and Burnley Soroptomists Club, a Polling Station and the site for various local health initiatives. An Annual Christmas Carol Concert is held when funds are raised for Pendleside Hospice & Pendle Youth Orchestra. Its 12 acres of open space, with four sports pitches and a cricket square, are criss-crossed with public footpaths and a stretch of spring water-fed wetland which supports a wildlife environment.

The new name reflects the importance given to establishing the club as the premier Rugby Union provider in the area. Several players have achieved Lancashire and England honours. The club is affiliated to the Rugby Football Union, the Lancashire County RFU & the Manchester and District Referees’ Society. Various members have held senior positions in these organisations. The original Club was formed in 1926 and has shared a clubhouse, changing rooms and pitches with Burnley Belvedere Football Club and Burnley Belvedere Cricket Club since 1961. There are two rugby pitches (one is floodlit), two football pitches and one cricket field. The club also has the use of a local authority pitch across the road on the Prairie Playing Fields. All three sports operate under the name of Belvedere and Calder Vale Sports Club (B&CVSC).

  • Lancashire (Lonsdale)
    LANCASHIRE Lancashire is a large county in north-west of England, bordered by the sea to the west. The counties of Cumberland and Westmorland lie to the north, the West Riding of Yorkshire to the east, and Cheshire to the south. In the nineteenth century the county was transformed. It began as a mainly agricultural region but became an area with many large urban regions and a variety of industrial occupations. This transformation led to frequent changes in the administrative structure, both in the county-at-large and in the towns and cities. Because of the complex and changing structure, the information about weights and scales is presented here in six sections. The sections correspond geographically to the six ancient hundreds of the county, as shown in the map above. (The hundred of Lonsdale was divided naturally into two parts, North and South ‘of the Sands’, but it was administered as one unit.) It must be stressed that, although the administration of the county was based on these geographical areas, the individual hundreds did not have independent jurisdiction. 1 The hundred of LONSDALE in Lancashire Lonsdale is the most northerly of the six hundreds of Lancashire. At Morecambe Bay it is divided into two parts, often referred to as North and South ‘of the Sands’. In 1834 inspectors were appointed for the North and South divisions, based in Ulverston and Lancaster. The county police force took over responsibility in 1845. The growth of Barrow- in-Furness led to the establishment of a new Barrow division in 1875. In 1890 a police officer who had qualified as an inspector of weights and measures was appointed to cover both parts of the hundred.

    Professional Football and its Supporters in Lancashire, circa 1946-1985 Gavin Mellor Department of Historical and Critical Studies Thesis Presented at the University of Central Lancashire in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Award of Ph.D. January 2003 Abstract The academic study of Association Football and other sports is now regularly regarded as a valid and essential part of disciplines including psychology, history, philosophy, geography and sociology. The sociology and social history of Association Football in England for the period after the Second World War has, until recently, been dominated by the study of hooliganism and the recent commercialisation of the game. This has left a significant gap in the historiography of English foothall, particularly in terms of supporters' changing relationships with clubs in the period from 1946 onwards. This project has four principal aims. These are to assess the social make-up of post- war football crowds in Lancashire; to analyse the fall in attendances that occurred at • most Lancashire football clubs in the post-war period; to assess the developing relationship between football and social identity in post-war Lancashire; and to evaluate attempts to reconnect football clubs with football communities from the late l970s to the mid-1980s. The project is focused on Lancashire as this region provides an exceptionally good context for analysing post-war football supporters, containing both declining town-based clubs such as Preston North End and Blackpool, and big- city teams such as Liverpool and Manchester United. It centres on the period from circa 1946 to 1985 as most professional football clubs returned to normality after wartime dislocation in 1946, whilst the game underwent a number of fundamental changes after the Bradford City fire, Heysel Stadium disaster and other incidents that occurred in 1985.
