Friendly Fire: 1962’S Lawrence of Arabia
Note: This show periodically replaces their ad breaks with new promotional clips. Because of this, both the transcription for the clips and the timestamps after them may be inaccurate at the time of viewing this transcript. 00:00:00 Music Music “Overture” from Lawrence of Arabia. A stirring drumbeat plays at normal volume for a moment, then the music fades down and plays quietly as John Roderick speaks. 00:00:04 John Host Lawrence of Arabia is one of those movies you can do a bad job of Roderick watching. There’s so much happening in this film that you can actually fail at it, as a viewer. To succeed at watching this movie is to leave it more confused than you entered, to have your prejudices challenged and your assumptions upended, and to appreciate that not all of that was the film’s intention. The events depicted can’t be summarized or diagrammed, you can’t dissect them effectively using the blunt instrument of any particular ideology, there are no coherent narratives where the choices were clear or where history could’ve gone a different way, and maybe none of it happened like this anyway—but maybe it did. Coming out of this movie with a couple of pat conclusions and a prescription is equivalent to whacking at a turducken with a pocket comb and claiming to have rebuilt a living turkey, chicken, and duck. It’s a movie about a man in a time and place, the myth of the man, the making of the myth of the man in his own time, the myth of the making of the myth of the man in his immediate aftermath, and the math of making the myth of the man either stand or be damned after the dashed-off first draft of his plan to salve the wrath of the clans was panned by cads and damned by a new brand of grandstanding also-rans who want to reprimand and ban what they can’t understand. -

Nyc.Gov/Radio from the Radio New York Press Room MONDAY
MONDAY, MARCH 24, 2008 seattletimes.nwsource.com A much broader broadcast for KEXP By Florangela Davila Seattle Times staff reporter Long before the masses discovered catchy Afrobeat preppies Vampire Weekend, public radio station KEXP-FM played their music. So what if the band didn’t yet have a manager, a publicist, a label or an ounce of industry buzz? The DJs at KEXP liked what they heard, and they figured their listeners might too. And they were right. That’s just the latest example of how the Seattle radio station has helped vault bands (Modest Mouse, Death Cab For Cutie, Nirvana) from obscurity to fame. “No commercial station was playing our music,” said Ezra Koenig, Vampire Weekend’s lead singer. “On the first tour we did, by the time we got to Seattle, it was like everyone was familiar with the song (‘A-Punk’).” Now, KEXP’s own profile is about to rise. Starting today, KEXP’s shows will air on WNYE-FM in New York, exposing the Seattle station to as many as 14 million listeners. KEXP (90.3) will provide the New York public-radio station 39 hours of weekly programming, including simulcasts of its signature “Morning Show” with John Richards, who will split his time between coasts. The arrangement gives the Seattle station major-market visibility and affirms its muscle in the music industry. The partnership should also benefit local listeners, giving the station better access to the New York music scene. Still Seattle-centric The station’s management insists that KEXP, revered as quintessentially Seattle, won’t be any less focused on the local music scene. -

The Mormons in Nazi Germany
THE MORMONS IN NAZI GERMANY: HISTORY AND MEMORY A Dissertation by DAVID CONLEY NELSON Submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Approved by: Chair of Committee, Arnold P. Krammer Committee Members, Chester S. L. Dunning Walter D. Kamphoefner Peter J. Hugill D. Michael Quinn Head of Department David Vaught December 2012 Major Subject: History Copyright 2012 David Conley Nelson ABSTRACT This dissertation studies a small American religious group that survived unscathed during the Third Reich. Some fifteen thousand members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, lived under National Socialism. Unlike persecuted Jews and Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other small American-based sects that suffered severe restrictions, the Mormons worshiped freely under Hitler’s regime. They survived by stressing congruence between church doctrine and Nazi dogma. Mormons emphasized their interest in genealogical research and sports, sent their husbands into the Wehrmacht and their sons into the Hitler Youth, and prayed for a Nazi victory in wartime. Mormon leaders purged all Jewish references from hymnals, lesson plans and liturgical practices, and shunned their few Jewish converts. They resurrected a doctrinal edict that required deference to civil authority, which the Mormons had not always obeyed. Some Mormons imagined fanciful connections with Nazism, to the point that a few believed Hitler admired their church, copied its welfare program, and organized the Nazi party along Mormon lines. This dissertation builds upon Christine Elizabeth King’s theory of a common Weltanschauung between Mormons and Nazis, and Steven Carter’s description of the Mormons’ “accommodation” with National Socialism. -

Designed and built in-house by our staff of engineers, this robotic “Drum Machine,” called the Gluing Gantry, ensures that every Evans head has a true collar. A series of vacuum fixtures holds the film in place for each head while the robotic gluing arm circles above the hoop and dispenses epoxy. The result is a drumhead that tunes both easily and consistently. At Evans, we do it right the first time. And every time.
