City of Monterey Park News Release www.MontereyPark.ca.gov Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library Presents Film History Program with Foster Hirsch Monterey Park, Calif. – July 21, 2015 – The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library in partnership with the Monterey Park Historical Society will present a film screening and discussion of actor James Dean’s groundbreaking 1950s film drama that explored teen life and conflicts between generations on Sunday, July 26 at 1 p.m. in the Friends Room. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Sal Mineo, Best Supporting Actress for Natalie Wood and Best Writing of a Motion Picture story for Nicholas Ray. Professor Foster Hirsch, a Mark Keppel High School alumnus, will introduce the film classic with Dean starring as the rebellious Jim Stark. The film was the only time during Dean’s lifetime where he received top billing. The audience is invited to participate in discussion and questions and answers with Hirsch after the film screening. Hirsch is the author of sixteen books on theatre and movies. He received his B.A. from Stanford University and holds M.F.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. Hirsch currently teaches at Brooklyn College. A collection of his books are available at the library. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

Posted at www.williamwhitepapers.com Learning from other Movements: Gay Liberation and Recovery Advocacy Tom Hill and William White1 Introduction For participants of the current recovery advocacy movement, there is much to learn from previous social movements. Lessons of considerable import can be gleaned from the movements that intersected in the 1960s, including the civil rights movement, the black power movement, the new left and anti-war movements, the women’s movement, and the gay liberation movement. While all of these are worthy of study, the gay liberation movement holds certain parallels, strategies, and lessons that may be of particular interest. This is due in large part to the societal myths and misunderstandings of both people who have experienced addiction and those with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. The stigma attached to these groups has often rendered them expendable and, as a result, has forced them into hiding their experiences and identities. Members of the gay community, most prominently Bayard Rustin, played critical roles in the civil rights movement and later drew upon the lessons of the civil rights movement in the same way that members of the recovery advocacy movement are now drawing upon their experience within earlier social movements. Because the societal stigma and discrimination targeting these two groups have been so severe, they share similarities in the early stages of building a movement of social justice and change. There’s a few mentions in this document of the term “4K”, and before you dive in I‘d like to just take a moment to explain what it actually means. I don’t want to insult anyone on the one hand by mansplaining it (a crime of which, of course, I have never been accused) or on the other by just telling you to “Google It”, so hopefully what I’m about to say lands somewhere in between. “4K”, when used in connection with a digital cinema projector, refers to the number of pixels, horizontally, in the full frame image (more accurately, it would be called 4096 pixels!). Early digital cinema projectors were all 2K (2048 pixels!), as was the case for the ones we have just replaced. The 2K projector in Cinema One has been replaced by a 4K one, which places us at the vanguard of modern cinema exhibition, in terms of the resolution of the image that hits our screen, when the film is provided in that format. 4K will likely become the norm over time, but for now it’s still relatively rare. But... many recently restored classic films have been restored in 4K, and what I’m trying to tell you in an increasingly roundabout way is we’re planning to show off our new kit by showing a great number of them across July and August! (See page 24-26 for July’s selection, though I’ll throw in 2001: A Space Odyssey as a taster!) It’s very exciting, and highly unlikely you will ever have seen these amazing films look so darned good.
