Ange Boxall – Performer & Song Writer
Ange Boxall – Performer & Song Writer - Co-written and recorded with: • J.D. Souther (Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor) • Jim Lauderale (George Strait, Elvis Costello, Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill) • Shannon Wright & Adam Wright (Alan Jackson, Lee Ann Womack, John Legend) • Johnny Took (DMS’s) - Performed live with and/or supported live: • J.D. Souther • Jim Lauderdale • Bones Hillman (Midnight Oil) • Paul Kelly • Tim Freedman (The Whitlams) • Ron Sexsmith • Icehouse • Damien Leith Song writing is my therapy, my psychologist. Sometimes it takes a long time to finish a song. My longest took five years! Others come pouring out instantaneously, almost as though they were already written and you’re merely the transcriber. Songs can be like a lover. You can be obsessed with a newly penned song, wanting to play it all the time. In time you might realise that it’s not your finest work, maybe it’s even a crap song, ha! Maybe your friends sing along and it’s an instant a keeper. Others grow on you and become favourites over time. I write songs differently each time - sometimes a melody pops into my head. This often happens when I’m driving or doing menial tasks. Other times it’s a rhythm that comes. Sometimes it’s a poem and the writing first. Sometimes just a title. And sometimes it happens simultaneously. There isn’t one particular right or wrong way. It’s whatever works and feels right at the time. I started writing songs seriously when I was around 21. I’d been performing cover music around Hobart bars and clubs for a couple of years during Uni, earning money. -
Cotton and the Community: Exploring Changing Concepts of Identity and Community on Lancashire’S Cotton Frontier C.1890-1950
Cotton and the Community: Exploring Changing Concepts of Identity and Community on Lancashire’s Cotton Frontier c.1890-1950 By Jack Southern A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of a PhD, at the University of Central Lancashire April 2016 1 i University of Central Lancashire STUDENT DECLARATION FORM I declare that whilst being registered as a candidate of the research degree, I have not been a registered candidate or enrolled student for another aware of the University or other academic or professional institution. I declare that no material contained in this thesis has been used for any other submission for an academic award and is solely my own work. Signature of Candidate ________________________________________________ Type of Award: Doctor of Philosophy School: Education and Social Sciences ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores the evolution of identity and community within north east Lancashire during a period when the area gained regional and national prominence through its involvement in the cotton industry. It examines how the overarching shared culture of the area could evolve under altering economic conditions, and how expressions of identity fluctuated through the cotton industry’s peak and decline. In effect, it explores how local populations could shape and be shaped by the cotton industry. By focusing on a compact area with diverse settlements, this thesis contributes to the wider understanding of what it was to live in an area dominated by a single industry. The complex legacy that the cotton industry’s decline has had is explored through a range of settlement types, from large town to small village. -
James Taylor
JAMES TAYLOR Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi- platinum awards for a catalog running from 1970’s Sweet Baby James to his Grammy Award-winning efforts Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his accomplishments, James Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 saw his induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for James Taylor at Christmas. In 2008 Taylor garnered another Emmy nomination for One Man Band album. Raised in North Carolina, Taylor now lives in western Massachusetts. He has sold some 35 million albums throughout his career, which began back in 1968 when he was signed by Peter Asher to the Beatles’ Apple Records. The album James Taylor was his first and only solo effort for Apple, which came a year after his first working experience with Danny Kortchmar and the band Flying Machine. It was only a matter of time before Taylor would make his mark. Above all, there are the songs: “Fire and Rain,” “Country Road,” “Something in The Way She Moves,” ”Mexico,” “Shower The People,” “Your Smiling Face,” “Carolina In My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “You Can Close Your Eyes,” “Walking Man,” “Never Die Young,” “Shed A Little Light,” “Copperline” and many more. -

These new lugs hook onto bolts that at the shell’s nodal are attached to the shell, which allows the lug point. casings themselves to "float" eliminating any direct contact between the lug and the shell. As this design reduces the amount of hardware actually attached to the drum shell, the shell is allowed to vibrate freely. On an 11-inch shell the lug bolts, as well as the YESS mounting system, are all attached to the shell at its nodal point to greatly minimize influence on shell resonance to deliver maximum tone. Another benefit these lugs provide is when it comes time to change the head, it is no longer necessary to remove the tuning bolts from the lugs to remove the hoop. Just loosen the bolts enough to slide the lugs off of the bolts and the hoop comes right off. No more lost washers, etc. and head changes can be done quicker and easier than before. * Nodal point mounting is patented by the Nobel & Cooley Drum Company. Nylon Ring * Beside the Absolute Nouveau Lugs, the Absolute lugs that were offered on O Ring earlier models are also available. -

The English Occupational Song
UNIVERSITY OF UMEÅ DISSERTATION ISSN 0345-0155-ISBN 91-7174-649-8 From the Department of English, Faculty of Humanities, University of Umeå, Sweden. THE ENGLISH OCCUPATIONAL SONG AN ACADEMIC DISSERTATION which will, on the proper authority of the Chancellor's Office of Umeå University for passing the doctoral examination, be publicly defended in Hörsal E, Humanisthuset, on Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. Gerald Porter University of Umeå Umeå 1992 ABSTRACT THE ENGLISH OCCUPATIONAL SONG. Gerald Porter, FL, Department of English, University of Umeå, S 901 87, Sweden. This is the first full-length study in English of occupational songs. They occupy the space between rhythmic work songs and labour songs in that the occupation signifies. Occupation is a key territorial site. If the métier of the protagonist is mentioned in a ballad, it cannot be regarded as merely a piece of illustrative detail. On the contrary, it initiates a powerful series of connotations that control the narrative, while the song's specific features are drawn directly from the milieu of the performer. At the same time, occupational songs have to exist in a dialectical relationship with their milieu. On the one hand, they aspire to express the developing concerns of working people in a way that is simultaneously representational and metaphoric, and in this respect they display relative autonomy. On the other, they are subject to the mediation of the dominant or hegemonic culture for their dissemination. The discussion is song-based, concentrating on the occupation group rather than, as in several studies of recent years, the repertoire of a singer or the dynamics of a particular performance. -
There Is Hope! Practices and Interventions for Successful Treatment of Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse ©
There Is Hope! Practices and Interventions for Successful Treatment of Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse © Introduction [Edited: 11/30/2016] “Nonetheless, we are missing the boat!” At this time in our history, as a society, we are finally addressing sexual issues and sexual abuse issues more openly. This is an important progress. At home, we are hopefully doing a better job of teaching about sexuality than past generations did. We are teaching children in their pre-schools and in kindergartens about “Good Touch, Bad Touch”®. Societally, we more frequently are talking to our children about maintaining personal safety from “them”, about avoiding those ‘bad strangers’ who may be out there. “Even so, we are still missing the boat!” Surely, there have been victims whose sexual assault was perpetrated by a primarily unknown or a completely unknown stranger. A little boy who was pulled into a stranger’s car. A teenager who is raped by someone who was breaking-and-entering into her home. A college woman assaulted by a stalker. A young partier, slipped a date-rape drug at a party or in a bar, is sexually assaulted. Certainly, there are some dangerous strangers out there. As a result, we all do have to be aware of our surroundings and be reasonably vigilant in unfamiliar settings. And we do need to teach our kids about maintaining their personal safety from strangers. Nonetheless, while our society is warning children about ‘strangers’, we are still not providing them with adequate information about the dangers from molestation, rape, and incest by the ‘non-stranger’. -

"Millworker" by James Taylor
Millworker James Taylor Now my grandfather was a sailor, he blew in off the water My father was a farmer and I, his only daughter Took up with a no-good millworking man from Massachusetts Who dies from too much whiskey and leaves me these three faces to feed 5 Millwork ain't easy, millwork ain't hard Millwork it ain't nothing but an awful boring job I'm waiting for a daydream to take me through the morning And put me in my coffee break where I can have a sandwich and remember Then it's me and my machine for the rest of the morning 10 For the rest of the afternoon and the rest of my life Now my mind begins to wander to the days back on the farm I can see my father smiling at me, swinging on his arm I can hear my granddad's stories of the storms out on Lake Erie Where vessels and cargoes and fortunes and sailors' lives were lost 15 Yes, but it's my life has been wasted, and I have been the fool To let this manufacturer use my body for a tool I can ride home in the evening, staring at my hands Swearing by my sorrow that a young girl ought to stand a better chance Well may I work the mills just as long as I am able 20 And never meet the man whose name is on the label It be me and my machine for the rest of the morning And the rest of the afternoon gone, for the rest of my life Questions for Discussion and Writing 1. -
THE MARION MANUFACTURING MILL STRIKE of 1929 by Megan
A MISSING MOUNTAIN MEMORY: THE MARION MANUFACTURING MILL STRIKE OF 1929 by Megan Stevens A thesis submitted to the faculty of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Charlotte 2020 Approved by: ______________________________ Dr. David GoldfielD ______________________________ Dr. Shepherd McKinley ______________________________ Dr. Jurgen Buchenau ii ©2020 Megan Stevens ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iii ABSTRACT MEGAN STEVENS. A Missing Mountain Memory: The Marion Manufacturing Mill Strike of 1929 . (Under the direction of DR. DAVID GOLDFIELD) In Marion, North Carolina, the local residents of the city and surrounding region have forgotten a tragic strike that took place at one of the local mills in 1929, though it was possibly the deadliest textile mill strike in the South. The strike, which officially took place between July 11, 1929 and October 2, 1929, was in response to inhumane labor practices and unsatisfactory pay. While the strike was supporteD by the United Textile Workers, it was primarily organizeD by the local strikers who were unhappy with their working conditions. While the UTW was not affiliated with the Communist Party, and the strikers in Marion were decidedly anti-communist, past and present criticisms of the strike revolve around the inaccurate perception of the strikers being led by communists, which turned their neighbors against them. The strike ended on October 2, 1929, when a group of deputies fired into a strike-line, killing six men and injuring an untold number of others. Rather than reconcile and heal from this event one could call the residents of the town, including the mill workers, experts at forgetting. -
