He was a consultant to the Geological Survey of Ohio and associated with Stanley M. Totten in preparation of maps and reports on glacial geology. Among his publications on Ohio geology were bulletins and monographs on glacial and groundwater geology of Stark, Ashtabula, Portage, Trumbull, Holmes, Wayne, Cuyahoga and Summit Counties in the Allegheny Plateau. His earlier work was on bedrock geology, with emphasis on coal, clay and limestone deposits. After 1945 his work was mainly on glacial deposits, and especially on their relation to water supply and their environmental and engineering influences. In addition to economic and stratigraphic studies of glacial deposits, he was concerned with studies of history of geology. His special interest in this field was in the history and bibliography of early American geology, on which subject he wrote journal articles. He supervised about 30 Ph.D. dissertations, in geomorphology, glacial geology, and hydrogeology in Alaska, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Mexico, Nevada, Quebec, New Brunswick, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois. 15/11/23 4 Contents Boxes Biographical George W.
