Un ulteriore ringraziamento desidero esprimerlo alla mia famiglia, per essermi stata vicina in ogni momento. 6 INTRODUZIONE “Tánger llora a los que no la conocen y los que la conocen la lloran ” dice un proverbio tangerino.1 Artisti di tutto il mondo, che l’hanno conosciuta e ne sono rimasti sedotti, hanno contribuito a trasmetterne il mito fino a noi. Tangeri o Tanja , come viene chiamata in arabo, deriva il suo nome da quello della dea berbera Tanga , sposa di Anzar , dio della pioggia e dell’acqua. Il suo stesso nome, e la lunga storia, aggiungono alla bellezza della città l’eco della leggenda e della mitologia. Sospesa tra Africa e Europa, nella sua baia si incontrano un mare e un oceano. È spazzata dalle raffiche di charqui , il vento che soffia incessante dallo Stretto di Gibilterra. La città di Tangeri è da tempo immemorabile un crocevia di civiltà, un punto di intersezione per vari incontri e un luogo concupito da diversi popoli bramosi di estendere i propri confini, come fenici, romani, vandali, spagnoli, portoghesi, inglesi, francesi. Luogo d’esilio del mitico traditore, il conde don Julián, fu convertita all’Islam con le armi. La sua posizione geografica, in prossimità dell’Europa, ha largamente influito sulla sua affascinante storia, aprendola al mondo esterno e contribuendo al suo spirito liberale. È una città liminale per eccellenza, affacciata sui confini antichi del mondo, all’ombra delle colonne d’Ercole, che furono testimoni del «folle volo» dell’Ulisse di Dante.2 Quale terra d’esilio e città di frontiera vede, nel 1492, l’arrivo di numerose famiglie di ebrei e arabi, espulsi dalla penisola iberica, che si stabiliscono sulla 1 Raccolto dalla sottoscritta durante un soggiorno-studio nella città marocchina. 2 Il viaggio dell’Ulisse dantesco è rievocato nel XXVI Canto dell’Inferno, in cui l’eroe appare sapientiae cupido e animato da innatus cognitionis amor . È colui che incalza i suoi compagni a «seguir virtute e canoscenza». E, per amore della conoscenza, si spinge oltre i limiti ritenuti invalicabili, volgendo «la poppa nel mattino». Ulisse, partendo per quello che sarà il suo ultimo viaggio, ne inverte la consueta direzione e, puntando la prua ad Occidente, «di retro al sol», procede verso il tramonto, fino al naufragio e «al folle volo». Con la caduta di Granada i Re Cattolici mettono fine all’esistenza degli ebrei e degli arabi, in quella terra dove erano convissute le tre religioni, spostando, idealmente, Al-Andalus sulla costa africana.3 A Tangeri hanno convissuto le tre culture, l’araba, l’ebraica e la cristiana. La sua posizione geografica ha largamente influito sulla sua affascinante storia, aprendola al mondo esterno, e contribuendo al suo spirito liberale. Nel 1912 i francesi istituiscono un Protettorato in Marocco, cedendo il nord e il sud del Sahara agli spagnoli. Nel 1923 Tangeri diviene una zona internazionale, politicamente neutrale e con un’economia aperta. Il nuovo statuto formalizza il controllo internazionale sulla città, che si trasforma in ville de plaisir , di intrighi e di traffici, per lo più illeciti, di spionaggio e di esilio politico. È il rifugio per gli spagnoli dopo la Guerra, definita da Giuseppe Grilli, dei Tre Anni,4 conclusasi con la vittoria di Franco e l’instaurazione del regime dittatoriale. È anche enclave libera per gli ebrei perseguitati dai nazisti. Si converte, poi, in asilo per i nazisti stessi, alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Ma i suoi paradossi non si esauriscono qui. Dal 1940 fino alla fine della guerra, viene occupata dalle truppe di Franco in seguito ad un accordo diplomatico, in base al quale, la neutralità della Spagna doveva garantire un certo ordine tra le distinte comunità europee che vi risiedevano. La sua fama raggiunge l’apogeo quando, alla fine della guerra, viene ripristinato lo statuto originario di territorio libero, con modifiche minime. Gli Stati Uniti e la Russia si integrano nello statuto, riducendo considerevolmente il potere della Spagna sulla città. Verso la fine degli anni ‘40 fino all’inizio degli anni ‘60, vi risiedono personaggi delle più svariate risme, tra cui Paul e Jane Bowles, gli artisti della Beat Generation , i loro amici e associati e molti scrittori e artisti che nacquero e si formarono nella stessa città marocchina, come ad esempio Ángel Vázquez 3 Cfr. As popular as it is controversial, Mad Genius rhetoric imagines an age-old link betWeen “madness,” or apparently problematic mental states, and extraordinary gifts of creativity, intelligence, and other talents. I ask: How is Mad Genius rhetoric taken up by real mentally ill people, especially women, in self- referential texts? What conditions encourage authors to construct Mad Genius personae in life Writing, and what rhetorical purpose do such personae serve? Examining these questions through a lens of mental health rhetoric, I build case studies grounded in four highly influential mental illness memoirs: Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted, Kay Redfield Jamison’s An Unquiet Mind, Nana-Ama Danquah’s Willow Weep for Me, and Elizabeth Wurtzel’s Prozac Nation. John Mensah Sarbah, Fanti National Constitution. London, 1906, 71. This document is a response to a need perceived while teaching in the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana, during 1994. In addition to primary material and articles on the theatre in Ghana, it lists reviews of Ghanaian play-texts and itemizes documents relating to the Ghanaian theatre held in my own collection. I have also included references to material on the evolution of the literary culture in Ghana, and to anthropological studies. The whole reflects an awareness of some of the different ways in which ‘theatre’ has been defined over the decades, and of the energies that have been expended in creating archives and check-lists dedicated to the sister of arts of music and dance. It works, with an ‘inclusive’ bent, on an area that focuses on theatre, drama and performance studies. When I began the task I found existing bibliographical work, for example that of Margaret D. Patten in relation to Ghanaian Imaginative Writing in English, immensely useful, but it only covered part of the area of interest.

(Though, admittedly, if you want to know anything about the aforementioned film festival beyond simply its dates, you’ll need to go to www.edfilmfest.org.uk on or after 10am on the 23 May!) Yes, it’s our annual Bumper [early] Summer Double Issue, packed with more films than I care to mention (again). There’s a lot in it for sure. It’s a bit daunting, I know. Take it slow. Take an hour. Savour it, one page of great films at a time. There’s so much in it, I had to apologise to the staff for giving them so much work to do. But, don’t tell them, I couldn’t really care less… your cinematic pleasure comes first! (It’s OK, they think that too.) But, it’s like the fella said, quantity is never a substitute for quality – that’s why we’ve got that covered too. You will, of course, want to find that out for yourself… We’re entering the second half of our significant Bergman retro (that is, Ingmar), and I’m very hopeful we can continue attracting such healthy audiences (though one or two of you did look a little peaky, if I’m honest) as the season progresses. So far audience numbers have been very encouraging indeed.
