The Faroe Islands are in positive mood as they welcome Northern Ireland, who will be eager for three UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying points, with their main Group F rivals Hungary and Romania meeting elsewhere. Previous meetings • Gareth McAuley and scored, and saved a Fródi Benjaminsen penalty, as Northern Ireland beat the Faroe Islands 2-0 in their first Group F meeting in October 2014. • The Faroes' record in five games against Northern Ireland is W0 D2 L3 (W0 D1 L1 at home – W0 D1 L2 in Belfast). However, that 5-0 'home' defeat was played in Landskrona, Sweden, with their only actual encounter in the Faroe Islands a 1-1 draw in Toftir, Kyle Lafferty (76) replying to a strike from Christian Holst (60). Disciplinary • Atli Gregersen is absent through suspension. Fródi Benjaminsen and Brandur Olsen are both a booking away from a one-game ban. • Northern Ireland midfielder Chris Brunt and forward Kyle Lafferty are a yellow card away from a suspension. Form guide • The Faroe Islands completed a Group F double with a 2-1 home success over Greece in their last qualifier in June. Their 1-0 win in Greece earlier in the campaign marked their only clean sheet in their last 19 competitive matches. • The Faroes' best-ever defensive performance over the course of a campaign was in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2000, where they conceded 17 times in ten fixtures – an average of 1.7 per game. At the moment, they are conceding at a rate of 1.33 a match. • Northern Ireland have won two of their three Group F away fixtures to date – two more than they managed in FIFA World Cup qualification. • Northern Ireland have not won as many away games in a qualifying campaign since conjuring three victories in qualifying for EURO '96. Trivia and links • The Faroe Islands Football Association (FSF) said tickets for the Northern Ireland match sold out in an unprecedented 16 hours in the wake of the national team's 2-1 home triumph over Greece in June. • Northern Ireland goalkeeping coach Maik Taylor – who was listed as an emergency reserve goalkeeper earlier in the qualifying programme – turns 44 the day of the Faroe Islands trip. • In UEFA age-group competitions, Northern Ireland's record in five games against the Faroe Islands is W4 D1 L0 – with no goals shipped. The countries' Under-19 sides meet for the first time on 14 October 2015. • The four encounters between the nations' clubs in UEFA competitions have left the Northern Irish representatives with the record W2 D2 L0 – and again, no goals conceded. Linfield were taken to penalties by B36 Tórshavn in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, but the Belfast outfit prevailed 4-3, and then overcame ÍF Fuglafjørdur 5-0 on aggregate in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League first qualifying round.

5 Faroe Islands - Northern Ireland Friday 4 September 2015 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Tórsvøllur, Torshavn Head coach Lars Olsen Date of birth: 2 February 1961 Nationality: Danish Playing career: Glostrup IF, Køge BK, Brøndby IF (twice), Trabzonspor AŞ, RFC Seraing, FC Basel 1893 Coaching career: Randers FC, Odense BK, Faroe Islands • Enjoyed an illustrious playing career as a central defender, winning five Danish titles in a six-year spell at Brøndby between 1985 and 1991. • Allegedly drove from Turkey to Scandinavia when he learned of his country's belated call-up to EURO '92. His passion and leadership – he played every minute in Sweden – helped inspire Denmark to the most unlikely of triumphs. He ended his career with 84 caps, a record 69 as captain. • Learned his coaching craft with Brøndby, taking charge at various youth and reserve levels after finishing his playing days at the club in 1996, before accepting his first senior job with newly formed Randers in 2003. Guided the team into the Danish Super League in 2004 but could not help maintain their elite status, suffering immediate relegation. • Steered second-division Randers to a surprise 2006 Danish Cup success, beating Esbjerg fB in the final, while also securing a return to the top flight. Moved to Odense in summer 2007, leading his new side to a fourth-place finish in his first term. Consecutive runners-up spots followed in 2008/09 and 2009/10 before he departed in September 2010. • Appointed coach of the Faroe Islands in November 2011, his team were unable to register a win as they came bottom of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group C, earning their only point in a 1-1 home draw with Kazakhstan. Michael O'Neill Date of birth: 5 July 1969 Nationality: Northern Irish Playing career: Coleraine FC, Newcastle United FC, Dundee United FC, Hibernian FC, Coventry City FC, Aberdeen FC (loan), Reading FC (loan), Wigan Athletic FC, Saint Johnstone FC, Portland Timbers, Clydebank FC, Glentoran FC, Ayr United FC Coaching career: Brechin City FC, Shamrock Rovers FC, Northern Ireland • A midfielder and forward during a 20-year playing career, O'Neill spent the bulk of his time in Scotland, most notably with Dundee United and Hibernian. Enjoyed late success when winning a Northern Irish league and League Cup double with Glentoran in 2002/03. • Made 31 appearances for his country, scoring four goals, two of which came in a memorable 5-3 victory against Austria during EURO '96 qualifying. • Moved into coaching as assistant manager of Scottish club Cowdenbeath in 2005 before taking the reins at Brechin in March 2006. Was named coach of Shamrock Rovers in the Republic of Ireland in December 2008, guiding the Hoops to a second-place finish in his debut season before clinching their first title since 1994 in 2010. • Made history as Rovers became the first Irish side to qualify for the group stage of a European competition, beating FK Partizan in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League play-offs. Also led the Hoops to a second successive domestic championship in 2011. • Appointed coach of his country in December 2011 and helped Northern Ireland record several notable results in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying, including a 1-1 draw in Portugal and a home win against Russia.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
