Notes from the Valley A Spiritual Travelogue through Cancer JANUARY 2015 ndy McQuitty officially entered the Valley of the Shadow of Death at 2:58 PM on July 14, 2009, with these post-colonoscopy words from his doctor. “Andy, you have a massive tumor that has broken through the wall of your colon. It’s cancer. It’s serious. Get in here now.” More than a warning of mortal danger, for Andy and the roughly 1,665,540 new cancer patients diagnosed in America this year, that pronouncement was an emotional and spiritual change of address to the land that David calls the “valley of the shadow of death”in the twenty-third psalm. Yet the serendipity Andy discovered in that Valley mirrors that of King David, whose experience of God’s presence was magnified, not diminished, by the shadow of death. And so, in the persona of a travel writer sending notes back from the desert valley of the shadow of death, this stage-four cancer survivor writes to those who want gut level answers to questions like: “Why did God let me get cancer?”and “Can any good thing come of all this wretched waiting and uncertainty?” Notes from the Valley was written for anyone on the cancer journey who is craving words of God’s wisdom for their journey that are simultaneously pastoral, evangelistic, theological, and, most of all, authentic. Table of Contents: Foreword by Matt Chandler Introduction: Travel tips for the valley Chapter One: Story Chapter Two: Immanuel Chapter Three: Believe Chapter Four: stars, stars, stars Chapter Five: Crossing Over Format: 5.5 x 8.5 Chapter Six: Hope Format: eBook Paperback Pages: 192 eISBN: 978-0-8024-9208-1 Chapter Seven: Value ISBN-13: 978-0-8024-1254-6 Price: $ 14.99 eBook Price: $11.24 Chapter Eight: Love ISBN-10: 0-8024-1254-8 Chapter Nine: Wait Chapter Ten: Live Christian Living / Practical Life / Suffering Epilogue Audience: Primary: Christ-followers (and their families and friends) who find themselves fighting a possibly fatal disease and possibly fatal questions for their faith. Secondary: Those who are not Christian but are interested in the wisdom and ways of God especially with regard to life, suffering and death. Marketing: l Connect with cancer care centers (Cancer Treatment Centers of America and others) l Connect with hospital chaplains across America l Connect with cancer support groups within large churches l Eblast through CT (Cancer Care Centers frequently market to this audience) l Develop videos with the author to be used alongside the book DR. MCQUITTY spent his high school years in Paris, Texas where his father served as Senior Minister of a Presbyterian church. Andy is husband to Alice and father to Julie, Elizabeth, Bonnie, Jonathan and Jeffrey. And most recently, grandpa to Drew and Madeline.Andy is an avid reader, tennis court rat, golfer, and writer; but his favorite pastime is spent with his family. He is a graduate of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois and of Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas. Andy earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1997, receiving the C. Sumner Wemp Award in personal evangelism as well as the John G. Mitchell Award for outstanding scholarship and effectiveness in ministry. Andy has served as a youth pastor in Washington State, and as Associate Pastor of a Bible Church in Garland, Texas. He has faithfully served as Sr. Pastor to Irving Bible Church since 1987. 1 2 Timothy 9 2 Timothy 4:9-22 August 25, 2013 The Rev. Dr. Robert S. Rayburn Tonight we conclude this series of sermons on Paul’s letters to his younger colleague Timothy; there were twenty-three in all. Next Lord’s Day evening we begin with one of the few remaining books of the Bible that I have never preached through: the Prophesy of Zechariah. I’m already greatly enjoying and profiting from the study of that book and I’m confident you will as well. As we said last time, vv. 9-22 are something of a postscript to this second letter to Timothy, the last of his New Testament letters. The argument of the letter was concluded in the previous few verses and what remains amounts to personal remarks. Those remarks, however, are illuminating and important and interesting in a variety of ways. This too is the Word of God and profitable for us; it likewise roots our faith in real history and the life of human beings, such life as we have experienced it ourselves. So let’s consider these final verses and what they have to tell us about Paul’s life and our own. Text Comment v.9 The great apostle to the Gentiles, titan that he was, remained a human being, with hopes and longings such as fill the heart of any human being: for companionship, for encouragement, and so on. v.10 Titus had by this time concluded his assignment in Crete, where he was when Paul wrote the letter to him that bears his name, and was now at work establishing the church on the eastern coast of the Adriatic sea opposite the eastern coast of Italy.

Actions of the 41st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America L. Roy Taylor, Stated Clerk PCA 41st General Assembly in Greenville, South Carolina The 41st General Assembly of the PCA met in Greenville, South Carolina, June 17-20, 2013 hosted by Calvary Presbytery. There were 319 Ruling Elders and 1,008 Teaching Elders from 705 churches as registered commissioners. The General Assembly “constitutes the bond of union, peace and correspondence among all its congregations and courts” (Book of Church Order 14-1). It is primarily a meeting to conduct and review the work of the denomination. The Assembly, however, is more than just a business meeting. It is an annual church family reunion, an occasion for corporate worship, an opportunity for fellowship, networking, information and training through seminars, renewal of friendships, and learning about ministry resources from exhibitors. Preachers for the three worship services were Dr. Michael Ross, retiring Moderator; Rev. Brian Habig, pastor of Downtown Presbyterian Church, Greenville; and Dr. David Sinclair, pastor of Clemson Presbyterian Church. Major seminars offered this year were: “Commending and Defending the Total Truthfulness of Scripture,” led by Dr. Ligon Duncan, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, MS, and Dr. Al Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; and “Working Together in the PCA to Address Our Cultural Moment,” led by Dr. Ligon Duncan and Dr. Tim Keller, Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church of New York. The Significance of Westminster Theological Seminary Today D. Clair Davis Forty years for me at Westminster Theological Seminary, two as student and 38 as professor: that generates memories. How reliable are they? Paul Woolley reviewed Wilbur Smith’s Before I Forget and found Smith’s memories so different from his own that he had to conclude: before he forgot? But he already had! Have I? And are my memories the important ones? I’ve told my students that when the roll is called up yonder they’ll learn who the really important people in the history of the church are, and it’s not going to be the ones they learned about in class. What did happen when that remarkable church planter came to WTS and not to Princeton because he heard me speak in chapel on the glory of Christ? What in the world did I say? What about the hundreds of times when suddenly the light went on in class? What was happening? That went on in all the other classes, at least as much as in mine; I wish I could give you every one of those hidden stories. I dedicate this with enthusiasm to Grace Mullen, WTS archivist and keeper and lover of the heritage. I wanted to know what Machen really knew about liberalism among Presbyterian missionaries in China. She found for me the correspondence with Arie Kok, a Dutch diplomat in China at the time. She also found the correspondence of Machen with Robert E. Speer and with Clarence Macartney. There were many more.
